  1. $5000 for Dell 5000e/ $3000 for Dell 8000 on Full Powered, Compact, Gaming Rigs? · · Score: 1

    My Dell Inspiron 8000 has...

    15" UXGA 1600 x 1200
850 PIII ( now they offer 1 gightz)
    256 mb ram (to 512)
    32 mb ati
    dvd (fixed drive)
    zip (modular)
    dolby digital sound
    s-video
    firewire
integrated 10/100 and 56k (pcmcia suk)
    20 gig hd
monitor connector, port replicator, serial, usb...

Mine cost under $3000 US with SF/CA tax (way too much for tax---especially if they cant keep the electricity going).

So, if you need the high power laptop, this is a good one for under three grand. If you dont like the specs, or you want more, wait a few weeks---they'll get better. It's a bit on the heavy/ugly side, but it gets the job done.

  4. Re:Fsck Government Funding on Librarians To Sue Over Mandatory Censoring · · Score: 1

good point. However it doesnt resolve the issue of where private funding usually comes from and who it is usually given to. Unfortunately it is usually given to those neighborhoods that are "better off" anyway. Neighborhoods of color and/or poor ones usually do not get consistant private funding. Many people will be left out with this kind of strategy.

  5. way to go on Librarians To Sue Over Mandatory Censoring · · Score: 1

yea to the librarians and the aclu! it is so absurd to think that the government should come in to public libraries and dictate what content is provided. the biggest problem that i see (other than censorship) is that the rules are there but the funding to install the hardware/software is not provided. anyone who has been in a government job knows that the top may create rules, but they are so far away from those who actually have to carry them out. we'll see what happens under the new leadership of the country. will this get worse with a conservative that isnt the sharpest knife in the drawer?

  7. Cool Things on Digital Doctoring · · Score: 2

I havnt seen a need for PDAs in my own life. They have always been neat little toys as far as my life was concerned. Some people really need them, but I think for the most part, they are status symbols and/or toys. My thinking changed after I saw my brother in law's Visor at Christmas. He is a medical doctor and he had a great database stored in his PDA. He had diseases and different conditions loaded in the prepackaged database that he could update as well. It seemed as if he found it very useful at work. Reading about Doctors and PDAs just reminded my of this minor enlightenment of my own.

  8. like a young (US Military) Internet on Great Firewall Of China Marches Forward · · Score: 1
OK, so again the Westerners of Slashdot are busy reading their pathetic Newsweek articles and thinking of big bad China and their political views. Most of those with the strongest opinions against China have never been there, nor can they speak Chinese (of any dialect). While it is true that many big Western news sites (like CNN) are blocked, many Chinese are not interested in the the viewpoint of the US and Western Europe.

    ---end of political statement---

Hearing that the Chinese want to develop their own Internet style backbone reminds me of the history of our own Internet. It was NOT established so you could share your pr0n with users around the world. The Internet was made to serve the purposes of the American government.

What the Chinese government wishes to use their national infrastructure for is none of the West's business.

While it would be nice if this new network would be compatible with the Internet, and it may lead to better communications between cultures that are very different (so we can see each other without the tainted vision of the medias), it is really up to China to decide what their money is being spent on.

  9. commerce and jobs on Alaska To Siberia... By Rail? · · Score: 1
Forget the corruption and starving people in Russia. That kind of thinking is always misleading when people think of mega projects. Our capital (DC) is a perfect picture of both corruption and poverty. The US is still the most powerful nation. If Russia could finance this project it could mean better

--relations with the US --trade with the Americas --jobs for the unemployed Russians --It could restore much of the national pride that has been lost

We Americans are quick to forget how important rails are in commerce. The majority of our products are shipped by train. This project is more than just Amtrak ( and with Amtraks record of crashing, I hope theyre not allowed in that tunnel). The products dont have to originate from Siberia and Alaska either. A constant flow of goods between the land masses would benefit trade. Most big ships (PANAMAX) cannot go through the Panama canal either. This tunnel would mean competition with the container ships as well.

besides, me thinks that would be one helluva roadtrip!

  10. SF on Hacking The City · · Score: 5

Jamie is pretty much right on. The double edged sword that created "the city's" recent boon is also killing off many of the same things that attracted the 'new economy' in the first place. San Jose and the rest of silicon valley (to me) is a suburban sprawl. The closest thing to a city here in the bay area is San Francisco. The same clubs and micro brews that made up soma are disappearing---turning into loft/studios. Thing is...if all there is left are office spaces and living quarters because all the small cool places are gone because they cant afford the rent, the inspiration that fuels SF will be gone and so will the talent. Many are already spreading outward to east bay (houses in the ghetto areas of west oakland are around $300k+ now). If it keeps this trend, many including myself, will take the money and run. It is sad that the money we bring to this city doesnt close the cultural gap between ourselves and New York (a city that never really sleeps). It would really suk if all we had left were places like the Metreon to go to (sony can afford any city!)

Spokesmen usually dont bring Supreme Court Justices to power, nor do they have a say in choosing representatives to other nations. And besides, voting isnt just about electing officials, its also about determining local laws as well.
