Each and every distro has its strengths and weaknesses...Another fact I have noticed is other proffesionals who love a feature of one distrobution and yet another detests it! Horses for courses....Personnally I love SuSE a lot due to having the best of many worlds, got the GUI setup routines and also have the opportunity to get down and dirty, that works for me in many enviroments. If Debian or distrobution X works just as well for you then power to you, just do not go around bashing others for there choice of flavor. >because M$-programming still gives you faster >money. A huge user base helps with that, but hopefully in a few years Linux will have a much larger user base on whcih to earn a living off. The areas where I think IMHO you can make a lot of money now would be in consulting. Two areas that come right to mind would be Sendmail configuration and custom Firewalls. Trust me there are a lot of companies out there connected to the Internet who are not just dot.coms and are relying on Fred the accountant to get there DSL or even T1 internet connection fully up and running! You are more likely to come across the Fred's of this world in small to medium businesses across the whole of the Western World. In large organizations it should be better, but its not always so. With this merger between Linuxcare and Turbolinux I do not know what will happen. Can they get customers? The customers they get can they make the majority really happy. Getting 100% happiness is not possible, as some will demand the impossible. These are just my humble opinions. Unfortuantly RH is one company that does not seem to want any standard. To take the risk they took is out of the question in this day and age of Linux, especially if you are the leader. With the new 2.4 Kernel getting closer and combining that with the 4X series of XFree86 you are going to have a much easier time installing and running those games as its basically a single API. Now they just have to get joystick support in there a lot easier... Back on topic with the Amiga: I cannot believe that they are still going...It was an excellent system for its time, but now it has gone past its life IMHO. Which is why most of what you hear is vapourware. This is a bad article from the simple fact that when these large companies (I have dealt with a few before) will spend a large amount of money, or have there systems running so many critical systems they have there own internal Techs put it through a ton of different procedures, just checking for failure points. You miss the point of Open Source, the kernel with its failures and its glories are totally open to all to see, therefore any point of failure has already been documented, and if you are lucky can either be patched quickly, or the patch is already there. SuSE, Redhat, Slackware all can make any patches to the kernel without having to wait for Linus to authorize it. The only caveat is that the patch you make is readily available at no cost to the public. To be an official part of the Kernel it does have to go through Linus. Whats so hard about that? The kernel itself is only a small part of the distro, its the core. The rest maybe distrobution specific. Trust me too, that SuSE, Redhat whoever would try and fix whatever is broke in a much faster time than is suggested by the article. Finally, the most interesting part of this is that they are using SuSE based machines. What really begs the questions is, who is the number 1 distrobution in reality? Take sales out of the equation, but what distro's are techs using most?
