Belkin is currently selling a 2x3 MIMO+OFDM wireless lan product. It is compatible with 11b and 11g devices. You need another Belkin MIMO-OFDM device to take full advantage of the MIMO-OFDM modes.

Honestly, I don't see a lot of uses for this thing...although it would make a great autonomous packet sniffer. Place it near an interesting target location (i.e. WLAN enabled company, coffehouse, etc.) and let it sniff away. With that 20 Gb hard drive, I bet it could store quite a few interesting tid-bits. Drop by a couple of days later and pick it up...wah lah!

  4. Good book, but not enough detail...not a reference on Writing CGI Applications with Perl · · Score: 2, Informative

I have this book. I found it very useful, but lacking in some ways. The authors advertised this book as not merely presenting code, but the concepts that underlay what is going on. I found this book to be primarily a bunch of recipes...just the opposite of how it was advertised. They present alot of topics and I found the breadth of this book to be very good. I do feel however, that many subjects that were addressed were incomplete. For example, in the chapter on databases, they present the SQL function calls that they need for their example, but don't even provide a list of the interface functions to write a more general application. "How about telling me how to update an existing record?". I bought this book with a little exposure to perl, and less exposure to developing websites. I found that for most topics that they presented, I needed to track down additional documentation to do anything different then what was presented in the book.

I did find the information on mod_perl, HTML::Mason, and RSS to be especially interesting.

If you are looking for an introduction to developing web apps with perl this book presents a large number of technologies, and does a pretty good job. It definitly is not a reference, however.

Something that I found interesting was that during the presidential campaign a news report (I forget the source) mentioned that Ralph Reed was both a political consultant for George W. Bush and a paid lobbyist of the Microsoft corporation.

A few of years back Ralph Reed headed up a little organization called the Christian Coalition. For those of you unfamiliar with this organization, they are an ultra-conservative Christian lobbyist group.

    talk about religously pro-microsoft?

  6. Re:Copper wire? on A Study on Regional DSL and Cable Speeds? · · Score: 2

DSL does not go through the voice filter. It runs at higher frequencies than the voice signal. That is why you can talk on your phone while using DSL. There are filters at the central office and (usually) at the phone box at your residence that separate the frequency bands used by voice and DSL. DSL is essentially limited by distance and distortion in the line. There are VDSL modems that can achieve 52 Mbps. They require the user to be within 1 mile of the central office. Point of interest (at least to me!) Home phone line networking devices use frequencies that are even higher than DSL. Thus, you could potentially run voice, DSL, HPNA over the same twisted pair.
