A relative of mine has a filtration business. They sell industrial filtration machines that are superior to all others. They patented the machines and the process. They had to hire a few patent lawyers to register the patents oversea as well.
My relatives patents are the only thing which defend him from rich, established companies. When they attempt to use his methods, he takes 'em to court. If he didn't, the huge companies would be able to undersell him until he went under. If he didn't patent the method he developed, he would be working for one of the companies, instead of having his own company today.
Patents protect the weak as well as the powerful. While my relative could have rolled over and made his patent available to everyone, and not gotten a cent for the years he spent developing his ideas, he prefered to be able to control and develop the idea that he created. If he had not chosen to patent his idea, someone else would have taken the work he did and used it for their own profit.
Open source does not cover: food, lodging, computer, utilities, car, entertainment; UNLESS these are shared as well, and not hoarded by a few, then open source is a pipe dream.
Mr. Mundie cleared up the issues surrounding the open source movement. I, for one, will now abandon all of these free software schemes that could trick me into using software without paying for it. If the company only makes money through supporting the software, there is obviously something very wrong with the software-- they must have built in bugs so that people will have to pay the company for support.. ohh, wait, umm, microsoft already charges 300$ a question... umm.
Maybe the GPL is bad because, well, it will break down the corporate power structure that we have been building for so many years. Complex mathematical calculations can be broken up into many different processor routines. I know the fortran programs my father writes to analyse spin/ other NMR data would take 200-300 days to run on a 600 mhz pIII with 256 megs ram. He just adds some MPIS commands into the program to tell the supercomputer how to break up the processes among the processors (haha -- ). This reduces the time from 100's of days to a number of hours on 128 processors (which he receives use of under a grant).

His article on the edge addresses software brittleness: were if one part of the software is "Broken" the whole package will not run. Until we have supercomputers that have 3 copies of the same process running at the same time (One 10000 ticks ahead, one running normal, one in standby with backup data) there will be issues with software crashes. One bit off can accumulate exponentially in just a few 100 clock cycles (if it is part of the code- data does not matter (ohh no I got a b instead of a c in my word doc!@!)).
If we had a process (graphics process, etc.) running a couple 1000 ticks ahead, we would know when a command we have executed put the smackdown on our computer, and be able to stop the command or bad bit before it hit. This would be possible if we were running Ole' Skool 8088/8086 XT style processes with an OS that monitored the processes with a couple of processes in predict mode- but people prefer to develop newer glitzier packages with more features to utilize all computing power, than using computing power to have backup processes running, and sacrifice a little glamour.
In 15 years, moores law says we get 1024 X the computing power we have now. If someone sacrifices 4X power from apps to OS backup processes, we still get 256 X speed. Interesting to see if there is a split between people pursuing blind speed/good looks and people pursuing stability in platforms. (Sorta the same old argument everyone always has: Stability vs. Kickassatility? Me want Staykickassatility!).
He seemed to have something against open source programmings lack of standards. I believe Lanier would like a specific programming language standard set, so that all code could be created in a uniform manner (All code being written in C++ for example). His desire seems to be for an overlanguage that sums up the abilities of all of the other languages out there (java/C++/Fortran/HTML...) in an artistic poetic way(he did say literature:).
Another thing I noticed about the writing on the Edge (http://www.edge.org I think) was a focus on the evolutionary aspect of software/ the global consciousness (internet connectivity)/ hardware. This lead me to believe he also desires people to specialize into certain fields of software design such as: graphics driver specialist, OS directory structure specialist, cool easter egg in excel that looks like spy hunter specialist....
We are supposed to break up software R&D the same way Science branched out into different areas (physics/chemistry-genetics/ biology).
Software could branch eventually - every branch of every field of thought becomes more specialized as time goes on.

Apparently Ball Semiconductor is the company making this product. What I had believed to be 3d modular architecture is a stand-alone product. The 3d sphere itself has the whole chip etched on it. Ball Semiconductor states that they can produce chips at a much higher rate .
This could all be propaganda. I am interested in the heat dissipation on these bad mamajamas though, so I emailed them to get some tech specs on how they deal with this.

Does anyone recall the company from Japan that is researching a high speed manufacturing process using spheres of silicon instead of waifers? Apparently they would each have specific functions and be stacked in a 3d matrix for connectivity. The product was ?microbead architecture? or something like that. If anyone could find information on this I would appreciate it.
Increase in production, combined with increase of chip speed= more chips we can use to design faster ways of producing faster chips. Sounds like natural log to me.

Something I have noticed about history/philosophy/natural philosophy literature: It is all just a new way of saying or doing the exact same thing.
Innovation, evolution of thought is spread through free exchange of ideas. The printing press was the equivalent of ball bearings. Now we have the internet (jiffy lube).

I don't see this new p2p software as a overuse issue for irc servers, people are already talking on them all the time:). I think the software must open up discussion groups named after the software or mp3 you are seeking (irc chat room Metalica - Battery:) with the info tag of the group containing the information of where to find your software/info. In the info part, there would be several addresses, such as 198.58.113.7... to the peer that has the software/info you requested. The client would than proceed to attempt connects at the addresses until it hit one that worked.
This is all speculation. It would be interesting to see how it actually works. (It could work by continually posting address's in the discussion room from people with the ware/softwares computer, overuse of the ircs I guess)
It is shady to use someone elses server to steal warez/music though - Even from people who encourage theivery among youth with their music (like Dr.Dre).
Liberals spend most of their time attempting to fix problems in society. Conservatives spend most of their time preventing problems from being fixed. Liberal means tolerant of the ideas and behaviors of others. Tolerance of someones desire to use another person for their own benefit- well they only ruin that persons and the life of those in their community, so I guess its allright ot deal drugs, in a broad minded sorta way (I mean, pain and poverty are all relative right?- who cares if a major portion of your community(Barrio) is addicted to drugs. It's not their fault, it is because they were not born into a rich family! They have to deal drugs to get to the top- no matter what!!! The drugs are just a way of using other peoples lives to get a step up into the better world!!
Poverty in the barrio is maintained by lack of education, by people selling drugs instead of creating products that will bring money into the barrio so the barrio cannot afford to increase the quality of its schools. IF leaders in the community would work together to create better lives for those who come after them, instead of taking the shortcut to power (dealing), the barrios problems would disappear. It is not only dealing, it is crimes such as robbery and burglary that create problems for the citizens who try to make a change.

What people have learned through the years is you get what you put in. You create a "hell" around yourself by using people, by providing them a quick illusary solution to their problems (poverty, crime, lack of education). You create a "heaven" around yourself by teaching and creating products that help the lives of those you live around. (note- Some religions warn against creating a heaven on earth (Christianity is one), I am merely using the terms heaven and hell to describe the life people create around themselves)

Crack is more psychologically addictive and damaging to users than powder. How do I know? I used to live with a bunch of heroin addicts in Pittsburgh. The thing was, my boss was one of them. He got involved with this one guy to get cheaper heroin. The guy muscled in on his business and forced him to use all of these crackheads who owed the dealer money. I worked with a bunch of wiggin' out crack heads, many of whom had killed a few people because they just get pissed off (you ever hang out with crackheads?). These people would bum money off my boss, make up some sorry ass excuse that they had to pay a bill, and then they were gone the rest of the day. This didn't happen to many times. (They all justified it because he was a junkie, so he was using up the profits on getting high too-- excellent logic ).
The friend of mine I refered to is the head of communications for the black caucus at my university. He grew up in north philly, in the projects. He has stories to tell, as do I. I have ran down to The Block in Baltimore to score drugs for people (myself included). I have been incarcerated in Texas and Pennsylvania (luckily not for about 5 years now, not that I ever did anything wrong- it was all BS, a bunch of evil cops- yah right... I know what I did). I grew up in a suburban white family- we had our problems- I ran away from home and bummed around Seattle for a bit. I have lived on the streets where you can't wear Raiders paraphenalia/ Bulls stuff/ and whatever.
Basing your arguments on "You don't know shit" does not work. You can say that all day. While I agree that poverty is a problem in ghettos, the cure is hard work by the people. An interesting thing I noticed about the scientific and business communities is that despite differences, when push comes to shove, the main drive is creating a better product, a better life for everyone. When you sell someone drugs that only cause them to want more, the person no longer cares about consequences or community, they will do what they have to to get drugs. This almost always harms their community, making other people seek the easy way out (drugs).
Drug dealers use other people with no regard to their community. Their philosophy is opposite of the philosophy of modern business. They see life as the one who takes the most wins . In mainstream society, the one who Produces the best product wins (note- this benefits everyone in the society, not just an individual; this also does not destroy lives, as drug addiction does; so, the net effects of dealing drugs are negative to all in a radius of effect- they decrease productivity, increase criminal activity which uses up the productivity of those who actually are trying to improve the barrio; the net effects of working hard too improve the barrio are- more produced, more to trade with outside world (we call that income, money), more to invest in the barrios productivity (into education, housing, etc.);
Unfortunately for some people, this is a Free society. You only get what you put in, so if all you do is take, those around you end up with less (this creates the poverty in the barrio). If you start out with nothing, it is harder to get ahead. This means you must be productive to improve your community. You do not make the world a better place by taking from those who have more than you(they have more than others because they PRODUCE!). You must become productive.
Drugs are not the root of all evil, it is the people who sell them and destroy the lives of their communities that are close to the root of evil (I said close too, it is actually the thought that the only way to succeed is to TAKE that is the root of all evil, this is why the barrio is the way it is, and the rest of the country seem to have so much more (They do, they are making the stuff!!!).
Work hard, get a job, teach people in your neighborhood the only way to improve your neighborhood is to produce, not to take.
Or formulate a well stated argument without statements like "You are a white guy, right?" followed by the statement "racial profiling by cops".
The problem is lack of jobs? Jobs are produced, not taken. Someone who has the time to sit on a corner all day dealing drugs, has the time to work at a McDonalds until they can afford to start a business or go to school. At least than they are Producing .
Dealers take from communities. Cops are societies immune system. They are not always right, but when a criminal is busted, it is good for society . Racial profiling happens to some extent- mainly cops act on the way people dress (imagine that). It is the assumption of some people, if you dress or act some way, then you have a certain set of beliefs--If a cop sees someone in nice clothes in a poverty stricken neighborhood, they are suspicious and rightfully so. Do you think it is some big producer coming into the neighborhood, or the source of the neighborhoods poverty? Some dealers might not realize what they are doing is hurting people, and they might help out their families and friends with the money they have taken from other areas of the community. No, it is not the drugs that are evil, and the consumers do not help (they can't help themselves- they can see what is happening to their life, and the lives of other users- yet they still don't stop!), but in the end it is the asshole who sells the drugs to gain power and money who is responsible for the ruin of many lives. The dealer is evil because the lives the dealer ruins affect the lives of everyone.
I could say 'drugs don't ruin the lives of the people I know'- all of the middle class yuppie kids who already have a lot to be happy about. We have enough to get by on and have a good time: cars, TVs, stereos, homes and food. Those with less than us are always looking for a quick step up out of the pain, a way to feel better, a shortcut- this applies to the dealer (using other people, destroying their lives) and the potential user. The control of Capital (money/energy) is concentrated at the top because large project could not be carried out if the capital was evenly divided among all members of society (communism would never work). Everyone is free to create something that benefits the society and rise to the top, but this requires capital to do and thus we rely upon those who came before (unless it is a brand new field, in which case it is much easier to enter into and excel).
Merchants/businessmen- Facilitate the transfer of material ($ is the measure of material/energy) and control the flow of material to vital parts of the economy (Research, Farming, Utilities, Entertainment) thus they control larger portions of capital out of necessity; Entrepreneurs - Create or enter a new market segment, usually with the backing of Merchants/Businessmen

Complex mathematical calculations can be broken up into many different processor routines. I know the fortran programs my father writes to analyse spin/ other NMR data would take 200-300 days to run on a 600 mhz pIII with 256 megs ram. He just adds some MPIS commands into the program to tell the supercomputer how to break up the processes among the processors (haha -- ). This reduces the time from 100's of days to a number of hours on 128 processors (which he receives use of under a grant).
If someone claims not to have an opinion on something, they are lying. If someone does not display their opinion it is because if they do they will loose their power to influence others (the people stupid enough to believe that the person does not use the law to enforce their opinion (even if their opinion appears to be the supremacy of the law- its not unless the judge/lawyer is altruistic, therefore deceiving themselve)).

When computer games take off and have as much respect as pro Basketball/Baseball/Football, and as much entertainment value, people will hire you to play on their team, to play in their online stadium, simply because you are the best. Jaron has issues with the fact that most software has problems building upon old source (like when you scan your memory in NT4.0 service pack 5 you find: MS-DOS 5.00...) without improving the source.
His article on the edge addresses software brittleness: were if one part of the software is "Broken" the whole package will not run. Until we have supercomputers that have 3 copies of the same process running at the same time (One 10000 ticks ahead, one running normal, one in standby with backup data) there will be issues with software crashes. One bit off can accumulate exponentially in just a few 100 clock cycles (if it is part of the code- data does not matter (ohh no I got a b instead of a c in my word doc!@!)).
If we had a process (graphics process, etc.) running a couple 1000 ticks ahead, we would know when a command we have executed put the smackdown on our computer, and be able to stop the command or bad bit before it hit. This would be possible if we were running Ole' Skool 8088/8086 XT style processes with an OS that monitored the processes with a couple of processes in predict mode- but people prefer to develop newer glitzier packages with more features to utilize all computing power, than using computing power to have backup processes running, and sacrifice a little glamour.
In 15 years, moores law says we get 1024 X the computing power we have now. If someone sacrifices 4X power from apps to OS backup processes, we still get 256 X speed. Interesting to see if there is a split between people pursuing blind speed/good looks and people pursuing stability in platforms. (Sorta the same old argument everyone always has: Stability vs. Kickassatility? Me want Staykickassatility!).

Another thing I noticed about the writing on the Edge (http://www.edge.org I think) was a focus on the evolutionary aspect of software/ the global consciousness (internet connectivity)/ hardware. This lead me to believe he also desires people to specialize into certain fields of software design such as: graphics driver specialist, OS directory structure specialist, cool easter egg in excel that looks like spy hunter specialist....
We are supposed to break up software R&D the same way Science branched out into different areas (physics/chemistry-genetics/ biology).
Software could branch eventually - every branch of every field of thought becomes more specialized as time goes on.
Apparently Ball Semiconductor is the company making this product. What I had believed to be 3d modular architecture is a stand-alone product. The 3d sphere itself has the whole chip etched on it. Ball Semiconductor states that they can produce chips at a much higher rate .
This could all be propaganda. I am interested in the heat dissipation on these bad mamajamas though, so I emailed them to get some tech specs on how they deal with this.

Does anyone recall the company from Japan that is researching a high speed manufacturing process using spheres of silicon instead of waifers? Apparently they would each have specific functions and be stacked in a 3d matrix for connectivity. The product was ?microbead architecture? or something like that. If anyone could find information on this I would appreciate it.

I don't see this new p2p software as a overuse issue for irc servers, people are already talking on them all the time:). I think the software must open up discussion groups named after the software or mp3 you are seeking (irc chat room Metalica - Battery :) with the info tag of the group containing the information of where to find your software/info. In the info part, there would be several addresses, such as 198.58.113.7 ... to the peer that has the software/info you requested. The client would than proceed to attempt connects at the addresses until it hit one that worked.
This is all speculation. It would be interesting to see how it actually works. (It could work by continually posting address's in the discussion room from people with the ware/softwares computer, overuse of the ircs I guess)
It is shady to use someone elses server to steal warez/music though - Even from people who encourage theivery among youth with their music (like Dr.Dre).

Liberals spend most of their time attempting to fix problems in society. Conservatives spend most of their time preventing problems from being fixed. Liberal means tolerant of the ideas and behaviors of others. Tolerance of someones desire to use another person for their own benefit- well they only ruin that persons and the life of those in their community, so I guess its allright ot deal drugs, in a broad minded sorta way (I mean, pain and poverty are all relative right?- who cares if a major portion of your community(Barrio) is addicted to drugs. It's not their fault, it is because they were not born into a rich family! They have to deal drugs to get to the top- no matter what!!! The drugs are just a way of using other peoples lives to get a step up into the better world!!
Poverty in the barrio is maintained by lack of education, by people selling drugs instead of creating products that will bring money into the barrio so the barrio cannot afford to increase the quality of its schools. IF leaders in the community would work together to create better lives for those who come after them, instead of taking the shortcut to power (dealing), the barrios problems would disappear. It is not only dealing, it is crimes such as robbery and burglary that create problems for the citizens who try to make a change.

What people have learned through the years is you get what you put in. You create a "hell" around yourself by using people, by providing them a quick illusary solution to their problems (poverty, crime, lack of education). You create a "heaven" around yourself by teaching and creating products that help the lives of those you live around. (note- Some religions warn against creating a heaven on earth (Christianity is one), I am merely using the terms heaven and hell to describe the life people create around themselves)

Crack is more psychologically addictive and damaging to users than powder. How do I know? I used to live with a bunch of heroin addicts in Pittsburgh. The thing was, my boss was one of them. He got involved with this one guy to get cheaper heroin. The guy muscled in on his business and forced him to use all of these crackheads who owed the dealer money. I worked with a bunch of wiggin' out crack heads, many of whom had killed a few people because they just get pissed off (you ever hang out with crackheads?). These people would bum money off my boss, make up some sorry ass excuse that they had to pay a bill, and then they were gone the rest of the day. This didn't happen to many times. (They all justified it because he was a junkie, so he was using up the profits on getting high too-- excellent logic ).
The friend of mine I refered to is the head of communications for the black caucus at my university. He grew up in north philly, in the projects. He has stories to tell, as do I. I have ran down to The Block in Baltimore to score drugs for people (myself included). I have been incarcerated in Texas and Pennsylvania (luckily not for about 5 years now, not that I ever did anything wrong- it was all BS, a bunch of evil cops- yah right... I know what I did). I grew up in a suburban white family- we had our problems- I ran away from home and bummed around Seattle for a bit. I have lived on the streets where you can't wear Raiders paraphenalia/ Bulls stuff/ and whatever.
Basing your arguments on "You don't know shit" does not work. You can say that all day. While I agree that poverty is a problem in ghettos, the cure is hard work by the people. An interesting thing I noticed about the scientific and business communities is that despite differences, when push comes to shove, the main drive is creating a better product, a better life for everyone. When you sell someone drugs that only cause them to want more, the person no longer cares about consequences or community, they will do what they have to to get drugs. This almost always harms their community, making other people seek the easy way out (drugs).
Drug dealers use other people with no regard to their community. Their philosophy is opposite of the philosophy of modern business. They see life as the one who takes the most wins . In mainstream society, the one who Produces the best product wins (note- this benefits everyone in the society, not just an individual; this also does not destroy lives, as drug addiction does; so, the net effects of dealing drugs are negative to all in a radius of effect- they decrease productivity, increase criminal activity which uses up the productivity of those who actually are trying to improve the barrio; the net effects of working hard too improve the barrio are- more produced, more to trade with outside world (we call that income, money), more to invest in the barrios productivity (into education, housing, etc.);
Unfortunately for some people, this is a Free society. You only get what you put in, so if all you do is take, those around you end up with less (this creates the poverty in the barrio). If you start out with nothing, it is harder to get ahead. This means you must be productive to improve your community. You do not make the world a better place by taking from those who have more than you(they have more than others because they PRODUCE!). You must become productive.
Drugs are not the root of all evil, it is the people who sell them and destroy the lives of their communities that are close to the root of evil (I said close too, it is actually the thought that the only way to succeed is to TAKE that is the root of all evil, this is why the barrio is the way it is, and the rest of the country seem to have so much more (They do, they are making the stuff!!!).
Work hard, get a job, teach people in your neighborhood the only way to improve your neighborhood is to produce, not to take.

The problem is lack of jobs? Jobs are produced, not taken. Someone who has the time to sit on a corner all day dealing drugs, has the time to work at a McDonalds until they can afford to start a business or go to school. At least than they are Producing .
Dealers take from communities. Cops are societies immune system. They are not always right, but when a criminal is busted, it is good for society . Racial profiling happens to some extent- mainly cops act on the way people dress (imagine that). It is the assumption of some people, if you dress or act some way, then you have a certain set of beliefs--If a cop sees someone in nice clothes in a poverty stricken neighborhood, they are suspicious and rightfully so. Do you think it is some big producer coming into the neighborhood, or the source of the neighborhoods poverty? Look at dictatorships- the leader lives in luxury while the rest just produce for the leader and live in squallor. That is the ghetto.
Some dealers might not realize what they are doing is hurting people, and they might help out their families and friends with the money they have taken from other areas of the community. They still are not creating something for their community, they are just taking what little money there is from one part, to another. Dealers just do not produce.

Your opinion that drug dealers do not harm anyone is incorrect- people who could have been productive are ruined through exploitation of their weakness. They provide a temporary illusary benefit to the user, while destroying the users potential. If you create an addict and do not believe you are evil, you are a fool or a liar.

Most teenagers are mature enough that they would not overindulge in illegal substances (Maybe my high-school wasn't the norm- I grew up in a rich suburban area where all of the kids messed with coke/pot/heroin/LSD- this was 10 yrs ago though). The dealer USES the consumer (they are your best friend- if you have money).
A few of my friends deal, or have in the past. The people who make them the most money are the hardcore cokeheads and junkies. These are people who lack self control and are taken advantage of by the dealer (who despises them as weak). True, a person who uses nicotene or other drugs is aware of the health risk, but the nature of the substance prevents them from attempting to quit. The users are no longer able to facilitate excess production for societies or their own use. This creates a Drag effect on society, parts of society that could be used for the benefit of all are being used and discarded for the benefit of 1 (the dealer).

(note- some people just dabble in pot dealing or sell a little coke here and there, and while they are not directly ruining the lives of people they are contributing to those higher up who are destroying lives, and could end up creating new consumers. So all those who dabble in drugs do have partial responsibility for the problems in the inner city. Where do you think people get the drugs they sell in high school, at bars, etc.(discounting shroom kits and homegrown)? But in the end, it is the dealer (even the lowly pot dealer who occasionally sells some coke for extra money) who is responsible for the lives ruined by drug abuse.)
It doesn't matter that the person wants the drug- they were introduced to it at some point by a dealer(through some route). Drugs create an illusion of a perfect life, while you are high. The problem is coming down. If the user spent the time and effort(money) they did getting high on improving their life, they would create a surplus for their community.

I recently talked to a friend of mine who grew up in north Philly. When he was a kid in the ghetto, the people he looked up to were the dealer's. They had a lot of money, the hot girls, the nicest clothing, the sweetest ride. Then he sold crack for a while and saw what it did to the users. Even new users would quickly get sucked into the world of burglary and strong-arm robbery. These people end up being a burden to the rest of society, for the power of one greedy individual (the dealer) in the ghetto. Why is it the ghetto? Why do people want to get out? Because the dealers kill, they corrupt the children of good people (they see the rich man, and they want to be like him- they sell drugs, they end up doing drugs, etc.). No, it is not the drugs that are evil, and the consumers do not help (they can't help themselves- they can see what is happening to their life, and the lives of other users- yet they still don't stop!), but in the end it is the asshole who sells the drugs to gain power and money who is responsible for the ruin of many lives. The dealer is evil because the lives the dealer ruins affect the lives of everyone.
I could say 'drugs don't ruin the lives of the people I know'- all of the middle class yuppie kids who already have a lot to be happy about. We have enough to get by on and have a good time: cars, TVs, stereos, homes and food. Those with less than us are always looking for a quick step up out of the pain, a way to feel better, a shortcut- this applies to the dealer (using other people, destroying their lives) and the potential user. Here comes Mr. Cokedealer seeing a new slave for his kingdom. I offer this young fool something that will make him feel like he is rich/on top of the world, and take his whole life which he is not wise enough to appreciate.
Hippies are happy people, parties are fun to crash, and drug use in moderation is enjoyable. This does not justify the dealer who uses other peoples desire for profit, while destroying their lives. If you use or sell drugs, somewhere along the chain you are most likely benefiting someone who uses other people with no regard for their well being (once again I am not refering to those of you who produce only for your own consumption and are productive, that is your own choice).
Serve in heaven- Go the long hard route: school, specialize in a trade, etc. Produce for society, do not ruin other peoples lives, leave the world a nicer place when you split . End up with a happy life, with the knowledge that you are not one of the scum who denies responsibility in ruining the lives of the weak willed, who with proper training could have benefited everyone.

Actually, in a FREE capitalist system, everyone benefits from everyone's ideas- so when you come up with a better method, the big guys emulate you- not because they are sharks, but because everyone is trying to provide the best possible service in the most efficient manner.
It is not about a smaller company providing a threat- the smaller company just provides a better service - in which case others emulate them, or they cannot match the larger companies quality of service(which includes the TRUST people have in established companies), so they die out. Simple as that.
The person who provides AND patents/protects the best product gains both personal benefits and the long term benefits of the effect of their product on society (Wintel/Slackintosh did make computers mainstream- which is good for society/freedom on information xchange, and made the CEO's rich).
An individual in a materialistic society uses others to create the greatest benefit for themself. Examples are crack dealers in the ghetto who destroy peoples lives but appear to be living large (drug dealers are the rot of society- they produce nothing and remove others ability to produce).
If you are a materialist you must make the old company appear shady(note: if the old company is shady, and does not emulate the new companies better practices, it will die out): A new company must prove the old company is worse- so the new company is the shark, not the old company.
An individual in a capitalistic society provides services/products to help the society grow and strengthen- Scientists/farmers/Wal-Mart employees/Bartenders etc. all benefit the society.
The control of Capital (money/energy) is concentrated at the top because large project could not be carried out if the capital was evenly divided among all members of society (communism would never work). Everyone is free to create something that benefits the society and rise to the top, but this requires capital to do and thus we rely upon those who came before (unless it is a brand new field, in which case it is much easier to enter into and excel).
Merchants/businessmen- Facilitate the transfer of material ($ is the measure of material/energy) and control the flow of material to vital parts of the economy (Research, Farming, Utilities, Entertainment) thus they control larger portions of capital out of necessity; Entrepreneurs - Create or enter a new market segment, usually with the backing of Merchants/Businessmen
