I'm currently using a Samsung 709 Region 2 player; since the region switching using a one4all remote controll is not really comfortable, I decided to get a chip solution from techtronics.com The experience I had with this company was really something new for me:
1) I waited over 5 weeks for them to deliver the product.
2) when I posted a complaint to their webpage after this time I got rather unexpected results:
I didn't get a reply
The complaint never got posted to their website
All access from my providers IP addresses to their website was blocked.
All access to their mailserver with sender address in my domain was blocked. Just try sending an email to webmaster@techtronics.com with any sime.com sender adddress if you want to check it.
OK, so I sent them a query from a different IP range - guess what, THAT IP range is now blocked as well. Unnecessary to state that I didn't get any reply, is it?
currently they seem to block at least:
2 Distinct IP blocks for different ISPs
all email from my domain
all email with my name, regardless of domain
3)While I did finaly get the ordered chip after 6 weeks, my credit card was charged twice. For some harmless fun, go to their website click the "order tracking" link (or klick here and post a comment regarding their policy of just blocking access for complaining customers instead of answering. Just se how long it takes befor your access is blocked as well. Conclusion: Be aware that doing business with this company may lead to serious aggavation and unexpected results !Caveat Emptor!
Sendmail 8.10 Supports SMTP Authentication; it'l interoperate with Outlook Express, Netscape, Eudora etc. To avoid reinventing the wheel, it uses the cyrus SASL Library to supply the authentication funnctions. See ftp://ftp.andrew.cmu.edu/pub/cyrus-mail for the current libraries. To install sendmail with Authentication, look for sasl in the src/README file in the distribution.
Just a hint about older SF Texts: Some texts can be downloaded from project Gutenberg for free. Have a look at http://promo.net/pg/query.html and do a search for Subject: "science fiction".
You'll find some of the Jules Vernes texts, Bradbury's martian chronicles, H.G Wells "The time machine" and others.
Project Gutenberg is a great Idea and well worth looking at.
Just one question about this technology: given that it'll be more difficult& expensive to produce than plain old DVDs who's ever going to be so dumb-assed as to actually BUY one of these.
You'd need some real good mind-controll technique to get ME to buy one, that's for sure.
This time, it seems to be a bug in the uptime client for Windows, not Windows itself:
I've got an NT Server that's been up for ages; Performance Monitor shows 21171900 seconds uptime, which translates to about 245 Days; this should be about right.
The Windows Uptime Client however only shows 46 Days!!
Same issue with Version 3 and 4 of the Windows Clients running on NT 4.0; Uptime of a 2nd system running for just 16 Days is displayed OK.
If this was a Microsoft program for display of Linux uptime, I'm sure everyone would have a perfect explanation for the failure:->
Well, you don't necessarily need patents to play this game; trademarks can be used equaly well.
Example:
In Germany "webspace" was registered as a trademark and now a lawyer (Günther Freiherr von Gravenreuth - a specialist for trademark/copyright cases percieved as shady at best by many people) is suing ISPs all over the country who use the term in their products.
Ok, so you got your iso image - and tomorrow there'll be an update where 3 files in the whole download tree change; What do you do now, download another iso image to stay up to date?
At a guess, using mirror might save some bandwith in this case:-)
Another Idea on how to deal with really offensive posts:
If, say, tree different moderators decide to moderate a post down, they get back the moderation point they used. This way, stamping really obnoxious stuff doesn't cost the moderators any points and can thus be done witout running into the "moderation DoS attack".
You don't actually have to crack CSS to be able to do this. Example: There's a bunch of programs on Windows right now which will let you convert a DVD to a).AVI +.WAV Format files or b).VOB (unencrypted Mpeg 2) by wrapping the decoder.DLLs or by unsing singgle frame capture + single frame advance.

IBM Buying Mylex
·
· Score: 2
The CD was a (bootable) Redhat 5.2 Installation Cd with the Mylex driver included to ease installation on new systems.
Since the driver is now included in Redhat 6.0 (as well as a few other distributions) the cd is no longer required or usefull.
BTW, the driver for the mylex controllers is not yet part of the stanard linux kernel, it can be downloaded as a kernel patch from http://www.dandelion.com/Linux/DAC960.ht ml.
Actually, Britain is by no means the first country to come up with this idea; a very similar proposal was considered last year in germany and is again under consideration now.
The scary thing about it is that it's only a question of implementing existing legislature, namely para. 88 of the telecommunications act. So, the basic laws which require this sort of monitoring are already in place.
Basically, any network provider (ISP, company network, whatever) will have to provide dedicated access to the network at its own cost, in a way that not only enables government to capture any and all data but also leaves the network provider none the wiser.
Cost for the required infrastructure is estimated to be between DM 15.000 for small and DM 100.000 ( US $ 7.500 - 50.000) for large providers (Numbers from german iX magazine, 6/1999). In addition to the complete loss of privacy this offers a perfect infrastructure for hackers..

Yes they definitely do have support for linux; unfortunately (last I know) it was binary-only support.
Use of DOC or IDE Flashdisks is often discussed on the LRP (Linux Router Project) mailing list. have a look at http://www.linuxrouter.org/.
