The redirects are defined in a client-side file called msdnodc.xml with a clearly defined and well-documented DTD and plenty of documentation on the MSDN website.

Ahh...but you see...we're still in the XP *beta*. Before that sucker goes live, MS will *probably* encode it into an encrypted (aka: DMCA-protected) DLL file that you can't remove, because they threw a couple of "vital" IE functions in there as well

They already have. Here is a snipit from the Office XP Solution Development Resource CD:

Simple smart tag solutions can be created using a text editor such as Notepad and distributed as XML files. More advanced smart tag solutions rely on the Smart Tags 1.0 type library in Office XP, with these solutions being distributed as dynamic-link libraries (DLLs).

How much you wana bet that they will be encrypted on final release?

There is something that I think alot of people are forgetting: The definition of .com: commercial

If this site is not trying to sell anything as a legitimate business, then what is it doing owning a .COMMERCIAL domain name?

This is the main reason that we are running out of .com names: people are taking them for non-commercial reasons. People, that's what .NET and .ORG are for!!

no time off to vote? The law requires that employers give employees time off to vote. A notice stating that should be posted along with the normal notices on minimum wage and workplace conditions, etc.

On making it a speedier process: Ever notice that most of the elecion volunteers are extremely elderly? At least where I voted (Oakland, CA), the people manning the lines were among the oldest people I had ever seen. Maybe what we need is incentive for younger people to volunteer so that the lines could move a little faster. What does everyone think?

    An even more cynical synopsis:

Why the delay - by the time they open (2002) federal anti-privacy laws will make the department illegal and it will be forced to close.

Meanwhile, undisclosed parties will be able to make out with the large sums of taxpayer dollars spent in creating this department in the first place (you seriously don't think that they will give the money back do you?)

Remember the philosophy of Andy Grove (CEO of Intel):

"Get them young, burn them out, let them go".

The man won an award for publishing this in a book and now high-tech business is following his ideas. The H1B Visas are perfect for this because after they burn the young people out, they don't have to see them again. Companies realised that doing this to american workers was like sh*ting where you eat, so they want to do it to foreign workers. It makes perfect sense. Especially since the difficulty in getting a job increases with age. Many 30-40 year old people with tons of experience are being shafted in the job search.

BTW, I have also worked with Indian, Russian, and other foreign workers and found them determined and knowledgeable.

You have a point. So, let's take the government out of the picture entirely and let M$ fight it out on its own.

All of this "we have to level the playing field" bullsh*t is being espoused by the government because it is the government themselves that created the disparity in the first place. They just do not want to admit it.

Patents, copyrights, etc. were created for the explicit purpose of creating a monopoly for a particular idea/product. Only the holder of the copyright can make and sell the product. This was originally done in England so that certain publishing companies can get exclusive rights to publish books. There was actually only 1 publishing house that could print the Bible!!

Bottom line: The government should stay out of economics unless it deals with fraud.

They are even cheaper than you think. On their website, it says this:

Compensation of $10,000 will be divided among the persons who submit a successful unique attack on any individual technology during the duration of the SDMI Public Challenge.

This means that if, during that time (Sept 15 to Oct. 7), 10 people crack it, they each get $1,000. If 1,000 people crack it (I believe that there are that many good peole at least), they each get a measly $10. And they still have to sign their lives away with an NDI or similar document.
