  2. GIF/BMP => ANSI on New iCE Web Site · · Score: 1

Does anyone know if there is a way to convert GIF or bitmaps to ANSI Art. I wouldn't think it would be that hard... similar to the creation of mosaic images.

Looking at that site has made me thinks that ANSI would make a great theme for my homepage.

  3. So much for Apple. on Serious CGI Bug in MacOS X Servers · · Score: 1

I almost feel sorry for Apple. This is such an embarrassing mistake. Even though it was only version 1.0 it shouldn't have a bug this serious.

This reminds me somewhat of that ICMP DoS attack that linux was vulnerable to a couple of days ago. Perhaps they can patch it fast before it becomes really embarrasing. Imagine all of the servers running OS X (all run only by apple advocates) disappearing from the net. The apple advocacy ring would be broken in two.

Perhaps apple should stick to what they are best at, producing fantastic, easy to use desktop systems.

Huh? -- This is a human interest story. It's not like he tried to detail the algorythims and hardware used in this number crunching, he dealt with the impact such a scheme could have on the world.

I personally like this article a lot better than his last.

While I am probably one of the worst spellers around, I always make sure my writing is in good form before pushing the "submit" or "print" button.

An ability to communicate is incredibly important in all walks of life, whether that be office politics or a simple note. It may seem anal, but it smooths the gears in our society. Imagine life if everyone understood *exactly* what everyone else was saying.

As an example, my favorite computer science professor has a bunch of degrees pertianing to computer science (Math, comp. engineering, comp. sci.) and and a BA in English. His lectures and his writings are crisp and they are what make him an effective teacher.

Good communication skills makes an effective leader.

Katz, you often write great stuff, but this "hacker" article seems only to stimulate simpathy and popularity among slashdotters. I think you missed your target big time.

  7. Where, oh where did my FORTRAN go... on Linux Takes Flight on Northwest Simulators · · Score: 1

Fortran has left college reqirements to make room for C++ -- In fact, my school is doing a major Java push for GUI development. Fortran is dying. dead. kaput. You just can't fit that many languages into curriculum, and the C++ is just so much more valuble in the workplace.
I think they *might* teach it somewhere on campus, but no one in thier right mind would take it becuase it's just wasted credits.
    Sorry.

Seriously though, that movie will be everywhere soon. Remember that /. story on the piracy of movies? Maybe the thief will make a good digital copy for the masses.

I have a conflict of interest here, I want to watch the movie 250 times, but I don't want to disrespect it by getting a pirated copy.

The saving grace of GNU/Linux is it's stable kernel, application reliability is a never ending headache.

I can't really complain that much, though, becuase after some app dies I can just start it right up again. The whole system doesn't come down as in other os's.

They have a commercial interest in "dumbing down" linux. Meanwhile all of us happy geeky programmers can continue to code (and document) the way we want.

I'm not saying that we shouldn't take responcibilty for our own documentation (I consider it a form of braging) - I'm just saying that the creation of cool programs is neatly complemented by Redhat and other comercial entities who can employ an armada of coders to "dumb it down."
