  1. Re:For all the PostgreSQL zealots out there... on MySQL 5.0.0 (Alpha) Released · · Score: 1

It sounds from the length of the brutal attack on Postgres that people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Pissing on your own doorstep eh? You complain about 'zealots' yet you yourself sound like you should join Ossama and his mates and go blow up the Postgres head developer!

As a professional consultant who has deploy lots and lots and lots of enterprise, small and medium stuff (think FT.com, O2, Vodafone, Schroders, etc etc) and having ran a consultancy the key factors in choosing a database are

    1) Support - how many people know it and if it breaks can it be fixed in a cost effective and fast manner?
    2) Reliability - does it go down and can we mitigate the risks with clustering?
    3) DR - can a backup be easily restored?
    4) Cost of both dev and licenses.
    5) Does it meet our architectural needs? For example at one of my major clients we had a realtime billing system for SMS's. It had a high volume of data flowing from table to table. The original system had no stored procedures and took ages - like 35 hours for a days data. We re-wrote in stored procs and it flew - 600% speed increase. Could we do this with MySQL? NO!!!!!!

I don't choose db's for my customers just because I'm a zealot. Some implementations use Oracle, some Postgres, some MySQL, some Sybase ASE.

If the people on Slashdot who scream and shout utter rubbish actually thought of requirements I wouldn't keep turning up to customers who had inadequate, poorly maintained systems designed by schoolkids.

Get a grip. Think of the factors, risks and choose the implementation on that. Don't dive in thinking 'I only know mysql and everything else must suck' - do some research, draw up plans, ask friends and get in some consultants.

  2. Guns on An Unbiased Analysis of Gun Crime vs. Gun Control? · · Score: 1

I'm from Northern Ireland and we have an interesting slant on gun laws. If you allowed people to freely have firearms there would be a guaranteed civil war. The fact you have to be connected to get the guns stops the majority of crimes (rather go to the pub than have all that hassle). The fact is that if you can't trust your citizens to be responsible, banning guns is the only option.

Also in Britain we have enough bills to pay, without having to fork out for a firearm, thank you. If the Americans used the money they wasted on firearms to create more youth clubs and the like in dodgy areas, maybe less kids would get into gun crime.

Also, why why why, do Americans always try to reduce the liberties of other countries, whilst extend their own. Take Iraq for example, surely under 'American Logic' if every country had nuclear weapons, nobody would fire them?

  3. I graduated recently..... on Perception of Linux Among IT Undergrads · · Score: 2, Interesting

I graduated with a CompSci degree in 2000 at UKC in Kent, UK. When I first arrived we were taught UNIX skills such as vi etc. However the year that arrived after us were taught NT! UKC is a really UNIXy UK university and some idiot thought it good to get rid of it for the undergrads.... doh! We formed a protest group as 3rd years, we got a petition and forced the uni to teach UNIX. Now a year later they are glad they took our advice.

Advocacy is an interesting thing, funny at my home (office) I'll openly admit to using XP on my desk, why not ? Its pretty good for a MS OS and I want to get work done in an interchangible format without spending a whole load of time messing around. You see you can all argue till the sun sets, but the fact is some of us don't have time to piddle around or argue for that fact!
As for UNIX boxes, well I love 'em to bits, and if Linux had a good office package I'd use it rather than XP. I have a Netra T1 AC105 with Solaris and 5 Linux boxes, so don't say I don't know my stuff.

As for graduates being dumb blah blah, well everyone does IT for different reasons and thats their choice. All I find in this industry is a pack of 'I'm a guru know-alls' who actually know squat. Why don't IT consultants act more professionally, keep their mouths shut at the relevant times and help people rather than blow their own trumpets?

Another one is incompetance, how many other industries can important records be blown away by a keystroke, with some kiddy saying 'we don't need a backup strategy as modern computers are reliable' ?

Finally, I don't know everything, but I sure as hell am willing to learn and show others.

One of the reasons I never post on Slashdot is because I am too busy, hell a lot of you guru's are either a) On benefit b) wasters - if you have time to argue all this stuff online!

  4. TFT's are now awesome on Making LCD Displays Snappier · · Score: 1

Just got my hands on a new Sony M61 DVI TFT, sitting alongside my Vision Master Pro410 CRT. Lets just say that under all circumstances (games as well) the sony TFT is a million times better - its clearer, perfect colour matching (DVI works a treat) and perfect geometry. For the money (£500) this Sony is smashing. All those people who think TFT sucks, just keep thinking that way, I'm going to buy shares in an opticians ASAP!

  5. It rocks on Tiger MP Dual-Processor Motherboard · · Score: 1

I got one 2 weeks ago.... 2 x 1.2 palamino Athlons and 1/2 gig Ram..... its soo fast its hard to believe! Insight.com in the UK have some coming in every month - they trickle in so you have to be lucky to get one.

Great board... needs big fans, using 2 huge silver mountains to cool the CPU's, and a coolermaster 210 case.

Only problems I have had so far is the Wake-up-on-lan and the APM shutdown, I can't for the life of me get my WOL working, when it worked fine on my old ASUS, also the machine will not APM shutdown when I go shutdown -h now (doesnt work in wintendo either) Any ideas?

2.4.10 fixes AGP Gart problems with it too, also the board does not set the MTRR's on both CPU's for some reason?????

great board though - no other problems and rock solid, never crashes or has an problems.
