  1. Re:Somehow... on Vista Service Pack One Almost Here · · Score: 1

Agreed, since Windows NT4 Service Pack 1 I have had to make backups of the machine's OS before committing to a Service Pack, as even removing the Service Pack wouldn't resolve the problems that the Service Pack created upon installation. Let's hope, for the sake of the support community, that this will be a repeat of the XP SP2 release, with as little problems as possible.

One important question though the article doesn't seem to mention is whether the space debris will plague future generations (when space travel may well be more common place). Won't most of this low-level space degree simply get burned up sooner or later or is that kind of like saying "well plastic pollution does biodegrade eventually"?

Well, by the time we develop the technology for interspace travel, we will have already tackled the problem of collection and recycling for this low level space junk, just like we've tackled the problem of recycling since the 1970's realization of litter. We've also patched up the ozone layer after years of selling canisters of hair spray as well! Humans 4 teh werld!

Believing that there are no people who program, sequence, and arrange audio through electronic methods reading slashdot is a farce. There are plenty of people (like myself) who do much more than coding or netadmin on GNU/Linux.

In fact, one of the sole reasons that I still use MS Windows is the fact that I cannot find any decent usable audio software written on any other platform, and believe me I've kept my eyes out for anything somewhat usable for quite a while.

Feel free to contact me if you need samples. I have done sample sets in the past and have been paid for them, as well as BGM loops.

The average consumer doesn't brainlessly make a computer purchase. Most of the time, a consumer will have a friend, coworker, or someone that they can consult with for hardware. If we, as hackers, are the lowest demographic, then our knowledge eventually propogates to these consumers, granted our advocacy is done appropriately.

Case in point, Napster. We knew about Napster for quite a long time before it's popularity ramped. Word-of-mouth increased its popularity. Make sense?

Basically, linux needs more (automatic) driver support, less initial configuration, and a fully MS Office-compatible productivity suite in order to become an attractive alternative to Windows for the general public.

  14. Re:But that is only the average FPS that is over 2 on Debunking The Need For 200FPS · · Score: 1

The actual necessities that should be considered should be maximum polygons on-screen while still staying above 80 fps. Texture really isn't much of an issue, considering that 64 Mb graphics cards are going to be around the corner at quite an affordable price soon. So what's that leave? NURBS, and polygons, of course. Eventually, we will have to add some more benchmarking for all the shaders, particle animations, and soft body dynamics that are starting to come accelerated by hardware now. Benchmarks need to be more standardized, and have a minimum frame rate allowable for using these benchmarks, so that these cards may more readily be shown their true performance. Crimoney, why aren't our sound cards this advanced? Where's analog modeling synths, 3d stereophonic positioning, DSP effects, and other goodies we could have accelerated on the card? Wouldn't that be easier than graphics, nowadays?
