  4. Re:knowing when to quit on RIAA Wants Opt-In Filtering For Napster · · Score: 1

The problem is the napster investors have already invested so much into building napster into a brand-name. Now the problem they face is a fleeting product. They have this invaluable marketting tool, the name "napster", but they are caught trying to redefine what "napster" means in such a way as to be profitable. I agree that they are bungling this whole process, but you see the dilemna they are in. It is not a total loss, because they have built brand-name recognition. But they have no product.

  5. Could Be Good for Consumers on RIAA Wants Opt-In Filtering For Napster · · Score: 1

I agree that this type of system could be abused by the RIAA to prevent independent artists from putting their music on napster. In fact, let me be the first to say, "those bitch-ass motherfuckers." But really, when you get down to it, only about 0.1% of all music is really any good anyways. Through a formal submission process whereby RIAA officials would be forced to listen to all submissions, they would have no choice but to hear the good independent music, and likely discover it that way. Used correctly, this could transform napster from a worthless file-sharing e-commerce ripoff to the principle vehicle whereby independent artists are signed, promoted, and distributed. In addition, if the selection committee prevents bad music from appearing on napster, it will greatly increase the rate at which napster users find good, independent music.

Visual SourceSafe is much more reliable and easier to use than CVS. Plus, you do not have the problem of "CVS Gnomes." CVS Gnomes are little creatures that live inside CVS repositories and mysteriously undo changes to your code, or break previously working code.

I personally have seen CVS Gnomes in my office, but upon attempting to communicate with them, they flee in fear. I do leave little pieces of cheese for them by where the ethernet goes into the wall, though, and I notice that every night they do not fail to eat it.

Has anyone had success communicating with CVS Gnomes? If so, how did you do it? They seem to be afraid of me :(

  9. Been There, Done That on Telemetry Made Simple: Rocket Phone Home · · Score: 4

I regularly participate in amateur rocket competitions. For telemetry I find it quite simple to attach a Nokia 5100 (with detached Honey Orange faceplate) and wire it to a microprocessor that will send varying volumes in different audible frequency bands to indicate different values, scaled into audible ranges. For example, altitude, airspeed, latitude and longitude (as calculated by GPS and communicated to the uP). I simply record on DAT tape the audio on another cell phone. When I return home I play the audio into my computer as a WAV file, and then run spectrum analysis on it and scale and filter frequency analysis into raw telemetry data that I can then plot. (This is easily done with Matlab).

If instead of pumping millions of dollars into this ridiculous, trivial genetic "engineering", imagine what could be done by putting the money into researching powerful, reliable mechanical replacements for imperfect biological organs.

Imagine a steel heart. It would not have to worry about being rejected by the body. "Oh no, I am being attacked by T-Cells!!" the strong, reliable, mechanized heart would say as it steadily and rapidly pumped an abundant supply of oxygen-rich blood to the entire body for the next 400 years.

  14. LAN "Parties" Encourage Piracy; Degrade Moral Valu on Get a Grip on LAN Parties · · Score: 2
One thing about LAN "parties" that should be noted is the rampant piracy that occurs at them. If two people have a copy of a game that they want to play, what do you think happens? Yes, everyone is given a copy of the game. And this behavior propagates throughout multiple lan parties. In this way one legitimate copy of a game can turn into 10,000. This is why Tribes is the number one most pirated game in the world.

In addition, the atmosphere of LAN parties is not conducive to proper behavior. Drinking and smoking are not uncommon at LAN parties. In addition, the lack of female gamers leads encourages homosexuality. This sort of behavior may have been tolerable in the Greek armies of long ago, but is simply unacceptable in modern moral society.

As such, I forbid my children to attend LAN parties because I do not their school to become the next Columbine.

Let's face it, the Indrema console would never survive in today's marketplace. Look at the Dreamcast. Sega is an established, respected video-game company with a long history and a lot of marketing power, yet look how long the Dreamcast lasted in the marketplace.

Much of a console's marketing power is dependenant on the games that are expected to be available for it. What Indrema game can't you wait to play? I certainly haven't heard of any that have piqued my interest.. in fact I haven't heard of any, period.

Don't get me wrong, I think the Indrema is a noble effort and I respect everyone involved in the project and the company. That is why perhaps it might actually be best if this company were to die now before the people involved wasted more of their money and lives on a product and an idea that will never last more than a month in the highly competitive marketplace. Let's face it, the Indrema is basically X-Box minus Microsoft's marketing machine. And the X-Box is basically a PC.

  18. This is good news. on Salon Sans Ads, For A Price · · Score: 1
This means that the Internet is entering a new, profitable phase. It has long since been recognized that banner ads do not generate revenue, not for the site hosting the ads nor the company paying to place them. They are a waste of everyone's time, money, and bandwidth.

If premium, quality sites such as Salon and Stileproject began charging subscription rates instead of relying on ineffective, sleazy banner-ad technology, both quality and quantity of content would improve. At the same time, there would be increased competition for the consumers dollar, because they are not going to view all sites, they will pick only one site and pay for it. No longer will shitty HTML programming or empty content be acceptable. In addition, this kind of thing may mean the end of "pages" of articles, where the text is spread out over several pages for the sole purpose of increasing banner ads without increasing relative density.

I for one will be happy to pay $30 to Salon for continued quality content of insightful, well-researched articles minus banner ads and to Slashdot for troll-less message forums.

  20. Moderation Necessary for Healthy Exchange on Is The Net Revolution Breaking Faith? · · Score: 3
Without moderation, it would not be possible to have a sensible exchange of ideas on the internet. As the number of people online grows and the number of places on the internet to exchange ideas shrinks, conversation will become more and more convoluted until there is nothing left but noise.

What can we do? The best thing to do IMHO is to apply a sort of "darwinistic" moderation system. Comments and ideas that are inherently inferior are filtered from view. For example, on slashdot, if one idea is bad, it can be moderated so low that most people cannot see it. Then, any replies (i.e., descendants) of that message are also rendered invisible.

This sort of system makes it easier to concentrate on the more important (or better), and thus, more highly moderated comments. Slashdot has created a system that is IMHO ahead of its time. I think we will see and more and more of this kind of darwinistic content control over the internet as the signal to noise ratio rises, and I think that it will lead to a better exchange of ideas, and in the end, everyone will benefit. Censorship will not be necessary because the system will inherently censor unwanted material. Thus inappropriate material will not be visible to thus who should not be viewing it. Since moderation is established by community standards, this actually fits the legal definition of obscenity, so any negatively moderated ideas are automatically, legally, obscene. This frees the admins of such a medium from legal obligation to monitor content.

Thus, it is clear that such a sytem is both necessary and beneficial, rather than restrictive. Given the current environment of net culture, with its pervasise goatsecx links and rampant flamage and trollage, such a system will unquestionably do more good than harm.

I know I don't want my children to grow up to become killers or rapists!!
