  1. It's rather about a pop-up window now on Debian, XPDF and Copyrights · · Score: 1
I've followed the discussion on debian-devel which started with this posting. I don't really like Adam Langley's ideas about copyrights being obsolete, but he's not the maintainer and Hamish Moffatt promised to do as the majority suggests (I bet he'll have a lot of more input now).

So far the most popular solution suggested was a pop-up window stating the originals authors wishes and a Question whether to continue or not. I think this is a fair solution, as it allows for "fair use"([tm] by USA) and alerts the user that he shouldn't really do as he pleases about the document.

For text-mode, this could be implemented accordingly, I guess.

actually it's not _that_ hard to get in the engine room. Just typing "aft" 5 times suffices. Only then the game pretends that there would be nothing in it. After two more "look" it tells you about the spare improbability drive.

I won't come up with a transscript, though, I just died and it takes about a hundred steps to get to this damned door (the door next to it is even harder, btw)

Oh, and you can play HHGG as a Java Game on Douglas Adams website

From reading it it sounds as if Debian is an example of a project being successfully maintained "by a committee" and not under the ultimate control of one guy

Well, I read Debian-Devel and you wouldn't know that Wichert is the big boss only from reading that. In fact, nobody really seems to decide anything, it's basically discussed until a conclusion is found, and it's not like Wichert saying 'No, that won't work, EOT'

    - They couldn't get the name of the chip right. It is "Pentium 4", not "Pentium IV". If they couldn't get this detail right, why should I trust them on power and performance measurements?

well, actually, the name appears to be "Pentium 4" all over the article. It was the original submitter who made this "unforgivable" error.

    - It is from Germany.

    good reasoning.

As we know, AMD has very strong ties to the German government.

where do "we" know this from?

AMD received a very low interest loan from the German government to build a fab in Dresden,

this is called "Aufbau Ost"(Building up former East-Germany). Thankfully, America helped to build up West-Germany some decades ago, remember? Motorola do have fabs in Dresden as well, btw.

and there has been various other trickery going on. Remember when the German government tried to ban the Pentium III?

huh? nobody was very happy about the serial number, IIRC. And I can't remember any real plans to ban the thing at all(apart from investigations)

I wouldn't believe anything coming out of Germany which has something positive to say about AMD.

AFAIR, Andreas Stiller from the german C't Magazine was the only non-english journalist to be featured several times on Slashdot in the past months. And he talks about AMD as well.

    Make up your mind.

Disclaimer: I am german, but am neighter too glad about the current government, nor related to AMD or C't in any way.
