  1. Re:So with old machines... on Linux Routers · · Score: 1

I use Moxix-Linux on five older machines for MP3 compression. Mosix works very, very good, and is simpler than the typical Beowulf type stuff in that you just have to seperate the jobs up and Mosix will automatically distribute it to whichever machine has the most processing power available. It works very, very well, as it keeps more running on my higher-powered boxes than it does on the lower powered ones. I currently have two 386s, two 486s, and one Pentium running Mosix, if the jobs get launched on your lowest end machine, they will migrate quickly to your fastest and you just run batch on the low-end box to keep all processors working full-time. As I said, it works very, very well.

Yeah, just remember that basically the same sort of accusations were levelled at Mozart and Beethoven during their time period. Of course, looking back, they don't seem to be nearly the freaky, fucked-up individuals they were percieved as. And you would be extremely suprised at the similarities between heavy metal and that sort of 'classical' music.

Metal is rock and roll a bit louder and faster/heavier. Rock and roll is forever, as anyone that has every felt it coursing through their viens would tell you. Backstreet Boys/NSINK, and whatnot will all fade in time, and be nothing. But these metal bands that weren't ever popular will leave a legacy because the people that listened to that type of music still do, and always will. They aren't fad bands, and if you only get into the fads, then these bands definitely aren't for you.

I can't believe that no one is mentioning the band Death. I would definitely say that they held the crown in my opinion on Death Metal back in the time period we are talking about. And to the guy mentioning Black Sabbath, a band that definitely deserves a genre all it's own: black metal (sometimes called dark metal). Ah, this is starting to bring back such pleasant memories.

Um, technically, Slayer was never a 'Death Metal' band. They were a thrash metal band, Metallica was a speed metal band, Megadeth was a techno-speed metal band, and Antrax were a borderline crossover metal band. There's the big four, let me know if you want more ;-) (oh yeah, Pantera is a Power Groove band).

And quite honestly, all we saw was that as the heavy bands got older they really did lose their ability to play anything requiring any skill. Look at Metallica (now a radio-pop band). And Slayer now plays hip-hop, or damn near it from what their last album sounded like. This isn't a sign that morality is coming back into style. This is a sign that even our greatest heroes are now falling for the 'money is everything' creedo that has become the mainstay of corporate sponsored American culture. Sorry if I sound bitter. The death of real metal has left me feeling a little empty.

Of course, metal still lives in my house. Just ask my wife and neighbors;-).

Whether you are working for the company, or you are 'consuming' their products, you are simply a part of the grand experiment. "How much can we fuck with them before they just completely lose it?" seems to be the most important question in the business world today. Sometimes they are unlucky and someone does lose it (the government, i.e. post offices, seems to be the worst at this), but it is suprising just how good businesses are getting at walking that thin line between sanity and insanity. Of course, a lot of that can be attributed to the fact that the businesses in question make the laws in this country (let's face it, 'the people' haven't been in charge for a long, long time) and can adjust what 'seems' to be proper behavior over time. Sad, but true.

Open Source was supposed to be dead by the end of last decade too buddy. Have you noticed that when corporations announce the death of something it just seems to keep getting bigger and bigger? It seems the only way they can really kill the interest in it is to embrace it. Unfortunately for them, in the case of Open Source (or Free) software, they can't embrace it so fully that it becomes "ANOTHER CORPORATE PLOT" in the eyes of its creators and the general population. I think the announcements of the death of Open Source that we hear every few weeks is evidence that the high-powered corporate interests that stand to lose the most from the "new" method of software development are getting a little scared of it. Not that they necissarily have to, but dinosaurs were probably just as scared of mice as elephants are. Something new, yet relatively small, can be very very frightening to the big old creatures.

I've been using Linux for five years and have constantly been told that I am wasting my time. Even now, running a business on it I keep hearing that I should just scrap it and go with .NET instead. I'm sorry, but I don't really see something that has steadily and slowly grown over the past few years just up and disappearing because some large corporations fear it. It's something that works for me and many like me. And more people gain interest each day.

Having said all of that, I realize that I have just been trolled. And yes, I will have a nice day ;-).
