  1. Multi processors == Multi monitors? on ATI Introduces a Parallel Processing Video Card · · Score: 1

Is it possible to have ATI add multi monitor support by creating a special VGA connector card? Or is this architecturally not possible? Also, is this card backwards compatible with all the ATI drivers for XFree86? Or do new drivers have to be written? Do new applications have to be partially re-written to take advantage of the multiple processors (like SMP on linux, where the OS had to be written with SMP support)?

  2. Re:This might be of interest... on FTP Client Recommendations? · · Score: 1

I tried gFTP for awhile. It's pretty neat, but a little annoying. It tries to connect to an FTP server multiple times so you can download many things at the same time. I couldn't find out any way to disable this, and my friend got annoyed when I was all three users out of a total of three allowed (not to mention sucking up all his bandwith). So I switched to ncftp, which is pretty good since it can do batch downloads as well as delayed downloads (you can set the time and date for something to download). I tried doing this type of delayed download by downloading a directory, but it didn't seem to work. Maybe I just used the wrong syntax.

  3. STAR WARS and NASA on NASA show off new 'Star Wars' type PDA · · Score: 1

Whenever I hear NASA and Star Wars together, I can't help but think of the STAR WARS SDI program. When I first read the headline, I thought that there would be some kind of PDA which controlled the STAR WARS satellites. Strange thought, but consider the fact that they're reconsidering the SDI program, it's not something beyond reality I think...

  5. Re:it's not a technical battle on RIAA Plans to Allow Portable MP3 Players · · Score: 1

If they are doing this, then why do they make all of the already-make mp3s legal? The way I see it, this makes it legal for all existing cds to be ripped and encoded for anyone to use legally. All of the existing music albums on the market would be fair game, and they might as well get rid of the existing music in music stores, as it can all be aquired for free with no royalty.

  6. Mass of universe? on Age of Universe Derived · · Score: 1

So if when the radius of the universe increases by a factor of two, the total area of the universe increases by a factor of 4, what is the mass of the universe? Can we calculate this?

  7. MP3 format breaks into untapped market on RIAA Plans to Allow Portable MP3 Players · · Score: 2

I believe that the main thing we have to consider here is that the MP3 format has awoken a new market -- the market of "geeky" computer users. People who are using a flavor of unix are used to getting many utilities and software for free -- where the stuff the use everyday is produced by a group of people writing software for the better-ment of the entire society of computer users. By tapping into this market, they've effectively unleashed the "GNU" spirit. In the world that we live in today, there are companies that write write software for profit, and in the same way, everyone in the music industry would love to make more money on their goods.

The music industry is in a way like Microsoft -- they've been doing something all along to make money, and it's always worked for them. Then, with the increasing popularity of the internet, they are facing competition with all these new faces of technology. Both the music industry and companies like Microsoft are having their goods pirated. Also, they both are facing the challenge of competing with free music: The music industry has to compete with new smaller music groups whom the music industry's publishers had not even considered publishing. Microsoft must contend with the free software available, such as Linux.

It seems as if the internet is filled with people with a view of "the greater good" in mind. Almost like Marxist philosophies, these people believe in the equality of all people, and idealize everything.

The music industry also fails to see the advantages of the MP3 format -- if I hear a song I like, I go and buy the CD, because it is true that an author should recieve whatever credit or royalties they want for a product. The biggest problem for the music industry with the MP3 format is that fact that soon bands and music groups will be able to circumvent the music recording industry and be able to sell directly to consumers, avoiding the middle men. The direction of the capitalist market today seems to be moving away from a "middle man" type price barrier -- I believe that it is only a matter of time before the recording industry dissapears into oblivion, being only a necessity of the past. After all, direct consumer sales is the product of the internet, is it not? Just look how well amazon.com is doing...

  8. US Patent Office has problems. on Patent Attempt on some forms of Dynamic Web Posting · · Score: 1

The US Patent Office has recently granted more and more "bad" patents. It seems that the people working for the US government in this department either doesn't know what they're doing, or don't care about their job. The patent office really needs to get some technologically savvy workers in order to evaluate a patent. These shouldn't be hard to find, as so many of the people that post replies on /. seem able to determine the workability of a patent. I'm not sure what problem the US patent office has, but it's pretty bad and getting worse.

Unfortunantely, X11R6 doesn't currently support multiple monitors (natively). Supposedly version 4.0 will have multi-headed support (See their web site at http://www.xfree86.org), but until then you'll have to wait. The only other alternative is to purchase the MetroX server, which supports multiple displays on Matrox Millenias ONLY.

  14. Windows and MMD on BeOS, Win95 and Dual Video Cards · · Score: 1

I believe there's a text file somewhere on the windows 98 cd detailing exactly which cards are supported as a secondary monitor. You need to have one of those graphics cards listed in the the text file to be the secondary monitor, though you can select any graphics card to be the primary display.

Note that Windows 95 does NOT support multiple display devices (I believe that Number Nine has written a MMI hack for Windows NT to run multiple of the same display devices), you NEED Windows 98. Also note that if you have a tv input thing on your graphics card, it will not work if it is setup as secondary monitor.

The card which is first detected will be primary monitor. PCI is always detected before AGP, so be careful to account for that if you need to purchase a new card. Otherwise you can simply exchange the physical locations of the graphics cards to change the detection order.
