  1. Pursue some Government Grants? on Wanted - 45 Mile Wireless Broadband? · · Score: 1

I'm not familiar with the Canadian Government's Grant system, but I know the US has government grants ranging in millions of dollars to assist rural communities. Being an educational entity may also help in getting additional funding. Also, asking all the 'Industry' corporations wouldn't hurt as some of them might actually donate equipment and services to help communities. They loved those big tax write-offs, especially the chance to plaster their logos and trademarks all over the place.

  2. This should be interesting... on Farscape Signs for 2 More Years · · Score: 2, Interesting

It will really give a lot of the newer Science Fiction TV show a run for their money. I know at the beginning I was unimpressed with Farscape, but it has been developing, and the audience it has gained has acquired its taste. The Soap Opera-tic style combined with the comedic mannerisms really give the show a uniqueness that you don't really find in a lot of today's Science Fiction shows.

  3. Educational Environment on Cooperation in CS Education? · · Score: 1

I've always thought that there should two types of technical classes. Using CS as an example, there would be classes on algorithms, structures, etc.; and then there would be classes in the implementation of these concepts.

Most classes try to combine these, but I believe the conceptual part of the class need to be separate from the implementation part of the class, i.e. a lecture/recitation/lab separation.

What drives International Politics? If all you're concerned about what happens to your country, then you become isolated like Japan and China were for a time. The reason the US has so much support is because the US tries to help countries out (so long as it doesn't interfere with any other agendas -- i.e. power politics). The priority should be cooperation, not destruction. The only way the world will get better is with cooperation, not isolation (i.e. *nix vs. MS). We should try to show some civility being an industrially sophisticated Superpower...

Sure, let's get rid of the privacy issue and let the FBI use the information it gathers on us. Wait a second, the FBI is now releasing personal information to corporations. Don't worry about the added SPAM that is causing, it's normal. What are these cameras doing in my bedroom and bathroom? Oh well, I guess it's the government's doing, I won't worry about it. Hmmm, why is the video stream from these cameras being broadcast on prime time TV? What now? Oh, we can't have computers at home, ok, I can live with that, that will bring down terrorism. What, we have to live in outdoor tent camps? ok, just as long as we are safe from terrorists. Don't you just feel so much safer living in these caves with complete strangers? At least we're safe!

  7. Re:The Customer is always right on Code Red Refunds? · · Score: 1

Qwest is under no legal obligation to refund anything to it's customers, in this situation because the outages were caused by malicious acts out of their control. Since they don't filter packets, they aren't responsible for the content that goes over their networks. It would be like suing your customers because they didn't go shopping at your store due to severe weather.

"The Customer is always right." should be the underlying motto of any business' mission statement. However, even though the customer is right, they don't always know the best way to resolve the issue.

As a gesture of good business, I think Qwest should offer some sort of credit for future payments. If those customers that really want to get any lost revenue due to apparent outakes (not actual outages), then they should go after the incompetent system admins that didn't patch up the IISs.
