The issue is not price, that is merely an advantage. The issue is freedom. The freedom to understand and control the technology that is becoming so pervasive and important in our lives.
His argument was that if everybody routinely used encryption for their communications, the ability of Big brother to monitor communications would be severely weakened. Your post has no relevence to the discussion.

I always wondered why you could not build a spaceship as a large electromagnet and push against the background magnetic field of the solar system. Navigation enabled by changing the orientation of the generated magnetic field. I am not a scientist, so, this is just the idle speculations of an old science fiction freak. Why wouldn't this work?
I agree with you. I enjoyed the mini-series much more than the movie. These guys saying that the movie was so much better have me thinking that two movies were made and I missed the good one. The movie I saw was the worst I had ever seen.
I guess I did not see the same movie you guys did, cause I have never been more disappointed in a movie than I was the Dune movie. Was there more then one movie made? Did I miss the good one?
I have read many comments about it being too hard to replace windows with Linux, how IT departments would balk. I thought I would pass on this little anecdote.
One of the IT managers where I work saw a computer on my desk running Linux(a skunkworks project in the works). His comment:
"Man, I wish management would let us chunk Windows and use Linux. Windows is so hard to manage."
Maybe not representative, but, funny anyway.
The issue is not Linux vs. BSD, it is open vs. closed. I use Linux and look forward to trying the various BSD's when I have time. It is the openness of these systems that attract me. While I may play with OS X, I will never buy a Mac. I will not go back to proprietory systems. Now, if Apple were to open up the proprietory layers....
Think laterally here folks! I would be happy if the morons here showed any sign of intelligent thought period. This is the land of glib remarks, witty sarcasm, etc.
Seeing the significance of having great historical documents like this online is just beyond these idiots.
At one time computer hardware was very expensive and computer software was free. Along came the IBM PC, an open standard for personal computer hardware, and lo and behold, we have inexpensive computer hardware. Then we let one company have control of the software standards and now we have expensive software running on our inexpensive hardware. The same company is the only one making money selling software for this inexpensive hardware, everyone else having to be satisfied with the crumbs.
Now, along comes the internet, based on open standards, running on free software. Lo and behold, innovation once again runs rampart, companies other then the "One" company are making money again. It is a wondrous thing to behold.
The question is, are we going to let the "One" company once again have control of the standards? Should we care about being able to access the internet with something other than Windows?
The answer is that of course we should care. Unfortunately, sheep only care about grazing, and are perfectly willing to graze where ever the grazing appears to be the best, not caring that they are only being fattened up for slaughter.
True, but, most people using the older browsers aren't interested in the latest gee-whiz web enhancements anyway. The far greater problem is getting the browser developers to comply with standards. At least one browser developer(Do I really need to mention who) has a vested interest in maintaining the status quo, i.e., Windows only solutions.
The new Scalable vector Graphics will help as it provides a way to develop interactive web pages, ala Flash, in a standard way. The real answer is for the W3C to define more such standards covering all the current extensions that now require plugins.
He did say why. The DTD spec used in SGML and XML does not allow for data typing and validation. That was one of the reasons for the development of Schema's.
My experience in following/. is that intelligent discussion is the exception, not the rule. Whether you agree with Katz or not, his articles are thought provoking. Which is why people hate him so much, as actual thought really takes effort and evidently is painful to some people here.

Oh shit, another broken record!
Of course, I just realized that most of you youngsters here may not understand the reference to a broken record.:>
Establish a Napster like service owned and run cooperatively by the musicians themselves. They can can decide how to charge, how to divide the money, etc. Cut the middleman out and look out for their own interest.
What is really sad is how easily people buy into the thinking that you are not allowed to take things that you bought and paid for apart to see how they work. Last time I looked, the desire to know how things worked was a part of human nature.
In this instance the rights to the copyright were stolen from the author. The book was a collection of information that the author had compiled and made freely available on the internet. When he had the information published in book form, he did not intend to take down his web site.
Consumers in those countries are forced to use software created in the US because no one in those markets sees any money in producing software for their countrymen. They are forced to use Microsoft software because no one else can make money producing software period. The advantage of one company owning the standards.
Microsoft's mascots are its users. They make such loyal little pets.

Poor IE users cannot access the site, and are not smart enough to know it was a joke. A response to all the IE only sites out there.
If life does not exist anywhere else in the universe now, it will later, because we will take it there.
I got a good laugh out of it.
Fuck you! I am not a nerd. I am a Geek!
Fuckin lowbrows.

I was trying for humourous, but, I guess it was kinda troll like. Sigh, I am becoming like those I criticise.
