fable doesn't have to be about lies. Main definition (and the definition I knew) is; a story that involves animals and where animals behave, speak and act as if they are human beings.
La Fontaine, Aesop, first years of primary school,... Does it ring a bell:)
Children doesn't need p2p to access porn. It is all over the place. Did you do a google search on "porn"; it returns 8,120,000 results, more than any p2p software can return. It is the responsibility of the parents to educate their children and restrict their childrens' use of computers.
Then use Perl5. It is very good. If you don't want to write programs in perl6 then don't.
Please note that perl5 is also being developped separately. And if you really know perl5, perl6 won't be very different. Even in perl5, if you want to use some modules like DBI, SOAP, etc. you need to learn how to use them. How is it different.
No, that is not true. Google is exactly doing that from the start. Of course they value a link from yahoo more.
Here is the neat idea of Google: Think the web as a graph of connected url's. At the start all url's were the same, but when you start the propagations of connectedness, then the value of some url's increase such as yahoo because many sites link to it and also many sites link to the sites that link to yahoo, etc.
And another simple idea of google that is very useful is this:
When a url links to another url, they don't just consider the url, but also the text that is linked. For example http://ww.bn.com is linked using the text "Barnes & Noble" on thousands of pages. So when you search google for "Barnes & Noble" you will get http://ww.bn.com as the likely candidate.
[thinking out loud]: Who the hell moderated this post to 4-interesting??? unless this post supposed to be funny as a reference to the Microsoft press releases.[/end]
Are you still under the effct of Microsoft bashing GPL. Now I can see that Microsoft did a good job at it. They obviously consulted psychologists before their compaign and it looks like it works. So, you think GPL means you have to give away all your IP. I am not going to get into the mysql trademark and GPL doesn't mean that anybody can use your trademark. all these are discussed before.
No, it is not. But there is effort to bonoboize it.

Books on Demand
·
· Score: 1
It is a pain and also expensive for the libraries to keep up with the latest version of all the new releases and buy and keep a copy of them in the library.
Here is the current journal situation: now almost all the journals available in pdf format through our school library (Uni. of California). You can search and print out the articles you are interested.
If they can print out books or book chapters on demand for the researchers, that will be much easier for them to a certain extend:
- They don't need to keep a hard copy of each book at each campus (UC system has bunch of campuses with each of them having big libraries). Keep digital copies of them in a main database and print the ones that are requested.
- it takes less physical space.
- It is cheaper for publishers too so the licensing fees for the universities will go down too.
Rule number one:
"You can't tell somebody what software to write especially if they are developping open source software."
Rule number two:
"Embrace and extend strategy works pretty good. So take the good stuff from a project and add up your genious to it and create a great product."
The reason why Miguel is excited about.NET is not because it is a standard, but because it is really well thought out and powerful platform. Microsoft actually did the hard work and Ximian is going to embrace and extend it.
Implementing.NET right now is stupid. If Microsoft pays you to do it, go ahead and do it (They paid Activestate a lot of money to do free/open source development). This is good for Microsoft. They will love it. This kind of issues arise when they have a dominant software such as Microsoft windows or Microsoft office. Then sa,ba, open office, WINE, etc. is a useful effort. But when you already have php, java/servlets/JSP/EJB, mod_perl/mason, etc. what you really want to do is sit down and think.
- What is the value.NET is going to bring to the customers. What is special about it?
- How can I combine existing open source software and technologies and create a.NET killer?
- How can I make it so good that Microsoft itself will try to be compatible with it to be able to stay in the market.
I know this is a harder path, but if you were to implement open source.NET, you will always be one step behind Microsoft and apparently Microsoft Office is not going to run on it.
As a final note:
-.NET doesn't exist in practice. There are no wide software support. Requires Expensive, slow and shaky Microsoft server software. Not to mention developpers are made to pay lots of money and forced to create passport accounts.
Don't think of it as Windows95/NT.
It looks like you didn't read my post carefully. I was talking about applle selling both hardware+software using x86, exactly what they are doing with ppc. Of course they won't let other companies to sell OSX computers.
It would be cheaper for them since the parts are more standard. And people would like it since they can install windows on it too.
The problem is that the seconf kind of licence you are talking about won't be GPL and it is against the principles of GPL. Go read www.gnu.org .
If you don't have RedHat selling linux software, you shouldn't be having any problem Caldera selling per seat licences. It is exactly the same thing.
You can always get GPL'd software for free, but if you think Caldera adds enough value to justify the per seat license, then go buy Caldera's version. If you think shrink wrapped redhat server with support is worth $100, go buy it.
I wander:
Apple is a hardware company. That is fine. But why can't they sell OSX on x86? Isn't that hardware too???
I mean they can sell x86 based OSX and make money similar to their business with ppc? They have the right to say that no other computer manufacture can sell OS-X on x86. So? What am I missing.
x86 is cheaper faster, and easier to manage for apple and the customers. That means more profits for apple.
>Should we come up with a GPL II that forbids the

>per-seat licensed OS?
You totally misunderstood GPL. "Free" is as in the freedom not in free beer. There is nothing wrong selling GPL'd software, enforcing per seat licences, etc. As long as you find somebody who is paying you, that is fine.
Only part missing from the story is that MS will use its OS dominance to dominate the internet. For example OS integrated instant messaging services which can be be used by third parties to develop on. Passport authentication, etc.
Companies would love to use MS services as opposed to IBm's or others offers. MS not only offers technology but also brings a huge number of potential users.
Please understand. It is not the feature list that matters. (Not that opera is missing any of those features.)
Konqueror is a good browser but it needs to become more mature. It screws up half of the web pages either because of the bugs or because of the fonts and their rendering. I use opera and konqueror and opera on linux mandrake 8 and KDE. (All available windows fonts are imported to linux). So both programs are working on the exact same environment. I open cnn.com. konqueror screws it up and opera works just fine.
I totally aggree. It is really stupid that the linux distributions doesn't distribute opera and make it the default browser for all the window managers at least until something decent emerges from other projects (maybe not on kde). Well at least if they want to sell their systems to newbie computer users.
Unless the font problems with konqueror on Mandrake and others is solved (probably mandrake's fault to some extent), there is no point of arguing.
On linux desktop you can enforce several fixed good X-font to be used in general. But when konqueror tries to display web pages, it encounters all kinds of fonts and half of the web sites become unreadable or annoying.
On the other hand, Having used tens of different windows desktops, I never had this much inconsistancy and annoyance before. There are things to be fixed before claiming a linux program to be better.
