  1. OpenOffice IRIX port on SGI Layoffs Hit XFS For Linux Project · · Score: 1

Does anyone know if the OpenOffice IRIX port is still going to happen after this? It appears Jeff Hanson at SGI was responsible for the project and I was looking forward to using a decent office suite on IRIX. It appears OpenOffice/StarOffice does not like to run back across from a remote X display.

  2. The Decline of Metaphysics is the Result of $$$ on Why Language Advocacy is Bad · · Score: 1
Especially when this is applied to political philosophies, it is clear that the lazy lobbyist point of view has taken over American debate. Don't get me wrong, there's still rhetoric. However, the decline of metaphysics in the modern age would seem to be a clear result of the polarizing influence of political advertising and lobbying. Most people would prefer to ignore your entire discourse except which items reinforce which side of the issue.

When I try to explain to Americans that there is really no right or left, but a complex composition of the basic political philosophies of Libertarianism, Socialism, Green ("clean up after your own messes, whether labor, environmental, medical, etc."), and Tyranny, they won't acknowledge the culturally-pushed polarization. Both the Democratic and Republican parties are Libertarian ("the free market will clean up our messes") parties, which is why they almost always agree on issues that don't determine elections. The "leftism" or "rightism" is merely their degree of belief in Socialism (standing military, welfare, Social Security, subsidies) and there is far more to politics than that. For example, supporting a line item veto or the presidential right to declare war prior to a Senate vote is a practice of Tyranny. The American Green Party is, in fact, about two-thirds Green and one-third Socialist, but strongly anti-Libertarianism and Nader splits further towards Socialism (health care, especially).

How many supposedly busy Americans will sit still through even abstract metaphysics of that sort when they're supposed to be out making money for "the machine" and lobbying their beliefs on advertised products? There is nothing wrong with the words Socialism and Tyranny describing mainstream political beliefs on specific issues. We're just all taught Civics like the Bushes: Capitalism good, Communism bad.

The man graduated high school with a C average, for crying out loud. He must be really impressive to make it into Harvard undergrad with a C average. Even National Merit Scholars with a 34 ACT can't do that. I should know (well, B+ average in my case). The man can't even talk correctly in most of his speeches.

Certainly 49,819,600 people can't be all that wrong now can they?

When 50M people agree, we call that a paradigm and we all know what happens to paradigms, don't we? Frankly, Nader was probably the most qualified before the Democrats horribly maligned him. Anyway, the lettuce head of the Administration will be the proof enough.

  4. Loved it... Heinlein's characters are great on Stranger In a Strange Land · · Score: 1
I've read and re-read Stranger in a Strange Land and I love the book, especially the portrayal of the Fosterites. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I was an atheist being forced to attend a Catholic school the first time I read it.

I have to agree that Starship Troopers permanently belongs in the category of pulp, but Have Spacesuit, Will Travel is an excellent read about the failings of conventional education techniques in the gifted. It seems to be a call for ungraded mentor-style schooling more like the Sarah Lawrence/New College-USF model.

Also, I couldn't understand where Scrymarch drew his conclusions from, so I'll have to assume he doesn't get any.

  6. Computerized Voting Leaves No Paper Trail on eLection '04 · · Score: 1
Simply put, the danger of computerized voting, especially as it now exists, is that it leaves no paper trail or evidence of fraud. Internet voting is even worse. Punch cards and such may seem outdated, but for voting purposes, they're often superior to computers. A computerized recount means nothing, since the fraud has already been long done.

Why couldn't the same sort of confusion created on the Palm Beach County ballot be done just as easily on a computer?

  7. Bad trend-I can see why the US gov't supports it on 'Hacking' To Be Declared Illegal · · Score: 1

I betcha the US State Department partly supports this treaty so Americans can do security auditing that Euros can't. I feel a sort of moral obligation to feel sorry for the admins in the EU after they can't legally write tools or use scanners on their own machines, but it does appear almost like a devious plot to help the growing American security consulting industry export their services. Even the U.S. government can't be so ignorant to believe that nmap, nessus, and other "hacker tools" aren't also tools of the trade.

  8. SGI has an excellent intern program on UNIX Internship Programs? · · Score: 1
I spent last summer at SGI and I'll probably return to fight ya'll trolls for my job. As far as any previous flame about Linux saving their company, it doesn't need to, since they just put out a whole new line of much nicer machines, e.g. Origin & Onyx3000 & Octane 2. The only one not out yet is the O3 and they're trying to learn from their mistakes on the O2. Linux should help SGI later because they won't need to lose money developing IRIX.

The corporate culture is excellent. I worked in the Eagan facility where every single employee (soon to change to officer/engineer/tech writer) gets his or her own office. Department events are held about every month and intern events are once per week. Travel is free and out-state intern housing is free in Eagan and every Friday, Beer Bust=~/3PM/

I found it funny how similar Valenti's description of Napster mirrored the definition of the World Wide Web. "Now why would anyone want to share files with two million users he's never met?" Let's go find Tim-Berners Lee and lock him up for providing the distribution medium for Napster software. :)

  10. Linux Router Project Security by ramdisk on Other Uses For The Linux RAM Disk? · · Score: 1
Well, I've been working on an application to utilize the volatility aspect of ramdisks as a method to eliminate trojan horses and clean hacked systems instantly.

Since the Linux Router Project runs from ramdisk by default, it's an excellent candidate for this. My app runs like Tripwire, but very often, and detects changes in system files. If such changes occur, it logs it to a logserver and reboots or re-reads the write-protected floppy back into ramdisk. Look mommy, no more trojan horses on poorly secured firewalls!

The app is called Tripwall and the original project site was http://homepages.hack-net.com/code_valley/tripwall , but this is down so I plan to move this to http://cise.ufl.edu/~cl0/tripwall.html.
