  1. Re:Whooptyshit, one percent. on Mozilla Gains on Internet Explorer · · Score: 1

Let me explain something that a lot of people are missing here. The percentage scale of market share is NOT linear. The innovation curve that has proved most realistic has two inflection points, one at 10% and the other at 90%. The slope of the curve from 10 - 90 is VERY steep. That means that if Mozilla gets to 10% market share, it won't be long before it is the most dominant browser in the marketplace.

This curve has proven true for many industries, including the browser industry itself. IE overtook Netscape very quickly back in the day. Other industries that proved this trend were the adaptation of cell phones and long before that, cars (as shown the curve below).

The worst thing to do when you above the 90% market is to look down on those below 10% and say that they are far away.

try multizilla (mozilla.org homepage link) for tabbed windows. Also, if you used galeon in Linux, you would get this same effect. Everyone is giving the option for tabs now because it is becoming excedingly popular, but it will always be an *option* since not everyone likes them.

  3. how Paul Revere must have felt on Further Updates On Terrorist Attack · · Score: 1

I stayed home from work today because the thought of programming just seemed insignificant compared to the disaster of the present time. After reading some news posts, I thought about running out to get an American flag to hang at my apartment...after determining that Home Depot had flags, I immediately raced out to pick one up. Once I arrived and found that there were still flags left (they were selling them off the walls) I put it across my handle bars and started to ride. I thought about hanging the flag on my apartment and it seemed so weak, so trite and Bush and all the other leaders told us to be strong. The sentiment here in California (Santa Barbara) has not been particularly strong and not many people have been saying much...passion started to come over me and I began to feel this burning in my heart to ride...so I began, much like forest Gump is portrayed on his long run...I started riding down the street towards UCSB...cars honked, people gave thumbs up...I knew I was on a mission...someone had to bring hope to this small city so far away. As I continued to ride, the passions grew, more people honked, I began to shout things, patriotric things. I don't think in my whole life I have ever appreciated what it meant to be patriotic. And now, by no rational choice of my own, it had overcome me. I continued to ride, sometimes shouting, sometimes in silence, always in remorse of my fellow citizens who lie in the rubble in our two strongest cities. Countless people responsed, countless people didn't...but if I gave even one single person hope or pride then I felt it to all worth it. In the middle of my ride, I began to feel pain and thrist. Parched, I stopped into a nearby gas station and asked the attendant if he would so kind as to spare a drink from the fountain sodas. I told him I was bearing the American Flag and had forgot to bring along my wallet (all I had were CC), and he kindly assisted me (Chevron). I continued on, not sure when I would stop, not sure what else would happen, but I had to, for what else can one do in the wake of such tragedy than to try to share feelings with the reast of society that remains alive, but still affected.

While I hate Microsoft...it is a "debate" type of adversary and I would never wish death upon them (unless of course the movie Anti-trust came to a reality as Independence Day came to a reality today)...everyone, watch independence day if you aren't feeling patriotic enough..

...from www.betanews.com Senator Hatch Disapproves of Government Stance on Napster Tuesday - 5:36 PM ET In what may be a surprising announcement to some, if not all persons in the United States, reknown Senator Orrin Hatch has stated publicly that he refuses to endorse the DOJ stance on Napster. Acording to the Newsbytes report, Senator Hatch sent a letter this week to the federal district appeals court expressing his distaste for the way things are going, saying "Given the importance of the issues to be decided, I think it important that the Court be under no misapprehension that the brief (filed by the Justice Department's Civil Division and two other agencies) necessarily expresses the views of the Congress in this matter." The DOJ quickly declined to comment on the matter.

  7. What everyone doesn't get... on Universities Refuse To Ban Napster · · Score: 1

What everyone doesn't get is that sharing mp3s is not really illegal. Those morons just say so, but if they can't get Napster and they didn't arrest us for copying tapes years ago, they don't have a case against us now. I think something is cool, I share it. It is just like inviting those people over to my house and playing the music for them, or letting a friend borrow my CD. The RIAA just has to face the fact that life is tough and we don't need them anymore. I will go to the concerts of the bands I like and they will get their money...and if they sold a CD for a reasonable price, I would certainly support them that way. I am not scared at all...download my mp3s!!!! Bigredlinux

  8. More of the same crap on Windows Whistler Screenshots · · Score: 1

When I look at these screen shots, I cry really...cry at how sad Microsoft has become. Yes, we can all lacerate Microsoft for making our lives hell with the endless restarts, crashes and system failures...but what is worse than anything else is that you would expect that a company with as much money as Microsoft would actually IMPROVE on their product instead of making it worse. In the world we live in today, one good product only gets you to the top...and to stay there, you have to keep improving (take Linux for a great example). Going back to my point, win95, although by today's standards really doesn't cut it, was at least a sufficiently efficient operating systems, whose interface was based on what mattered, and not what didn't. Then Microsoft hired win98 to crash everyones computer and winNT just didn't function in a broad enough range to satisfy the average user. Enter win2K and winme. Win2k is definitely an improvement in stability and speed, but still things that worked on previous operating systems of Microsoft still don't work on win2k. And winMe is just a damn joke. I think one of the reason Microsoft is pushing for Whistler is because they realized early on how horrible winme is. Let me say it once and I need not say anything else about it beyond this statement. WINME IS A RESOURCE HOG AND IS NOT A VIABLE CHOICE FOR AN OPERATING SYSTEM, NO MATTER HOW COMPUTER INEPT YOU ARE!! Thank you. Quick comment about Linux...isn't it nice that when a new kernel comes out, your programs and hardware still works...Just a though. Thanks for reading!
