  1. Re:Nah ah! on Happy 13th Birthday Linux! · · Score: 1

According to Linus' book, Linux 0.01 was released on Sept. 17, 1991. (Second to last line, Page 87, Just for Fun). So today isn't the birthday. :(

So today is the 13th anniversary of its conception?

Heise thinks that in the keynote he mixes up the Nuremberg trials (he can't even spell it) with the Milgram experiment.

    Ouch!

  3. Re:Why not rename CS? on Fewer Computer Science Majors · · Score: 1

As someone (dijkstra? soustroup? one of those guys with a funny name) said, computer science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes.

That would be E. W. Dijkstra

Why don't we change the name of computer science to something more appropriate. Algorithmics? Computational theory? (that one still comes too close to the word "computer") Symbolic processing? (and that one may just be my Lisp background showing through.)

Why not "Informatics"? (In Germany, instead of "Computerwissenschaft" ("Computer Science"), you study "Informatik".)

I wonder what'll happen in the EU anti-trust sanctions.

This just in: Microsoft already paid the fine of 497.2 million Euro. Details at Heise (in german, but you can always use babelfish).

Now that would be an appropriate hacker mascot: an animal that can only be caught by a virgin!

I haven't tried it, but there is a Nethack port for the Sharp Zaurus and the Compaq iPAQ.

  7. Playing Zork on my Linux PDA on The Wireless Arcade · · Score: 1

I just found the killer application for my Zaurus Linux PDA. Since it has a builtin keyboard, I was able to play the classic textadventure "Zork" with the help of an Infocom game interpreter while sitting in a waiting room for nearly an hour yesterday. (The people around me must have thought I'm crazy while I was trying to figure out how to get down that &%$ chimney.)
And of course I can always switch to a drawing application to make maps of all the rooms.
