Yeah even though I can't justify my bringing my dual-monitor system to school, I just have to have a Linux box. So I think headless with the powerbook will do. It did make me sad when I had to move a monitor off my desk (at home) to sit my powerbook somewhere. My beloved Linux box is being replaced *cry*

Try T^N. One disk is T, two is T^2, three is (*gasp*) T^3. I'm not going to prove this for you, but it is right. (Now somebody will reply and claim I'm wrong, and I'll have to post a proof.)

Hyperthreading was a good way for intel to get itself out of a jam. The p4 had a REALLY long pipeline, and in order to keep it filled most of the time, they needed two threads feeding it with instructions.

Basically there are multiple units (say integer units) that can run concurrently. If you can get two integer operations to compute at the same time, then you just increased performance. Hyperthreading was a way for the OS to help the CPU keep it's execution units full.

And yeah, "low-end" Opterons are cheap these days. I have my eye on a dual-opteron setup...

I program stack computers. And I almost always write out the program on paper first. Actually I use a four-step procedure. First I write out the state of the stack after every instruction. For example, say I want to calculate 4A + B^2 ... here's what I write

    X B X X X X
    B A B 4A 4A X
    A 4 4A B B^2 4A+B^2
    (time--->)

Then I figure out what instruction I used to get there:

(start), 4, MUL, SWAP, SQR, ADD

Then I try it out on my own data, by hand. (Let's use 1 for A and 4 for B, the result should be 20)

    X 4 X X X
    4 1 4 4 X
    1 4 4 16 20

    Okay, it worked.

THEN I type it into the computer, and run some more test cases. So you see, what you learned in school may actually be useful!

I agree with you. I'm happy that I chose not to go to a place like MIT for two reasons:

The first is obviously cost. For no money on my part (admittedly my parents paid into some plan called College Illinois that will cover your tuition for 4 years at any in-state public university, but I do have scholarships for things like textbooks). And it's the same damn education. The MIT people don't know some secret about Taylor series that the UIC people don't. The first three years of undergraduate are most definitely the same everywhere (well, at any decent research university anyway). Maybe the fourth year the MIT people will have something new and interesting for you to work on that the UIC people don't (although there's plenty here too), but maybe not. For undergraduate work, the extra $200000 a year isn't worth it :)

And secondly, at MIT you probably don't mean jack shit to anyone. Everyone there is really bright; why should Professor Pringles help you with your research? If you're pretty smart, you'll stand out more at a place like UIC (not to say that I'm particularly smart or that there aren't a lot of smart people at UIC), and get a chance to excel.

So in the end, you get at the very least the same education at UIC that you would at MIT, and perhaps get even more. For a LOT less money.

Oh, and hell UIUC is one of the best engineering schools in the country, so if you're in state it's a REALLY good idea to look into it! (Unless you don't like living in the middle of a cornfield, like me...)
