To me, this seems like an extension of the Home Audio Recording Act -- to cover digital works. It does not seem (but of course, I have not read the law) to make legal the public domain-style sharing that goes on, ala Napster, Kazaa, etc. Instead, instead, it brings back the old right of, I can record a CD for my friend to listen to, as long as it is not for profit. That was the purpose of the HARA, but it was limited to Analog audio, because they said: "The quality degrades over multiple recordings."
Woot! I will be happy if I can put a mix on a CD instead of a Tape.
Useless information: CD Scratched? Paid 20 bucks for it already? Don't buy another. You didn't pay 20 bucks for a piece of plastic, you paid it for the right to play that music whenever you damn well pleased.
This information has been brought to you by the little guy.
If you use Maxtor hard drives, they are toggled by the presence of one jumper, so if you switch it to left, one becomes master, the other slave, visa versa, is visa versa. Very handy when you have data on both HDs that you need, but dont want to bother with a dual-boot.
Regardless of what they do, unless they are using some sort of weird digital signature on every single song that was part of the previous CD, or somehow filtering the song through a "copyrighted song detector" of some sort, they cannot filter them enough.
Now maybe the.nap encoder asks the CDDB or some Napster database if the music is registered, but there are 2 ways around that, 1) unplug your puter from the net when you encode them (which could be prevented by not allowing encoding unless there is a connection to the net), 2) download a 3rd party encoder (They have probably found by now how to crack it). And then you have to get around the fact that the names themselves are filtered... ROT-13 anyone?:-P Unfortunately they probably have alot of letter-swapping filters on, so many of those wont work, but how about quoting a different lyric on the song?
Yes, I am most likely ignorant on these matters, because I have never used Napster, but its like name filters, people just get more and more ingenious on how to bypass them.
Congrats 99% smokescreen!...
... Unless they are using a digital key requirement along with a variable size requirement, both built into the Nap databases (128bit encoding of X song is from 3.2MB to 3.4MB, and is named Y)and forcing the.nap to have to follow that. In which case its like trying to choke Jello. You get more problems in the first place.
Oh jeez, but sort of good. Now hopefully Nvidia will put the 3dfx guys on the Driver end of their hardware..
The only reason I stayed with the Voodoos is because 1. Everyone supports them, and 2. They came out with decent drivers when they were released. Now that Nvidia seems to be widely supported, hopefully, with the addition of 3dfx, they will make some rockin' cards.
I will have to say, bummer for 3dfx though. The competition ends, now only the Microsoft of Video cards remains.:-P
Yes, you can make very big packets, and flow them downstream pretty fast, but every couple packets has to have an ACK sent back, generally. So yes, you "could" have the capability to download things very fast, if you arent using TCP (I think it uses ACK/SYN religiously)
But most downloading programs will suffer.
Maybe I'm off my rocker, do things like FTP use TCP or UDP to transmit data?
Now introducing, the 101 key solution to all your problems!
Yes, that's right, the KEYBOARD!
With this spiffy tool, you can write messages, edit documents, and even play Quake! *ooohhh*
Specifically customized to give you wrist problems in under 2 years, or your money back!
Dont wait, act now, these things are so durable, you can break your monitor with one, and it will still work! *oooohhh*
------
On another note, there is this neat thing in Quake called "Bind".. Yeah, it allows you programmable keys. Sorry fellas, they have had keyboard macro emulators out for way too long for this to be original.
And plus, 9 just isnt enough; I have about what... well, more than 2/3 of my keyboard bound to various quick-chats, commands of all sorts (Yes, I am a CTF player).
But hey, if ergonomic keyboard toys float your boat, the more power to you.
And that's why, when you are going to be in a Quake tourny soon, you should play alot of Quake right before you goto bed, as well as injest alot of caffiene... The caffiene is there to make sure your playing the game, instead of watching it in your dreams;-)
I have found a purpose for sleep! Sublime Quaking, after all, it is always better in dreams. (At least, that is what she says)
Crypto is a weird subject when it comes to breaking codes and the Law. Break a code, and they make a stronger code -- it used to be.. Now if you break a code, you get sued from here to the moon. Why have a very strong encryption in the first place if your just going to cease/desist everyone who breaks it. (coughDeCSScough)...
I guess because you cant arrest the person who broke it from the Ukraine without a lot of trouble. Bah, if only we could get The Man out of the computer world, then it would be a true match between encryptors and decryptors. Would be amusing to make the Internet a scary place again.
