The key point is that they can check Outlook/Exchange emails for viruses, but they can't do that to webmail accounts.

Shouldn't we stop this whole naming charade? It seems pointless to argue who should be credited for putting together the Linux kernel and the GNU libraries, tools and GUIs, to create an operating system.

I say let RMS call it GNU/Linux, if he enjoys it so much. I reserve the right to use it without naming it. So there!

  4. Solution for RIAA on Philips Says Compact Discs Can't be Copyprotected · · Score: 3, Insightful

The solution for RIAA and major music labels is to push for another "standard" rather than CD (or CDDA). Simply create Extended Disc (ED) and market it it as such. Make this standard work just like the CDDA standard, but allow for copy protection-style errors. Big marketing campaign to support ED as being "better" than CD. Done!

If you had checked the openpkg website, you would have noticed they use the same concepts as RPM, but they do not require an installation of RPM to be present.

MacFixIt modified the 10.1 disk by turning off a package that was not optional - i.e. in the Apple release, the CheckOS package was required. As such, it is part of the software, regardless of the details of the packaging (DLL, or OS extension, or whatever).

  8. Freedom of speech is not everything... on Is The U.S. No Longer The Choice For Freedom? · · Score: 1
You take very lopsided views of safety and freedom - you seem mostly concerned with freedom of speech.

Generally, a government is supposed to provide:
    • physical safety (i.e. you will not be mugged by street thugs AND you will not be killed by people who do not like your ideas)
    • freedom (i.e. you can do whatever you want as long as you do not threaten somebody else's right to freedom or physical safety)
There is always a trade-off between the two.

Also, some believe that a government should provide for the well being (i.e. QoL) of its citizens. The above two rights (safety and freedom) usually provide the framework for each individual to find their level of happiness, the desired quality of life. Of course, it is rather complicated for every person to put in all the work to attain that quality of living - that is why the US has Social Security, for example. Other governments have a more extensive influence on their citizens - free health benefits for a larger income tax.

Now, back to the freedom issue: the majority of people (against which minorities take shape) have a lot of inertia, which reflects in the media. The media serves them by reinforcing their world outlook, and by shutting off the non-mainstream ideas. Is this good or bad? It is definitely bad for those banished to speak.

BTW, independent (as in "independent thinker") does not mean better or wiser.

How are you going to check for the validity of the keys? For example, if a doctor gets a message from a patient, how does the doctor know the patient sent the message, and not somebody else? Digital signatures *would* solve this if there was public key infrastructure to allow for verification and retrieval of public keys.

How do you meet your responsibility for spreading the word?

Respecting somebody does not put you in charge of "spreading the word". Believing in somebody (Stallman or anyone else) might require doing the missionary work. But respecting and believing are different. I respect Marc Andreesen, but I do not go around talking about him all the time...
