While I know slashdotters all like to bash on MBA types, you gotta think about it from their standpoint. A good invention is just that, a good invention, nothing more. It doesn't make any money until you get people involved who have the business know how to take this neat invention and say "Cool, now how do I make money with that." Without that insight, it's just a scientific discovery...Unfortunately there's no money in a scientific discovery by itself.
All companies have to pay out dividends eventually, otherwise the price of the share would be zero (since the price of the share is basically the net present value of the the stream of expected dividends).
True, the dividend discount model has been used for years, but now the stocks are evaluated more on growth potential and capital gains...
I believe you're thinking of stock buy backs, not stock splits.
No, companies use stock dividends in place of cash dividends for tax purposes (dividends are taxed higher, many people do not want them but would rather have the capital gains on additional stock). This is often done in the form of stock splits..
Actually it's not illegal, it depends on the company. Some shareholders may force the issue in particular companies but there is no law stating that dividends must be paid out. Some companies never pay out dividends (Sun, Cisco, Microsoft, etc are all examples of this). The trend in the past 20 years has been to decrease the dividends given out or to not give one out at all. Microsoft uses stock splits to basically pay out a stock dividend to their shareholders...
If you go back and read the previous discussion on this, most of the posts were in favor of this guy getting slammed. Why try and bring up support for this guy again? It's obvious it didn't work the first time and that most people here think he should be punished.
Funny, I seem to remember a story not too long ago about E*Trade joining.NET, and there's that one about 6 months ago when the E*Trade mutual funds started to tank and they moved towards more MS stock... draw your own conclusions.
Funny, I remember seeing last week that E*Trade was moving their servers to Linux...draw your own conclusions without the conspiracy theories...
I personally am in high school right now (I graduate in May). I am not an outcast - I am very much the mainstream (class president, all-state football player) and I do not make it a point to discriminate against anyone because of how they choose to dress. I am a big computer geek and have held a pair of well paying jobs at computer companies. That being said, high school has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. I would trade it for nothing else. Because of the experiences I had in high school and the time I put into making myself successful, I am heading to one of the most prestigious colleges in the nation (West Point). I feel that what these kids did in Colorado was in no way justified by the way they felt they were viewed. I feel that these kids are entirely responsible for their own actions. Sure the parents and the system messed up along the way but in the end, it was the kids who decided to pull the trigger. They are ultimately responsible for what they did - no one else but them. Sure the probably felt hated and felt like outcasts, but the responsibility ultimately lies in themselves. I am sure that I will get lots of mail and I welcome it - but I felt like something had to be said from what appears to be the minority makeup of slashdot readers.

So, do they win the $200, 000 Award [slashdot.org]?
No, part of the requirement was that it must run on an UNmodded XBox...
