  1. Re:open group still matters? on Open Group Releases DCE 1.2.2 as Free Software · · Score: 1

As a former AFS and DFS administrator, and Decorum presenter, I agree. The first thing I looked for in the releases was the DFS blurbs.

I have yet to see any other filesystem that delivers true POSIX single-site semantics at the scales achievable by AFS/DFS. Add the intrinsic security, and it's like nothing else.

That said, this is only about 5 years too late! Still, perhaps something interesting will happen now that horse is out of the barn ....

  3. This isn't so 4 years ago, it's 12 years ago on Zero Install: The Future of Linux on the Desktop? · · Score: 2, Interesting

it might even be 15 years ago.

At CMU they had this thing called AFS, depot, and emt. It did all of this, and more.

openAFS, Coda, or even NFSv4, depot (or stow) could all be used to really build something interesting. (emt could be improved, but it wouldn't be hard).

Cool idea, but why just stop at the desktop?

  4. Re:Tesla Invented Radio, not marconi on Signor Marconi's Magic Box · · Score: 1

It wasn't just any court, it went all the way to the US Supreme Court in 1943.

Tesla was vindicated posthumously by the verdict.

    Justice was eventually served.
No thanks, to Andrew Carnegie, Edison, and Marconi who all had a hand in the "mysterious" reversal of the US Patent Office's rejection of Marconi's patent application due to Tesla's prior art.

Of course, the greatest injustice to this day is the common association of the name Edison with Electric Utilities.

  5. Lamar Smith on Congress Eyes Whois Crackdown · · Score: 1

Unfortunately, I live in this pinhead's Congressional District. Being an EFF member, I of course send him a steady stream of letters. His responses to date have been so predictable, it's almost comical.

This guy takes money from Hollywood. He rivals old Fritz, and Orin as one of the RIAA and MPAA's most dependable bitches.

I only wish the EFF (or some group like them) would take a more active role politically. Basically, vote both him and the rest of the Hollywood shills out of office.

In all of this discussion about the RIAA, and big record companies, I am amazed that nobody has mentioned a somewhat successful alternative, DGM -

For years Robert Fripp (leader of King Crimson) has been quite outspoken about the "ethics" or lack thereof of the entertainment industry. His accounts of the steps that led him to form DGM are very enlightening. He had an accompanying site, bootlegtv.com, which is now dead.

It is very clear that he gone well past the stage of just talking about it, and actually doing something.

As a former gigging musician, who retreated into the technology industry, I can only say that I wish there were more like him today. (I also wish that Zappa was still alive, because I know he would be "doing" something.)

  8. AFS on IBM Open Sourcing AFS · · Score: 1

I was an AFS admin for 6 years, and did DFS too. The problem with both is that they both have one foot in the grave. I don't put too much faith in Coda or ARLA either. Why? Hardware (SAN, NAS, etc...) approaches are going to take over, and push software solutions out of the way. Interestingly enough all of the original developers that left CMU to go to Transarc (even the faction that went on to Fore Systems) are up to something! There is a startup which is quickly getting to critical mass. (And they have a huge brain trust in Distributed File System technology). Look up Spinnaker Networks. I found out through some contacts that this game was on. I'm really anxious to find out more myself. They're to storage techology what Transmeta is to processor design.

  9. It only took 3 years for this to get printed on Proprietary Extension to Kerberos in W2K · · Score: 1

I've been using every iteration of Kerberos (V4, the AFS variant, V5, and DCE). Why is this a surprise? This went rippling through the comp.protocols.kerberos newsgroup and several mailing lists at least 2 years ago, when MS published their first White Paper. It was discussed at length by a small group of people interested in not seeing yet another bifurcation of the protocol. (Of course, the MIT and OpenGroup people dilly dallied around for years before getting V5 and DCE back in synch!) The only thing more frustrating than the time, is to see it finally acknowledged now.
