This is a great concept--but you are only applying it halfway. You've either got to do the whole thing, or none at all. For instance, how do you think MS got to the point it is? A lot of it was through patents (gov't intervention), copyrights (gov't intervention) and licensing (contract law is more gov't intervention).

Microsoft is benefitting from governmental (which is to say "societal") institutions such as the above, therefore it has to be good back to us. If it doesn't we retaliate (through anti-trust lawsuits, etc). You can't deplore anti-Microsoft action while ignoring pro-Microsoft action.

  5. Could someone explain to me... on CueCat At It Again · · Score: 1

...why I would want a cuecat? I mean, a barcode doesn't encode some "universal" information, does it? It's just a lookup into a table that the scanner is presumably hooked up to, right? In this case, it converts to a URL, but only if you use DC's service....so the cuecat is useless unless you use the service? And if I'm not interested in their service, why would I be interested in the cuecat?

  6. Re:What am I missing here? on X11R6.4 And Apache On Mac OS X Beta · · Score: 1

    Let's extend the example:

Photoshop is installed on Mac #1. You want to display on Mac #2. If you are running something compat with X, you can launch Photoshop on Mac #1 (i.e. running on Mac #1's CPU, using Mac #1's RAM, etc) but have the input/output on Mac #2. Mac #2 needs little or no CPU power, because al the actual work is done on #1.

AFAIK, only X supports this fully. PCAnywhere and VNC are addons to give partial functionality. Windows Terminal Server does some of it (I don't know how much) but I haven't heard anything about that software in over a year.

  7. Re:"If" on IOC Clamps Down on Athlete Web Diaries · · Score: 1

In the early part of the 20th Century many (most? all?) restaurants in the American South had signs saying "No Coloreds". So a black entering such an establishment who subsequently got ejected, beaten and/or killed was really the one to blame, according to your logic. After all, the rules were plainly posted.

And don't give me a bunch of BS about "how can you compare online diaries to rampant racism" or other such nonsense. I'm not equating the two--I'm pointing out that fairness and legality are not synonymous by use of an extreme example. Your task is to show how the IOCs rules are both legal AND fair. "The Olympians don't have to play if they don't like it" isn't much of a response considering it is the only chance for many of them and the IOC has a monopoly.

"If you own the event, you get to set the terms on which people attend your event."

"If", indeed. Does the IOC "own" the Olympics? If your answer is "yes", please indicate what it means to "own" a sporting event.

Let's use a baseball game as an example. As we all know, "rebroadcast without the express written permission of Major League Baseball" is not allowed. But if I attended the game, can I make a webpage that gives a general outline of the game. Sure! I'm not "rebroadcasting" anything--I'm reporting (in my own words) on an event. You can run an event but you can't own the rights to tell people about it.

"If this didn't happen, we wouldn't have big sporting events."

That must be why the ancient Greeks never held any Olympics.

  9. Why Linux? on Ask John Gildred About Indrema And Linux Gaming · · Score: 4

Linux is great for server, development and even many desktops and I use it both at work and at home exclusively. HOWEVER, Linux is missing (or semi-missing) several pieces to make it an excellent gaming platform: easy to install/configure high-end graphics and, of course, DVD. From the Linux community's point of view, it's great that Indrema will be pushing to better these--but what is the advantage from the Indrema point of view? What possible advantages could Linux have that would make you overlook the glaring flaws that Linux has as a gaming platform?

  12. Re:never read the series but.. on The Truth · · Score: 2

Pratchett is Adams-ish only in that they are both quintessentially British Humour Writers. However, Adams is more absurd whereas Pratchett is more satirical. If you are an American then liking one (or Monty Python, if you haven't read either) pretty much guarantees you'll like the other.

Start with the one that has the earliest copyright date you can find. It'll probably be higher quality AND it won't have so many in-jokes.

  13. 9/10? on The Truth · · Score: 2

"The Truth" is definitely the best of the last, say, 3 Pratchett books ("The Fifth Elephant" was just plain awful--I almost swore off Pratchett entirely), but I wouldn't give it 9/10. Compare it to classic Terry: "Mort", "Small Gods", "Equal Rites", etc. Now THOSE are 9/10. TT is maybe 7/10.

If Terry intends to continue this series (and he shows no signs of slowing down) he needs to do a few things:

    1) Re-read all of his existing books. This will remind him what a good book looks like AND it will refresh his memory on all the now-tired devices he's so-overused ("...through X and out the other side...", for instance).
    2) Do something completely new with the series. Write a story set in a completely different area. Don't use existing characters--they have become cardboard cutouts of themselves (with the possible exception of Vetinari and Carrot). This includes CMOT Dibbler, unless it's VERY subtle.
    3) Screw continuity. There's no way to reconcile many of the events that have already occurred anyway. Off-hand comments in previous books are putting more and more absurd requirements on new books (cf trolls thinking better in cold air).

Of course, if he is going to leave the Known Disc behind and scrap continuity, it might just be easier to write a book NOT in the series...
