interesting point of view. And what do you think about culture ? for me, culture is the influence of the past in our present. Maybe I'm wrong but i can tell you that the fact that our society is based on technology, materialism and stuff like that is because of our culture. And there is a great probability that this influence raised with "renaissance", century of light...

I myself used to work on yeast and bacteria. And what i saw (not only in my work, lab, departement but in my read etc..) is that human being is trying to modify animal's genome to its proper use.
Bacteria is a good model because it's simple (expression of genome is directly the response to the cell environnement wich is not another cell but the external environnement). But it's really usefull because it produces our antibiotics, yeat produces 3 fundamental things (for a french i think;) beer, bread, wine... bacterias produces a lot of chinese sauce, is useful for tea... so its good to make money !
and we're not trying to discover the mistery of life and stuff like that nonono, we're just learning how to make more money...
the first thing to proove that can be that nobody ask this simple question :
what's the non-coding genome for ?
coding genome (the gene) is almost all part of bacteria's genome, but it's only one percent of the human genome ? so why did we focus to the gene themselves ? maybe you can say that it's because we don't know now what's that for ??? but the really reason is that a few people, those who invest in research ask this question :

when you want to search if a sequence you discovered in a kind of genome (exemple a frog) is present in other kind of living creatures (like the well studied bacteria e.coli)
you post your sequence in a database (by the web) and it calculate the degree of similarity with sequences aldready disovered !
and even more it can tells you what this gene/sequence is "made for" in this organism...
a rare case of free community exchange in the great world of research...
it's quite funny to realize that people who are thought to be the best brains in the world act as little egoist rats that want to preserve what they won... this is why i quit the "BIG" biology research for the more exciting/funny/free research in computing...

I'm still a 3DfX addict ! i've got an old voodoo3 16megs PCI (not even an AGP one) and i'm not a stupid guy ! well, not because of this choice. Let me explain
My PC is not an old horse (athlon 600 with 128 Mo of SDRAM 100, not too bad:). So if I read all the test, the articles, the game review :
they say change it !!!!
so a a good consummer i've bought a beautiful GEforce 256 wowamazing-3-billions-of-texel-in-a microsecond 3 billions of ram 3 billions of everything 6 monthes ago for only 150 $ !
and guess what ? after 15 days of patching / configuring/crying/praying etc etc... My PC was as fast as my good old K6-233 witth a 3dfx2
well here you can see my stupidity : I really think that I had almost won my war against this card but i was tired.
i cannot say that i hate this configurating jobs (that'smy work in the real life too system-administrator) but when i buy a card, i don't want to pay 3 times for the waste of time. I understand that i need to configure a free stuff but this card is at the price of 2 playstations !!!!
and a 3Dfx Is PnP ! well until 3dfx3... you plug (you take the last patch) and you play, that's it and when you try to configure you're card you don't have to navigate through a maze of menu.
technically it's not the best card in the world okay ! but i can play to all the game that i had, i have and i will have because of one thing : equillibrium.
this card hasn't got a great fill rate etc but all that it have is homogenous so it's tremendously speed for it's price especially against a TNT2 (a friend of mine respawn an old voodoo2 to play with diabloII cus' it's TNT2 was too slow...). All games are running, you don't have to reconfigure your driver for every kind of game...etc etc etc...
it's like all things in informatique : do you want the best technology ? or do you want the best technology THAT WORKS ? I like dreams but not with my computer:)

When you talk about drugs : why did they failed (and why will they'll never be able to) in stopping drug dealing ? because they can't stop drug consumming.
I'm afraid to say that but every man (perhaps not the exalted ones like great martial artist's which can generate their own drugs in their own brain without the need of buying it !) every mammlian and who knows all the living ? (i'm not sure for the trees or bacteria), feel the need of taking drugs. And i'm not specifically talking about the 'evil' drugs that are regarded as the corruption of our society. You can ask me : why do they need it ? They need it because their situation is not good enough for them :

(i'm not sure for the trees of bacteria), feel the need of taking drugs. And i'm not specifically talking about the 'evil' drugs that are regarded as the corruption of our society. You can ask me : why do they need it ? They need it because their situation is not good enough for them : you take coffee 'cause your tired, you take soft drugs, another mediatic word, because it helps you to erase the bad things of the day or just to help you make 'la fiesta' (i'm talking about alchol, cannabis and television here), you take przak because you're really not happy and a little bit stressed, you take heroin because you're affraid of living, you take crack because you're tired of living... I can give you a huge list of things that can be called as drugs. Every society in every period of its history had its own drugs to content people and avoid them to try to change the society itself. So you can't stop their flow because the society need it and when it generate a such huge pack of gold/dollars/power youwant to control it. So you put it on a 'black list' of evil things you call it hashich instead of cannabis/hemp and you control the flow... Do you really think that the 500 billions of dollars generated by drug markets (thet's an estimation of course :) is only controlled by the men you called criminal ?
none of the good lawyer, bank chief, politician take thier own part of the gold eggs chick ?

But why did i say that ? don't be affraid this is not my introduction or 'mise en abîme' like we can say in my own langage (didn't you hear the french accent ?).
Like drugs men feel the need for liberty or at least the impression of liberty and the liberty to do such little things like do what you want with a film that you bought is a kind of liberty you see ?
and this is why we've got such differents reactions people fighting for freedom (an illusion i'm affraid to repeat that :) can be aggressive like cracker who disseminate DeCSS, idealists who want to fight in the name of justice and with the law on their right.
