Barbrady: Ok ok, let's calm down. People of Slashdot, do you declare shenanigans on the Amazon people?
Slashdot People: YEAH!!!!!!!!
Barbrady: Ok Amazon people. Do you accept this decree of shenanigans?
Amazon Woman: What the hell are you talkin about? This whole site is screwy.
Barbrady: Well that settles it. Everybody grab a broom! It's Shenanigans!!!
It's too bad my PS2 won't play any VCD's. I mean the DVD player is nifty and all, but still, my $129 pioneer DVD player is willing to play just about anything on plastic. Maybe Sony could put this in the first update.
Actually there is a whole group of people who are into this kinda of thing. You will usually find at least one at any LAN party (there is almost always a prize for best case). I've even heard of a group trying to come up with a Sphere case. Since that site got/.'d check these out:
Creative labs tried this about 7 or 8 years ago with the 3DO. It was actually a very cool device. The problem was is that it only worked with a very specific Creative Labs CD-ROM. If you try to do a search on the net for 3DO Blaster, there is almost nothing! In concept this might sound like a good idea, but really, if you want to play a console on your computer, buy a Dreamcast and a TV-Overlay card.
I work in Minneapolis doing your average IT guy stuff for a company thats core business is not IT related. All that stuff refers to people who work in the elite world of.com's and other companies with too much money. What about us who don't work in the valley, what kind of perks do we get? Nada, a paycheck and a slap on the back maybe even the occassional 'good job'. Now I know i'm not the only slashdotter who doesn't work for megadotcomdot.com. What kind of perks do you other guys get?
Why do people keep making comparisons to the hype of this to Tickle Me Elmo. The media is making this same comparison. Tickle Me Elmo was a suprise to retailers, no one expected it. The Playstation 2 has been available for pre-order for months, everyone knew it was going to be hard to get. The shortage with the PS2 was due to the shortage of the Emotion Engine (as stated by the Sony press release). Sony will also be shipping over 800,000 units between now and Christmas for a total of 130,000 units for the holiday season. You will be able to get one before Christmas if you didn't get one today. For the last year, October 26th is the release date, we knew they would be hard to get, people knew this. The playstation 2 situation is not the same as the Tickle Me Elmo rush was.
I stood in line at a Minneapolis Best Buy store for 13 hours (worth it). I noticed something kinda cool, the hardcore gamers are alot nicer than some of the parents who tried to get this for their kid.
In the morning, people were starting to get really worn down from the pouring rain and cold throughout the night, but still no one got out of hand. No one that is but the parents of kids that were to lazy to come showed up in the morning about an hour before the store opened. I remember when the Tickle Me Elmo scam went down hearing stories of parents literally fighting with other parents to get a little blue fur-ball. First fights, scratching, whatever, these are grown adults. We saw the same type of behavior when similar parents showed up in the morning for the ps2, they bitched, they moaned, they even tried to just get in line somewhere near the front. But we knew better, we are better than them. After nicely telling them that they need to go to the back of the line, they got very defensive. One lady literally yelled at me for 5 minutes trying to kill time hoping to sneak in when the store opened. We even overheard a different parent arguing that because the people behind us weren't in line at that exact moment, that she should be able to take their spot. When confronted and said that probably wasn't going to happen, her reply was 'well, that's how lines are formed, are you stupid?'. Talk about nice eh? I'm 25 and took off today and tomorrow to play some games. The 12 hours previous to these parnets showing up, 150 people like myseld froze our ass off to get one, not a single incident, everyone was super cool and friendly. When it was getting close to opening, people who might have dozed off in their car or something were woken up by people they never met before saying 'hey man, get up it's getting close'. It's nice to know that us gamers have a better ethic than some of our previous generations when it comes to courtesy and just plain being cool. I don't know if it's just where I live, but overall, I think that these parents need to calm down. If you are a parent who didn't think ahead and didn't get one, relax, it's a video game, your kid will live without it for a couple weeks.
So if I send $10 a month to my grocery store, can I just walk in whenver I want for a month and take what I want? This $4.99 a month math doesn't add up, the RIAA is up to something or a case of bad media.
"But if a stranger came into your house, looked through everything, touched several items, and left (after building a small, out of the way door to be sure he could easily enter again), would you consider that harmless?" - Charles Palmer
Let's just say my house is e*trade.
Number one, I lock my house, I hope you lock your house. So in order to get in you probably have to find that open window on the third floor that someone left unlocked. I leave it unlocked because, hell, no one's come in it before, why lock it. So we aren't talking about just walking in the front door anymore.
Now lets say that in my house (e*trade) I store your personal and financial information. You know that my third floor window is open, you even tell me on more than one occasion that I should probably lock it. I hear you, but just blatantly and recklessly ignore you. So, you break in to my house and wander around, realizing that anyone could have done this. I come home and find a big note on my front-door, it says, I came into your house, but don't worry, I locked the window when I left.

This is just a guess: It's possible that the post was made directly to the database as opposed to actually logging in and using slashcode to create the entry. This would go along with the message stating that the database was compromised and not that the site was actually hacked.
I agree. As kind of it was of them to fix the problem, it would be very easy to say 'hey don't worry we fixed it' in order to cloak a more devious hack. Hopefully out of respect for what slashdot does for the community this isn't true, but when it comes to hacking, you never know.

3Dfiles.com has the scoop on Duke Nukem.
And Hard[OCP] is going broke.
Billy now runs The Reg and it took me a couple minutes to figured out what was 'wrong' with Wired News
Didn't you watch the season premier of the Simpsons? The correct term is now Johnny 12-pack.
