"Your statement ignores the fact that other than 'slightly' higher screen resolution everything else hardware is better in the transformer. In the process trying to make it sound as if there was something the ipad has that the transformer does not. Operating system excluded of course because everyone has a preference."
How many times have we seen benchmarks of Android devices versus iOS devices where even with the "better" hardware, the Android devices was slower -- because of Java and the still rudimentary GPU use by the UI?
"Have you seen the Transformer? Do you know what the concept is behind it? You don't really plug much of anything else into it, except maybe headphones. What exactly do you think you're going to be plugging into it?"
And a GPS dongle because the one that is built in is broken....
"Only rich people can afford to replace their $499 device every time they drop it. "
So does that mean only rich people are buying smartphones? If you have to replace one within your contract, you'll end up spending $400 -$500.
So what about laptops? High-end cameras?
I didn't consider $500 on an item I wanted out of my reach back when I was making $11.00/hour (and living on my own) to be unattainable -- back in 1996.
Google is exactly right in what they are doing. Who makes more money? Ford or Ferrari?
You have compared Apple's market cap, revenue, and profit to Google haven't you? You do know that only three of the public companies selling phones are making profits and Apple makes over 2/3rdd of the profit (worldwide) in mobile phones with Samsung making most of the rest -- HTC comes in third with one or two percent.
Roads were designed for ford cars not Ferraris. They ruled the auto industry because they made cars for real people, not just yuppies with too much money.
You really only think "yuppies" can afford a $399 iPad?
weather that's true or not, the majority of the world can't afford their products and will move to androids. $200 is the perfect price point. When a manufacturer finally comes out with a tablet that's got 4G (or better) a color eink screen (or equivalent from another vendor) with battery life measured in weeks instead of hours, and it's $200? That'll change the world over night. Are they there yet? No... but Googles a hell of a lot closer than Apple.
How are all of the low cost commodity vendors doing now? How is Nokia doing these days?
That's a problem with AIM. I don't have any problem with Yahoo chat. If AIM can't reliably deliver messages when it's not active, how well do you think it would work if your phone is off? What would happen on either the iPhone or Android if the OS decided to kill the process to free up memory? An iOS app doesn't even have to be running for you to be notified if there is message. Don't you think that is slightly more efficient than have 10 apps running just to check messages?
"Therefore you're fooling yourself if you think Android manufacturers are losing money per device. Some are, some aren't, it depends mostly on how efficient the engineering organization is."
You don't have to believe me, you are free to look at the publicly available quarterly reports from Sony-Ericson, HTC (barely profitable), Motorola Mobility (loss money every quarter for the last year and a half), or LG.
"Now if I had shorted Apple when they first dropped into number two position in the smartphone market,"
Apple was only number one by market share for one or two quarters. But if market share is important, how is HP doing in the computer market? They are number one by volume and tried to get out of the market.
"I already would have made a bunch of money. as of today See, Apple's margins are in clear and present danger, and where Apple's margins go, so goes Apple's stock price."
People said the same thing a decade ago. How are Apple's Mac margins compared to every other PC manufacturer?
But from where I'm looking, the top Android devices cost the consumer as much as the iPhone. Why do I care if the carriers have to pay a larger subsidy to Apple as long as my monthly cost is the same?
". The bulk of their products come from apple addicts who funnel a substantial portion of their digital recreational dollars through them,"
So why is it that in the US, most people who can buy an iPhone without switching carriers do so?
From their own financial reports,,,,
Verizon: 51% of all smart phones sold last quarter were iPhones AT&T: 80% of all smart phones sold were iPhones, Sprint: 51% of all smart phones sold were iPhones.
That must be a relatively large cult.
But why should I care if the carriers have to pay more to subsidize the iPhone? The price I pay is no more than the equivalent Android.
" without making real world price comparisons. They are not gaining any new market share they are losing it,"
Right, that must be why revenue and profit is not doubling year over year. Ask HP how much good "market share" is when it comes to selling PCs......
It seems impossible or at the very least, unwise for Apple to maintain their high margins in the face of steadily increasing Android market share in both phones and tablets. Is the market right? We shall soon see.
Where is all of the market share getting Android manufacturers? Most are losing money. Only Samsung and HTC are making any kind of profit and HTC's profit is miniscule and declining. Apple and Samsung make 99% of all profit in the mobile market with Apple alone making 73%.
So does that mean Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are monopolist because you can't buy their consoles separately from their OS and they control what gets sold on their platform? Can I run AIX on a non IBM server?
"Your statement ignores the fact that other than 'slightly' higher screen resolution everything else hardware is better in the transformer. "The transformer is the best proof of that. People want a laptop that isn't a laptop."
So was the fact that the TouchPad existed proof that people wanted a WebOS tablet?
So...
The Bluetooth chip in the iPad was "designed" to support Bluetooth devices....
iOS "was designed" to support the Human Interface Device BT profile to support BT keyboards.
The dock connector "was designed" to support (among other things) charging the iPad.
How does the Asus dock "work better" than the myriad of docks available for the iPad?
"It's an actual accessory designed specifically for this particular tablet, not some 3rd party attachment designed to try and fill a void. "
Right because an accessory designed for the iPad is not designed specifically for the iPad....
"Actually, looking at phones, Android is the market leader."
Too bad that market leadership doesn't seem to translate to things like profitability for the OEMs (besides Samsung) , or for developers.
"Have you seen the Transformer? Do you know what the concept is behind it? You don't really plug much of anything else into it, except maybe headphones. What exactly do you think you're going to be plugging into it?"
And a GPS dongle because the one that is built in is broken....

"You have to compare it to the defacto tablet, the iPad"
The Asus doesn't come with the dock. You have to buy it separately -- just like with the iPad.
So in your world there is a difference between a dock that you plug in your tablet and case with a keyboard and battery?
"Only rich people can afford to replace their $499 device every time they drop it. "
So does that mean only rich people are buying smartphones? If you have to replace one within your contract, you'll end up spending $400 -$500.

I didn't consider $500 on an item I wanted out of my reach back when I was making $11.00/hour (and living on my own) to be unattainable -- back in 1996.
So pairing a Bluetooth keyboard and a using a stand makes it a "kludge"?
You have compared Apple's market cap, revenue, and profit to Google haven't you? You do know that only three of the public companies selling phones are making profits and Apple makes over 2/3rdd of the profit (worldwide) in mobile phones with Samsung making most of the rest -- HTC comes in third with one or two percent.
You really only think "yuppies" can afford a $399 iPad?
And you really think that is just as fast and memory efficient as true natively compiled code?
That's a problem with AIM. I don't have any problem with Yahoo chat. If AIM can't reliably deliver messages when it's not active, how well do you think it would work if your phone is off? What would happen on either the iPhone or Android if the OS decided to kill the process to free up memory? An iOS app doesn't even have to be running for you to be notified if there is message. Don't you think that is slightly more efficient than have 10 apps running just to check messages?
So tell me again what you can't do with the iOS's "fake" multitasking?
You do realize that the information about write downs, poor sales, and declining financials is coming from Rim, don't you?
So this is going to be the year of Linux on the desktop.
How does Android being free and open help the consumer? Is the phone free?
And they have been saying that for 10 years. But for the last 5 or 6, Apple has been growing faster than the market.
"Therefore you're fooling yourself if you think Android manufacturers are losing money per device. Some are, some aren't, it depends mostly on how efficient the engineering organization is."

People said the same thing a decade ago. How are Apple's Mac margins compared to every other PC manufacturer?
I'm simply stating a fact.

Right, that must be why revenue and profit is not doubling year over year. Ask HP how much good "market share" is when it comes to selling PCs......
That must be why all of the Android and Windows OEMS are reporting record profits and Apple is struggling....
So do you own any game consoles?
So does that mean Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are monopolist because you can't buy their consoles separately from their OS and they control what gets sold on their platform? Can I run AIX on a non IBM server?
