There has been some Reptile software out for a long time, already. Other than the really cool screensaver, there is the wallpaper maker, both programs by Sausage Software.
What is it, not enough words in the English language, or what?
Ya, but what's the point if the only thing that runs is the OS? I have 8 gig and that's been fine for everything.
I am not going to be a customer for this bloatware.
I was on Usenet just today, used to post in NANUA and news.groups a lot, and was struck with how much things have cleaned up.
A year ago, it was chaos, the UPA guys were just trashing groups right and left, took over NANUA completely, Burnore was running things and flame wars were everywhere.
Now, either some people pushed off or died or something, the UPA seems to have gone somewhere else and there was some semblance of reasonable discourse.
The binaries are the cruncher and most ISPs soon, if not already, are going to have to not propagate this immense bandwidth.
But Usenet death has been constantly predicted since the outset, 1981?, and will probably outlive IRC.
Microsoft could afford to give their OS away and still make a large profit. Per financial reports, Office alone produces 40% of MSFT net profits. Windows has a 25% share but, due to lowered expectations for earnings and a huge bankroll, MS could take the OS loss and still be extremely profitable.
In fact (heresy here but what the hell) Linux would be seriously threatened if Windows became freeware. Due to current MS sensitivity to charges of monopoly, a freeware Windows probably isn't in the cards.
But don't be surprised if, after the court decision has been reversed and MS is pressured by computer makers, MS does decide to give their OS away for a while.

My understanding is that the rest of deja is up for sale too and I wouldn't count on archives any time soon.
Once upon a time we tried to find a stable institution to archive all of usenet back to the beginning but never turned up anything.
What I am afraid of is that the archives will be trashed if deja changes hands. They also never archived a complete archive of usenet 93-95 which was given to them and who knows where that data is.
Staroffice seriously sucks so that's not much of a problem.
No, MSFT doesn't want to be the only realistic office suite left standing right now in the midst of a "monopoly" litigation. And the 135G is pretty small potatos for MS.
Down the line, MSFT can let Corel just slip away or, who knows, Word for Linux?
