I want the day to come soon where I can put a DVD, CD audio, CD-R, CD-RW, or a CD full of MP3's in my single component, and let it play. The stereo + DVD player + computer is too much of a headache now for a single media type. It's all software, so there's no reason why I shouldn't be able to buy a single player (that looks like a current CD component in a traditional stereo rack system) that play everything. If it's a DVD, the amp should be able to be smart enough to divert the video to my TV. C'mon electronics industry! How hard can this be? Hell, already my computer can regonize all of this. Now, I want to go to Circuit City to buy a simple device that sits in my living room.

Langauage advocacy indicates a developer's immaturity, and is something that most successful developers quickly grow out of.

  14. Specializing: Yes! on Why Software Still Sucks · · Score: 1

One great point he made was that software should be more fragmented by who develops it. Everybody shouldn't try to develop everything. As a database developer, I see this every day. C++ hacks or web people try to develop database apps that are an absolute mess. All software is NOT the same. Just because you can write device drivers does NOT necessarily mean that you can also design a database, or produce a decent web page, or write a good game. Developers need to realize this. The world of 'software' is much too huge for everybody to be trying to do everything. Do you go to one doctor for everything? Heck no! Would any self respecting podiatrist accept a job as a heart surgeon? Heck no! Why are software developers still trying to do this, and in turn, make a total mess when developing outside of their specialties? And, I'm not advocating sticking to a language, but at least one type of software, along the lines of the ones I've already mentioned: device drivers, games, databases, web pages, embedded devices, client-server apps, OS, etc.

The way that most people get 'money', is from doing a service for someone else that they would not normally do, for which the other person receives a benefit. This is called 'work'...

  18. Re:HTML is not a layout language on Could LaTeX Replace HTML? · · Score: 1

Except that already with server-side technologies like ASP, CF, and PHP, we already have been building web apps with content-independent layouts for years. With these technologies as mature as they are, it's unlikely that even XHTML will make inroads any time soon. XML/XHTML is a step backwards. It involves passing long text strings of data to the client to process. With current technologies, the data is processed on the server, giving the user a seamless and quick HTML interface.

  19. Re:HTML is not a layout language on Could LaTeX Replace HTML? · · Score: 1

XML has nothing to do with layout, whatsoever. XML is a way of describing data, period. It's simple a replacement for delimited strings that have been used for passing data between objects.
