Yeah, from what I've heard RoR doesn't handle legacy schemas particularly well. And there are plenty of reasons like the ones you mention why a team would choose Java or something else over RoR, I just don't think that scalability is a valid one most of the time.
> Rails definitely does not scale into the average J2EE project dimensions
From my experience the "average" J2EE does not have to scale very far at all. J2EE architectures are capable of scaling very well, but a great deal of the time the extra comlexity is unwarranted for the task at hand. Rails is a great for a the large percentage of applications that fall into this category.

Mono Beta 2 Released

Miguel, have you guys been significantly more efficient developing MonoDevelop in C# using the Mono class libraries than you were writing Evolution in C? In other words, is all the work that has gone into Mono worth it in terms of application development?
I just installed the RPM, and when I run linuxquake3 I get the following messages: ...loading libMesaVoodooGL.so.3.3: Initializing OpenGL display ...setting mode 3: 640 480 Using XFree86-VidModeExtension Version 0.8 XFree86-VidModeExtension: Ignored on non-fullscreen/Voodoo Received signal 4, exiting...
I found myself looking at the buying profiles of lots of companies this morning, and there are lots of interesting tidbits of info to be found. Like that fact that Intel seems to be buying books on linux device drivers, and that the government buys a whole lot of books on learning/troubleshooting windows software. The regional and educational circles are also pretty cool. people from my school (Tufts) have pretty good taste, it seems...O'Reilley's books dominate 4 out of the top five...
Has anyone spent a little time with this program? The screenshots look nice and people seem to have favorable things to say about it, but I was wondering just how stable it is at this point (0.4, I think), and how many features are implemented. I would really like to use this program to help teach myself QT.
Most of what I use my palm v for I could very easily use a boring old pen and paper organizer for. I could write down my meetings and classes, friends' birthdays, and jot down notes faster than I can in graffiti. But I don't want to! I love technology and gadgets, and I like to use them as much as possible. Writing down homework assignments in a college-ruled notebook is a chore for me, but busting out my palm v and interacting with a tiny computer in the middle of class or in a meeting is fun. That is why my palm pilot is becoming indispensable to me. That and the fact that all my friends are jealous... oh, and the games:)
I think he was just trying to say that Microsoft will respond to the threat of Apache, which they freely admit as being better, by integrating a small webserver of their own into win2000. They would hope to gain back some market share, and give people less reason to use Apache.
I'm in the middle of getting a BS in comp sci and I was just wondering what languages most people actually use, whether in the workplace or in their academic lives. What people actually use to get work done is not something we learn a lot about in college.
From what I've seen so far, the show looks very funny (on dec 31st 2999 Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve 3000 is on tv). It also seems like Groening and crew are putting a lot of thought and effort into making a world set in the year 3000 make sense, or at least be as interesting as possible. Can't wait!

Wow, my last comment was in broken english.

Anyone know what the problem could be? Thanks.

Has anyone tried this application? It's GPL'd, and sound like it tries to mimic the windows version of the palm desktop pretty closely.
has anyone visited the guestbook and had the page refresh to freebsd.org in about 3 seconds?

Yes! I'm glad someone else loves that movie. It pretty much put my childhood spy fantasies up on the big screen for me.
Too bad it is almost unplayable on my p200/voodoo 2. Does anyone else get acceptable frame rates on this system?

Saw that one coming. Rob even warned us. So...anyone have a mirror?

Man, first star wars on 60 minutes, and then a brand new Simpsons episode followed by the premier of Futurama. It doesn't get any better!
I was just wondering what it was. I ordered my teaser poster from the SW fan club and I got it three weeks later...it looks beautiful, too.
My friend got excel to open up and he could move the window around for a while. But problems arose when he clicked on a cell...
