  1. Not as bad as it was put in the shortdesc on UK Satellites May Keep Cars From Speeding · · Score: 1

The /. article had the tracking thing the other way around: according to the original article, the CAR tracks it's position by GPS (satellite) and adjusts max speed according to a max speed map. This is not necessarily good.

The /. article made it sound like the satellite tracked the car's position. This is very different and definitely bad.

Anyway, the UK gov't seems to be fond of monitoring equipment all the same, given horror stories about cameras all over major cities and license plate tracking.

Sure hope I didn't just post a comment without a body. Something went wrong. Whatever.

The deal is, I do spend _most_of my time behind the Monitor but certainly not _all_ if it. In fact, I just came back from a party (sober - yeah right) to find this article on /. So geeks spend their time away avoiding other people IRL? B(MF)S.

Even better, if I recall it right, Nauru was actually mentioned as one of the data heavens. Only once, I think, though.

  5. _National_ Jam Echelon day? on Congress Ixnays FIDNET; Prez Finds Money · · Score: 3

Since project Echelon rises above the USA's (official) territory (by definition), why not make it a World Jam Echelon Day? That would really screw their system over.

As a start, you can prepare yourself by extracting the naughty comment found in the (source of) the National Jam Echelon Day page, and on the day itself, put it up in your webpages, attach a conveniently small subset of it to your signature and anything else you can think of (have your browser/squid report itself as something naughty, and every HTTP request may be tagged). Anything you can think of.

Let's hope I won't forget that day myself. I'm notorious in forgetting long-term stuff :(

The 3DNow! advocacy guy's got it all wrong. It is a conspiracy from the NSA, FBI and CIA to make people stop donating their spare CPU time to Distributed.net.

  7. Re:I'll use paper for now, thanks. on Beaming Money · · Score: 1
Well, their FAQ doesn't cover this, but this quote from their "About PayPal" is interesting:
You can beam the PayPal[tm] software to your friend and then "beam him some money" instantly. The system charges your credit card when you next sync your device, and your friend can register later at PayPal.com.
So my guess is, that if you send money to someone, and your storage medium would err, accidentally be damaged, the transaction will never be sent and your victim will not get the money.

    Mo Money!
