Hey, yes you're right, but the point I'm making (or should have been making) is that you can't generalize from IDE to parallel in general because IDE has special issues. The example of the 80 wires is not an example of the issues parallel gets from going to high speed, it's an example of how crappily PCs are designed.

  2. Re:Speed on PCI Express - Coming Soon to a PC Near You · · Score: 2, Interesting

Yeah, well the ATA cables with 80 pins are not needed because the clock speed is so high, they're needed becasue IDE is not properly terminated, so your source is shot down.

parallel analogy: You can't fit a C130 cargo aircraft in the back seat of a car, so having a C130 doesn't get you anywhere.

criticism: you CAN fit your car in the cargo space of a C130, so it DOES get you somewhere.

ATM is a great protocol and technology. It missed it's ideal adoption time, but you can expect to see it re-incarnated in later tech. You can send IP over ATM, voice over ATM, ethernet over ATM, et cetera. ATM is the best "bearer channel" solution we have today. You don't need end to end ATM to get a benefit from it, because it's great at interfacing to other kinds of protocols, which is why sprint (a big company) has decided to build their core network out of ATM, and you (an individual slashdot poster) probably don't understand it enough to criticize that decision.

My friend, I come from a 3rd world country and I am probably 10 years older than you. I responded to you because out of the blue, for no reason you included a stupid, ignorant political statement where it had no reason for being.

The problem of starvation is not a problem of farming, it's a problem of economics. Lots of countries have crappy farmland, but aren't starving, take any mid-east oil producer as an example. The 3rd world economy isn't ruined by too many people; it's ruined by civil wars, and unstable government.

It must be nice to think you're mature and superior because you don't care about the value of human lives lost thousands of miles away, and like to point it out for no reason whatsoever.

BTW Darwinism doesn't apply in this case (since the people born in bad conditions are disadvantaged, not inferior), and you make yourself look like a jerk by bringing it up.

  5. people starving in somalia on Run Your Car on Grease · · Score: 1

People in war ravaged countries aren't starving because they continue to have children in spite of their present conditions, they're starving because the children ALREADY EXISTED before the latest war/famine started. It is the biggest bunch of BS when people say that the problem comes from having too many kids.

If _you_ have a time machine and see that your job is going to be destroyed in a civil war in 7 years you can choose not to have a child, but people without the time machine can't retroactivly not have kids once the unforseen political/economic disaster happens.

To summarize: you are being an asshole, and don't understand what you're talking about.

The low number of genes discovered raises intriguing issues. One is that there is no genetic basis for race. All humans share 99.99 per cent of their genetic information and there is more variation within racial groups than between them.

Actually that's not what I take it to say. It says that because we're so much alike, and there is so little variation between races the concept of race is not genetically backed up.

The choice of racial classifications is a cultural construct, not the underlying physical features. For instance, many italians are not considered white in australia.

When people say race has no biological basis what they mean is not that blue eyed parents won't have blue eyed children, what they mean is that the choice of what physical characteristics constitutes a race has no biological basis.

As proof: I am considered a member of 6 different races acording to 6 different cultures. The fact that y'all racially pure people can't agree on what race I am proves that the choice of features that delineate races is completely arbitrary, and hence race has no biological basis. QED.
