It's a lot cheaper than a Gamecube, Wii, PS2, or PS3 dev kit. This is a major step forward. Indie developers can use it, even if it is $100 (which, let's face it, is not much money...two games worth) and if they create something worthwhile they can pay more to get it full licenced for release.
Starting to mimic other economic systems

Seems to me the Internet is starting to mimic other economic systems, such that it is now subject to the whole boom and bust cycle. Just that they call it a bubble. There will be many of them in the years to come.
I am a student in Electrical Engineering about to graduate. Now, I managed to pay for part of my education through scholarships, but the rest I had to borrow on credit cards and other lines of credit. My credit rating is not as good as I'd like it to be (terrible?) and I can't imagine having to fork over those records. Hopefully if I am required to get a credit check, my potential employer would have the insight to see that students might have absolutely terrible credit, and it is not due to money mismanagement. When you have to shell out 5 times what you make in a year to pay for something that you HOPE will help you in the future, if it was anything other than education, people would call you stupid. My younger brother on the other hand dropped out of grade 9 and is working at Wendy's and he has great credit, almost perfect. They just let him buy a $45000 truck (Canada). Me on the other hand, probably couldn't lease a second-hand pinto.
If I was a terrorist I would have already changed my name to something that isn't on that list. Or couldn't possibly. Something like Jeb Bush, or George Bush. But then I'm sure there is a note on that list that says: "If said terror-suspect has american name and LOOKS like a terrorist, hold him/her anyway"
I can't believe how out of hand the United States has gotten with this terrorist thing. Matching names is by far the worst system they could have come up with by itself. At least add birthdays, but seriously, how difficult is it to get fake IDs? I'm sure if you're a terrorist it's pretty easy.
I do believe this will completely change the parking scene in Vancouver. Anyone who has been downtown and tried to park there knows it is impossible. This means that now, for sure, anyone who gets there first will be there all day. Previously spaces opened up due to people running out of change and leaving or people getting towed. This would also be a good method of topping up at the various Impark parking lots in Calgary and Edmonton. I almost always underestimate the time I need, I think everyone does.
Of course, Impark won't do this since it makes more money giving tickets than selling parking space. They are vultures! The ticket is already written up by the time you have 1-minute left, just in case.
The article explains this is the first major city in North America to do this. Not to mention this is in CANADA. I think you have Canada confused with the United States with your comment.
This is exactly what everyone is looking for. People defrag their hard drives in the hopes to increase performance. There is no reason why storage that is accessed more shouldn't be on the high performance drives. Or at least some sort of class rating that defines what storage may need high performance. For example, automatically installing and saving 3D Max to a RAID 0 media, and saving word documents to the lesser-performing drives.
I try to follow this idea all the time with my system. Fast stuff goes on RAID 0, slow stuff, and backup stuff goes on the ole' 200 GB backup drive.
I agree. Even though Linus isn't doing a whole lot, he still maintains power and control over the kernel. Seeing how distros like Mandrake/Mandriva pile thousands of useless packages into their DVDs to make it more user friendly, the kernel may have exploded and become bloated and perhaps very buggy. He adds support for technologies in a slower but still effective manner. Some distros are trying to mimic Window's user experience by bundling way too much stuff, and if it was a loosely controlled kernel development team doing the changes, I believe linux would be in a lot worse state. I use linux and windows as they both have their place.
The reason why he does matter is because he is the main reason why the internet is as stable (maybe not) as it is. Many servers run linux and it is because of him sites stay up. Although I've used IIS6 and it's stability is commendable, linux and apache still take the cake.
