Though you're right in the rest, Megabyte SHOULD mean 1000000 bytes
Definitions of other words may change, but prefixes used to indicate multipliers for standardized units should not, the computer industry is an extreme minority in this case.

>the point of a lot of these comments have one underlying premise - lets get it for free. Well that's great for you, but now who's worse SDMI and the lables, or you? You're both bending us over...expecting us to work for your enjoyment for nothing.
I'm glad someone pointed this out... Everyone always wants something for nothing, but the trouble is...that in a lot of cases, the more you get it for nothing, the harder it is to make the something in the first place.
Free music isnt like free software, it doesnt cost a hacker anything to write a killer app, a computer doesnt cost much, and an operating system and the required tools are free
but the tools required to make music are very expensive. Hard disk recording using a PC brings down the price significantly...it removes the cost of things like hiring a studio, etc... but that means you have to buy all the equipment yourself, and it takes money....a LOT of it.... most musicians are musicians for one reason....they LOVE it, but it would be nice to think, that after throwing tens of thousands of dollars into their passion, that they could get a little return on it, and the only way they can do that, is if people pay for it somewhere along the line, whether it be CD (sure they may only get $1, but at least the DO get $1, they get $0 from piracy) or digitaly distributed music.
jacksprat is right, format DOESNT matter, as a musician, i dont give a shit HOW people buy my music, as long as they DO, SDMI is not the answer, because it WILL be crackable
the only answer is honesty, and compassion on the part of the consumer
A thought to those of you with gigabytes of mp3s that havent bought a CD in months, years or whaterver, but who's music collection still grows regularly...pay a visit to a music equipment store, have a look around, add up the price of a guitar, a bass, a good keyboard, a computer, a mixing desk, effects units, speakers, amps, racks, microphones, microphone stands, guitar pedals, drums, cymbals, sound modules, professional quality sound cards and music software such as cubase
then ask yourself if a love of music alone could create that sort of money?
That's not necesary at all, because as the aritcle points out, sites will be classified the same way films are, and only those of R, RC or X rating would be banned. In Australia, merely saying the word fuck would not get you much more than an MA which would not be banned by anyone.
However, the bill still sucks, and does have huge potential to result in the banning of a large number of sites that really dont deserve it. (not that any sites actualy deserve it).
I would have thought that if owning a gun were a way of overturning a government decision, then the one in which they restricted the guns would have been the one overturned
that one got through though...so i really fail to see what owning a weapon has to do with a disagreement over governtment policy
If you think that owning a gun will make a difference, then you mean to say that you think people should kill people they disagree with and replace them with ones they do agree with rather than tell them that they disagree first..and then vote them out of power if they dont change their mind
Weapons serve one purpose, to kill, not to change people's minds
The gun control laws and the buy - back scheme were more of a fairly transparent attempt by the government to win votes rather than any real attempt to take away rights.
This is a similar situation, except it's not the votes of the people the government was trying to win, it was the vote of One man, as has been mentioned in a number of posts
All in all it just goes to show how badly the Australian system of government is working right now, that the government is more concerned about the good will of one independant senator than that of voting Australians
Mega IS 10^6, that is it's definition, and should ALWAYS be it's definition.
kilometer = 10^3 meters
kilogram = 10^3 grams
so kilobyte should be 10^3 bytes
because that is what kilo MEANS, it cant have two definitions.
the use of kilobyte to mean 1024 bytes is incorect, regardless of how common it is in our little insignificant corner of the number using universe.
I think that now is the right time to change, before the usage becomes so prevalent as to cause confusion in other areas.
8E6 Bits == 8 * 10^6 Bits == 8000000 Bits != 262144 Bits
Though you're right in the rest, Megabyte SHOULD mean 1000000 bytes
Definitions of other words may change, but prefixes used to indicate multipliers for standardized units should not, the computer industry is an extreme minority in this case.

mp3 is not the problem piracy is.

Let's take a slightly calmer look at things
what happened?...they aquired Nullsoft...
while that may justifably make a few people nervous, it in itself is not a reason to hate AOL
it's what they may or may not do with it now that they have it
dont hate for hatred's sake
