    The latest beta versions of cdex has "Paranoia" modes, which would seem to indicate something similar to cdparanoia. Not sure if it's the same, but it works pretty well, and the program is free too.

    Windows 9x does not use HLT on idle, therefore a CPU runs just as hot doing nothing as working 100% under Windows 98.

    Was this a class 2 or class 3 laser? One burns your eye very quickly, the other takes forever. If they did that with a Class 2 laser, I wouldn't be at all surprised because Class 3 lasers are much stronger.

    All the cards are based on NVidia's reference design (with very few exceptions.. very very few) and so all the cards are basically the same.

    They only vary with the heatsink/fan used and the quality of the RAM (some kinds of RAM can overclock higher than others so that's something to keep a look out for). All the cards run at the same default MHz for memory and core speed, and the RAMDACs are identical because they're built into NVidia's chip.

    In the end, buy the cheapest one you can find because they're all the same.

    So anonymity should be available to everyone else, just not those filthy spammers?

    If you're spamming, then you're trying to sell something. If you're trying to sell something, then you should give some way of contacting the spammers. It doesn't make sense to not give any contact information when you're trying to sell something.

    I think you're confusing the encryption of high-precision signals with the added noise in the civilian signals. They're two different things.

    The military's highly accurate signals are still encrypted, but the consumer-level signals aren't being intentionally degraded anymore (but they're still less accurate).

    MP3s are measured in kilobits. Converting 128kbps to bytes gives 16K/s. Your DSL is also measured in kilobits (unless you're saying that you get 6mbps DSL for $140/month), so you can only support 5 or 6 people (768/128=6), and then they'll all start losing packets.

    Yes, I've actually done this. It's the only time I've actually gotten a 33600 connection... I used a USRobotics Sportster and a Diamond somethingorother, which I later killed with a bad firmware update.

    I guess it depends on the modems you use.

    If you can change the init string that the device sends to the modem, you can tell it to ignore the dialtone. Then just have it dial some fake number (so it thinks it's dialed something) and then tell your server to answer (have to issue an ATA since there will be no ring). Then they'll connect. But you won't get a 56k connection, only 33.6.

    If you compare the Windows client with something like gnapster, the Windows client is total crap. Gnapster is far better and easier to use, and it's so tasty too.

    Also, Napster doesn't offer one huge database of music.. they provide lots of smaller ones, and you can't pick which one to connect to without a different program. The servers are not connected together.

    It seems to me that places that charge fees for NTSC-PAL conversion and other things actually do the work on your copy. Comparing it to mymp3 is like saying that they have a big stack of preconverted movies and you just come in and buy one, showing them your copy as proof.

    I've always wondered just what Intel's new CPUs are doing when they get 1-2 watts. Maybe they're idle. The Crusoe uses that much when it's actively processing things and goes insanely low when it's idle, so I'm more interested in what Intel's CPUs do when they're doing the same.

    No real gamer (the kind who will run to buy a GeForce2 card and overclock it) will use Linux just for the games. Compared to Windows, Linux has few impressive games, while Windows gets all of them.

    Bottom line is, mp3s shouldn't play properly, or you should be able to check for the existence of a footer to tell if your mp3 is cut off.

    But that removes the fun of playing mp3s while they're still downloading, which works great if you have a high bandwidth connection. Just gotta make sure the transfer goes faster than the bitrate.

    My understanding of this is that they'll only clog up the heavens for a short time, as once a satellite stops correcting its orbit it'll eventually burn up by itself.

    This is 128kbps per channel, not altogether, which means that it really goes up to 256kbps.

    According to the pike web site, it is a high-level interpreted language, syntax similar to C, and has an "image processing module" capable of producing anti-aliased text and can do other drawing operations (image scaling, etc). It has a crypto toolkit and can interface with SQL databases. It's even GPL'd and works on quite a few different platforms. Looks like it's from Sweden.

    Sounds pretty cool to me.

    I don't think that's quite right. I watched the Nortwest Cable News report on the new lovebug variant, and not once did they mention Microsoft or Outlook, just "destroy your entire system". Nobody's blaming Microsoft for anything, they're just blaming "those darn hackers" for causing the problems.

    I used dialpad.com calling my friend over my cablemodem, and the quality was excellent. No cracking, dropping out or anything, and we both talked simultaneously for awhile and nothing unusual happened. Dialpad only sucks for slow modems.
