    :-) You are right, this has nothing to do with history.

    Actually, it has nothing to do with Geography either as oil or minerals are more related to Geology.

    I think reality is, we'll always have a large percentage of people falling into that classification. Some of it is due to the geography. There are certain places in the world that just aren't good to inhabit if you want to earn money and live a good quality of life.

    Canadian endures cold winters and it is a developed country. Texas is quite warn and is part of a developped country. Israel tamed desert.

    In a word, poverty has little to do with location and much more with history.

    Actually, about 2 years ago when I was reading the sci.space.* newsgroups regularly there was a reference to a french satellite that was taking pictures

    I think the name of the satelite is Spot and the company is Spot Image.

    As SF sometimes preceed fact, you will probably be interesting in reading Ben Nova books entitles Moonrise and Moonwar. These two novels are giving a view of a possible impact of nanotechnology on different industries.
