"Just imagine, for a minute, how devastating it would be if SourceForge was hacked and malicious code....The danger is clear."
That's why you have tripwire servers and MD5 checksums...to assure that the files being downloaded are true to the original source or binary of the authors. When you conbine the aforementioned with PGP signatures...the likelihood of getting a large mass of trojaned software is remote.
This thread more than ANY other I've encountered re-affirms my belief that you should be licensed to use a computer and should require a separate license to access the internet. And next week I be even surer that the book banners are right. After that I'll believe that speech should be banned.
Alright folks...rumor and hatred are NOT new...We survived Gutenburg and we'll survive the internet and Al-Jeezera. If for no other reason than we are breeding faster that even the radicals can kill each other off.
Can anyone say B.O.F.H.

For the uninitiated...I'm referring to the Bastard Operator From Hell Stories found here.
A great read especially if you have ever gotten frustrated with a user or users.

THIS IS AN ANALOGY.
I make cars for a living. I need wreches to make cars. I want to produce better wrenches, so I can make cars more efficently. I know of ten other guys who also need wrenches for various tasks. We all work on creating better wrenches. I get a better wrench, using less effort than if I had built a better wrench on my own. I can now make better cars, and make them faster. I make more money with less effort. THIS IS HOW OPEN SOURCE SHOULD BE USED, i.e. cars = my product or service, and wrenches = tools I use to produce my product. MS is upset because the best use of OSS is to provide tools for use, and those tools happen to replace things microsoft wants us to pay for. OSS isn't in the same market niche as MS. If anyone should be complaining about unfair competition it's MS. The proper (IMHO) use of the OSS model has the side effect of reducing MS's marketability.
You mean the one billion chinese? Or do you mean the 25 people or so that actually matter to the Chinese government in regards to international policy?
OK....so Taco flamed microsoft. BFD. And I guess that the number of responses indicates some of us seem to care. All I really want to know is has someone heard from Microsoft as for when it will be up and running again, cause some of us might like to check our hotmail. I know some people can get to it but that doesn't really help the rest of us poor slobs. So in short ANY REAL NEWS?
You know...some of us actually have to give a damn about microsoft. I am employeed as an NT admin at a small software company. I need patches and the like today from said site. Just because most of the readers like to bash Microsoft, and/or use Linux personally (myself included), doesn't mean that it's not a topic of importance to the computer-using world. Don't let your personal dislike or bias interfere with important converage of an article of news!

Filter the web connection...Stop dirty material before you are ,er, exposed.
