  1. From a Technology Teacher on Computer Textbooks For High Schoolers? · · Score: 1

I've been teaching on Long Island in NY for 11 years, for the past 4 years I've used books from GoodHeart-Wilcox for my Computer Information Technology Course (PC Repair and troubleshooting). The only other books I use are Cisco Press for the Cisco Networking Academy Certifications and SDC Publications for our AutoCAD classes.

The book below does a good job of breaking down key concepts, identifying important terms, and exposes students to sample A+ Certification questions. It is not a perfect A+ Prep book, but a good start and has worked out great in my classes.
    Hope this helps.

  3. Dell should talk to Cisco on Dell Moves Call Center Back to US · · Score: 1

I don't really get upset by the accents, but the scripted and limited knowledge of some call centers is frustrating. US call centers aren't perfect either, they need more intelligent people on the lines and need to answer them quickly.
Cisco is a good example. You call in, speak with a "tech" all he does is take your name, info and number, they ask you what the priority is, and have an engineer call you back in 10, 15, 20 or 30 minutes. Depending on the severity of your complaint. I've had to use their tech support 3 times and every time it was a pleasure. Menial technical issues were called back in 10 to 15 minutes, even though they said it would be about 20 - 30 minutes. The engineer had an accent, but who cares? I got my problem solved in a very pleasant manner by an intelligent person in a timely manner.

Dell should talk to Cisco :-)

  4. Gaming is part of the Curriculum on Games in High School? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I teach computer technology in a HS. The students work hard to learn all about computer hardware, software, OSes, and networking equipment. Before each vacation an dthe last week of the year we "TEST THE NETWORK" with Quake, Quake II and Unreal Tournament.

I would really like to get an afterschool program going, the kids love it and it keeps them out of trouble.

Not to mention the incentive it creates to fix network or hardware problems, when they occur the day before "testing".

It helps some of the kids who never socialize to feel more in their element. As long as parents and community members realize it is just a game and it is all in fun, there should be no issues..
