Same thing here in the Netherlands, cable modems are available for a few months and still in the process of getting connected. If you want one, you have to wait for at least a month. Good thing the boss thought we needed a T1:-)
Slightly, no, completely offtopic...but, as far as the government is concerned, the Netherlands strictly follow the USA. Aside from the "liberal" drugs-policies that made us "famous" or at least well-known, we're hard on our way to be Americanized, so to speak. The record companies over here are exactly the same companies as in the US ergo the battle is fought over there, not here. The media coverage over the last 6 months in the whole country about equals the number of Jon Katz articles the last week...
I have to assume from both your post and your sig that you think that the entire tech-world consists of coders... Are you a coder yourself and just unable to imagine anyone in a different line of business posting to Slashdot? Or was this an attempt at a joke?
But, daycare seems to work just fine for lots of kids
Excuse me? Did you look at the progress of the human race as a whole lately? You know, starvation, wars, religious disputes. Oh wait, we already did that before daycare kicked in. Oh well, go ahead, give your kids to KILLER NANNY.
Don't!!!!! It's crowded enough here as it is. We don't need shitloads of Americans walking around, stealing our jobs, smoking our pot, drinking our beer and sleeping with our women. Not to mention their incredibly intolerant behaviour to everything slightly different than themselves.
Note to moderators: if you don't get the concept "sarcasm", then this is indeed flamebait. Do your worst...
It's your choice: do you want to hear "You stink!" all of the time, or "Good job!"?
None of the above. The only thing words I want to hear my boss utter are "paycheck", "business trip at expense of company" and our all-time favorite "raise"...
Which is exavtly the reason you shouldn't keep those promises. Actually doing what you said you'd do will force you to come with an entirely new promise. And that's not all environmentally friendly. Campaign promises should be recycled as much as possible.
Holy shit! So every time I call the UK a "little poverty-stricken island" I'm right? That's the kind of money I make doing tech-support! Ever considered moving one country to the east? Your salary will double, the price of beer will be cut in half, the only problem is you'll have to learn the language, and that's not even necessary...
That's definitely not what I consider an I-Mac to be worth, considering the hardware I could get if I spent that same amount on parts to assemble my own box.
I boot up with an athlon 1ghz and 256 megs of ram into windows 98, and it lags to the point of a crawl
With all due respect, but this not indicate to speed of the Mac, but the fact that you did not "Tweak" Windows correctly. When I boot up my Celeron 450 with 64 MB Ram, WinMe takes less time to load than the Bios. The next time your Winblowz install slows to a crawl, you might want to take a look in HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run
All the crap in there is ran automatically at bootup, also all the crap you thought is uninstalled.
how, and if so when will I be able to port this to an affordable computer. This is not a Mac flame(tm), this is just a question from someone who does not want to shell out the amount of cash required to buy a Mac.

Really? I never could have guessed. Tell me, is the sarcasm staining your monitor?
You're either a troll or you have a Ph D in psychology. Anyway, you're telling us what we all know, the problem is applying it in practice...

That depends. If those magic words have "no more" in front of them...
At least you reply instead of modding me down:-)
Let me guess. They do that for about 30 hours a week?

Ok, a little more to the south, say about two countries...

Thou shalt not work for the government.
You wimp! Real men use Pen and paper(tm).
You probably wouldn't understand till you get to know one.
Real dedication to this kind of reserach would be marrying the Canadian math major...

I'd do it, if it were just for the monitor:-)
Anybody wanna place bets on what the next digit is going to be?
Sorry for the inconvenience?
That's exactly the amount of money I was not planning ot shell out...
