  1. Re:The scariest part is... on Scientists Find Evidence of Black Holes Sucking · · Score: 1

Why be scared by that? I find it frightening enough that apparently 99% of the population have bought into the idea that the year 2000 is the first year of the new decade/century/millenium, when it is actually the last year of the current decade/century/millenium.

  2. Re:I'm still picking up steam at 33 on Old Folks Can Code, Too · · Score: 1

Tell me about it; I just got into IT two years ago (I'm now 33 as well) after 7 years in arts administration (an international music festival). I feel like I have so much more to learn and offer an employer, but they probably won't want it.

Thank God I at least can still pass for 26; I may have to start lying about my age soon!

  3. Re:building it one year early, I see ;) on World's Biggest Roller Coaster · · Score: 1

The difference between counting the anniversaries of your birth and counting the current year is that birthdays count total years at the end of the completed year (1,2,3 years old) while New Year's Day 2000 will be the beginning of the last year of the second millenium A.D.

But, who cares? The media has trained the masses to believe that 2000 begins the new millenium, and anyone you try to convince otherwise will look upon you as some sort of crackpot.

As an IBMer, I was very pleased to see the stock price up by $20 per share following this announcement.

  5. Ground Troops Good, Identity Cleansing Bad on Fighting the Techno-War · · Score: 1

I agree with the statement that neither the bombings nor ground troops will work. This isn't like the Jews in Hitler's Germany in one way: these two peoples have been in conflict for centuries. I don't think that either bombs or troops will stop their hatred.

Not to say that I think we should sit by and allow genocide to take place; just that I don't see a course of action that will be effective.

  6. arrogance of the Linux community on RMS Immature, Slashdot and Community Arrogant? · · Score: 1

Arrogance? It's definitely out there (Here? I don't feel that I know Linux well enough to count myself as part of it yet.) Not a majority, but rude and smart-ass postings tend to make more of an impression than others. Combine that with the learning curve to understand a new OS, and a lot of people get turned off.

If you want Linux (or GNU/Linux, though I'm not going to go around saying it; takes too long!) to catch on beyond the techno-savvy set, be more understanding of the capabilities of the teeming masses. You shouldn't have to be a Comp Sci graduate to use a PC.
