The dumbest online service "everyone uses" buys the dumbest MP3 player "everyone uses". It's fitting, in a way.
Winamp was advanced when everyone was still fighting with Winplay3, but today it's sorely become diluted with useless bloat and features of questionable value. There are many players out there now that can manage your MP3 collection, rip CDs, and even burn audio CDs without needing to change programs.
And when it comes to player-only software, Winamp is Sonique's bitch-boy.
I think the *real* reason Nintendo gets upset over old NES roms is that they allow you to play the game without the need to coat the circuit contacts with slobber first.
Sure, Nintendo says you're "not supposed to blow on the contacts" but everyone does it anyway because it's the only way to make the damn things work. The slobber later causes corrosion which means the more you like a game, the more you have to slobber on it to get it to work each time you play it, the quicker it corrodes and the sooner you have to replace it. And replacements mean more money for Nintendo.
I personally like emulation better - it's all the fun of classic gaming with none of the slobber!
Back when I was in middle school, when school destruction was still taken as a joke, I used the most advanced technical feats I could muster in my early adolescence to make a game...
I took pictures of the school with my 35mm camera, scanned them with a cheap black and white scanner, and wrote a role-playing game in QuickBasic. It was an instant hit - well, with the students anyway.:)
I had plans later on when my programming skills improved to actually rewrite the game with a 3d engine and make it a 3d role playing game - sort of a cross between the old Lucasfilm Monkey Island games and doom. Then some psychos had to go and actually shoot up their schools...
Most amplifiers and speakers simply cannot handle a wider spectrum than 20Hz to 20kHz. Who cares anyway? Maybe my dog. Don't even get me started about more bits for more dynamic range... I'd like to see a dynamic range COMPRESSOR! Yes, I am SICK AND TIRED of not being able to hear dialog when watching a movie, but when things start blowing up onscreen, the walls shake and the neighbors think we're being bombed.
If you're going to get into frequences that go unreproduced, look low... Most people do not have the size woofers required to accurately produce the bass present in most music.:)
Remember, Joe sixpack still watches movies on a VHS 2-head VCR connected to his TV via cheap coax from the VCR's RF modulator... the audio comes out of a 3" speaker in the TV. And he thinks he's got it so good.:)
My patent is for a CD-R disc that has been rendered unusable due to any number of factors that could cause the writing process to prematurely terminate.
I usually hang out on the I-Appliance BBS since the I-Opener hack craze. After hearing about the:Cue:Cat, I got one from RatShack, threw out the software and wrote my own decoder in VB. It features editable translation tables, automatic copy to clipboard, no privacy invasion, and fully unoptimized 16-bit code. I mostly wrote it out of boredom. It was also totally written on a hacked Netpliance I-Opener; that should provide a nice warm fuzzy feeling.
