I think it'll go like this:
DDos detectors send reports to central data pool, ISP's pay for acces to said pool (the bandwidth saved may be your own!!) ISP's terminate connections and ask questions later.
this way MC Crappy can charge for acess to the DDos Zombie list. any bets on if they'll provide this information for free?
Cable companies give you the link to the @home backbone, @home gives web access, mail, homepage, startpage, and a stupid browser skin...
Cable companies are doing fine, they'll just need to dump you out onto the web from somewhere else and find you a different email service. Personally, I think what they offered as a start page was revenue generating comercially driven trash. Sales pitches weaved into the headlines like they're something new and all that kind of lame stuff. I'm going to be glad to see them go. this will speed up the opening of cable networks and give options when you sign up for cable modem connnections.

I'm an old nintendohead, I got me a PS2 last week, it's good (I think Game Cube will be better), but it'll be better once I can boot a linux web-browsing terminal on my TV set. I predict having Linux compatability will become the norm and this will boost any console that can run Linux. This also means developers can develop games for Linux that run on consoles and PCs. Sorry MS, it's too late for you.
so if there's a distibuted client app that also allows for file sharing, everyone could download it and we'd all have supercomputers. I saw 40TB of content on LimeWire yesterday, granted it was mostly music and not scientific data. but after decoding a music stream and loading a webpage, what do you do with all those extra clockcycles anyhow? how about providing a globus interface in the major Linux Distros, so you could subscribe to the grid along with system updates and supoort options. sure it'd piss off my ISP but what the hell do I care?

no, I like free stuff, but I also want CHOICE. MS has the ability to raise the bar for anyone wanting to enter the browser market. Or any other market for that matter by investing tons of cash and taking a loss which is how they destroy competition. The Browser is the least of my concerns, it's more the way that they design tools that will only work with other MS tools although standards they supposedly adhere to should make these tools work with any OS or Browser.
If browsers were still $40, then we'd likely have a bunch of good ones to pick from. The power needs to be returned to the people, and removed from the Corporation. imposing a fine on MS only drains their wallet, but doesn't remove the monopoly power that they have. Taking that fine and doing something to counteract the monopoly power, that has the potential to restore the power to the consumers. As it stands now, end users have very little choice when buying a new PC, it comes with windows, and is only supported if it still runs windows. the big question in my mind is "how to disperse the funds?"

if it's determined that a LARGE FINE be imposed rather than a breakup, it's likely to be well more that a billion dollars in my humble estimations. Like any other crime, it can't really be undone, and how do you measure the damage done to the industry and more importantly, the consumer?
I think this money should be diverted to open software to prevent any company from being able to monopolize the software industry going forward. Do we get enough cash so all those developers whove contributed to Linux/GNU so far can quit their day jobs and hack the good hack full time? Or do we push open source into schools training teachers and funding an educational system based on freely available source code? (hey work done at unikversities often becomes their sellable property, work from public schools could go back to the public).... What's the remedy, is it tap 10 Billion dollars from MS and if so, what's to be done with that cash?
for providing devices that allow a regular consumer to go beyond the legal speed limit.
If I buy copyrighted material, and am allowed fair use, why can't I decrypt it so I can use XPDF to view the files on my Linux computer(do we have ebook readers yet?)? and if that would be OK, then why can't someone give me a tool that helps me view my files?
if he was redistributin copyrighted ebooks, that's one thing, but a tool to manipulate information can never be a crime. Publishers should be GRATTEFUL to find out now about this weakness in security before they have invested more in distributing under this format.
* Microsoft removed the Java environment from XP, thereby breaking thousands of Web sites that use Java. XP customers will face endless downloads to replace the functionality they'd come to expect.
and passport to get updates:
* Microsoft will force XP users to sign up for its Passport authentication system if they want to use key XP features. This is a dagger aimed at all kinds of other businesses, and despite Microsoft's claims to the contrary it represents a potentially massive threat to customers' security and privacy.
and MS Signed software
* Microsoft has added ''code-signing'' measures -- verification, supposedly, that downloads will be safe -- that could scare customers away from using software that competes with Microsoft's offerings.
most folks don't have broadband, they have to download for a LONG TIME to get java, furthermore, will they be able to without a passport? How about being able to verify a MS Signed package without a Passport? If I write a great JAVA VM in my spare time (well not me but somebody could) how much would it cost for MS's stamp of good/safe software ? Who controls where IE goes for JAVA? MS does. get a new pc, open website with JAVA in it, Visit Windows Update to have your system registered, passport assigned, and Hardware/software scanned and indexed by the evil empire!!!!!
