It was always my understanding things went like this.
Geeks invent something. Non-Geeks notice geeks using it and steal the idea. Non-geeks make it main stream. Non-Geeks notice geeks using it again. Non-geeks leave it alone.
I'm not really one to comment on the truthfulness of this. but. who can really look at some of the clothing styles and not see geek influance ???
The book is lasting because it makes as much sense now, as it did 40 years ago when it was writen.
The book is lasting because it makes people think, and wonder, when they read it.
But, more importantly.
The book is lasting because it gets noted on slashdot 40 years after its original printing because it was a good book. While most of the books printed now days will only get noted here when they are pulled out of the local land fill, where they deserve to be, 40 years from now and are perfectly preserved.
I think this is a wonderful idea, on a flat rate plan at least. I would pay happily, and more importantly, End Users, will pay happily.
And thats really what this is all about. They aren't trying to get the tech savy; die hard, all things should be open source crowd(us). To pay for the abuility to dl content. Because we have proven, with DeCSS, Gnutella, and orignialy with Napster, that we will find ways around something if we want to. And for the most part, it stays in our circle. (Not to totaly true, but for the most part.) They are trying to get the End Users of the world.
Build this thing, put a few hundred million in marketing behind it (pocket change to a company of this size), and boom. They have a viable workable buisness model that will reach the masses. and they will make money off it.
If you build it, people will come.
