  1. Get a Good Book on Reverse Engineering? · · Score: 1

I highly recomend the book by Michael Abrash, The Black Book of Graphics Programming. It has 'The Zen of Code Optimization' and 'The Zen of Graphics Programming' in it as well as most of his other work for DDJ and some unpublished stuff in the 2nd edition. Very good reference, it's easily readable, that covers most of the basics of 2d and 3d graphics. You will need to learn assembler regardless b/c you'll need hand optimize a few loops that eat cpu cycles and so forth. If you just want source look at some oss stuff, it will at least give you ideas if you're work on win32 or a good code base for *nix.

I've reading a lot of fantasy lately and the concept of not knowing your foe is a very old trick, but this was the first time I've seen it on screen. Your imagination much better at scarring you than anything the producers could have shown. People always fear the unknown, I know I was thinking of all the "horrors" I'd seen in other movies and read about, that's what gave me problems sleeping. I'd like to see more of this type of directing in others genres.

  3. Score pool + alignment. on Several Slashdot Notes · · Score: 1

I like this idea but think that the basis for the pool should include an average.

For example I rarely ever post because I haven't read comments until recently unless the subject was something I had a great interest in. Now I read the comments(the fist few at least) for most of the /. articles, thus increasing the chance that I will post. My pool score and/or my alignment will be low. This is not really a bad thing, but for those like me the initial score of the post is going to be low because I haven't posted much until now.

I think that there should be an average of say score * 10, then use -10 thru +50 to break up into -1 thru +5 for alignment. It gets very hard to get into the upper brackets the more you post, so you should have pool points as well, just reduce the amount of points moderation adds to the pool.

I like this idea, for those of us(ME!) stuck on dial-up's, downloading the entire chunk of comments which I'll probably skip anyway gets to be frustrating. I also agree the the -1 to +5 scale is a bit small, you could possibly add a decimal(eg. *.1) to it so that 1 moderator wouldn't knock off a comment but 10 out of 400 would.
