We have been working with prototypes of these kinds fo things for a few months.. they really are quite neat..
One thing that is nice is that they use a LOT less power than conventional LCD's. Also, there is no ghost when animation occurs like in conventional LCD displays.. Even in high quality laptop and flatpannel displays you get teh ghost effect, it makes quake3 almost unplayable.
This stuff is really cheep to build too... Once R&D is finished, cost of manufacturing will be almost as trivial as copying mp3's on napster. No more paying $900 for a new laptop display when it breaks.
Overall, this is very great technology. I cant wait for my Crusoe 1ghz with this display and wireless ethernet to come out:)
We have encrypted webmail at our university using SSL. As far as yahoo and AIM go, screw them. Yahoo is cool, but there are a few people on freshmeat that are working on encrypted instant messaging.
the people at suidNET have already put together a really nice encrypted irc network. (connect with/server irc.obey.org ) This should keep your admins from packet sniffing your private conversations.
As far as email goes, Don't use your company's email server if you don't want your boss reading the mail. He has access to it all. Use a secure mail server. I believe hotmail has a ssl checkbox you can use.
For those of you who think encryption isn't the solution to all evil. You're RIGHT ON! Of course there are problems with everything. Security holes for everything. That's why we moderate DOWN all informative posts having to do with security via obscurity! Because obscurity is lame, and linux r00lz! (?)
Either way the linux community, and partialy the open source zealots think that just because someone didn't tell them everything relevant about a program they are using that it is obscure. Thats the beauty of opensource, If you care about its security/useability/features, you can change it all the fuck you want! If you care and don't bother to find out on your own, then you are a zealous hypocrite and blong to the slashdot zealot bag that santa drops off his roof top every year on the 25th.
Serriously though, Why would you brint them back? I'm not all against the 'playing god' thing, but there are really some concerns here. Why would you want to bring back an extinct species? Maybe it was extinct because nature said so?
The only thing this is usefull for is to make money. Clone extinct things, peopel pay money to see it. People pay money to fund you. People pay money and think they are doing good. In reality, this cloning is just hurting life's process. The stronger species survives.
Do you really think the Asian Guar is going to give US a second chance when we are extinct? I serriously doubt they are gonna go out of their way to bring us back from the dead. Afterall, we are the ones who are destroying this planet in the first place...
This reminds me, wouldn't it be easier to just clone those whales Capt. Kirk needed rather than fly around the sun a million times fast and go back in time? Makes one think....
Why does the Slashdot community think this is obscurity? Just because someone doesnt disclose their security bugs doesnt mean jack. Everyone here can still look at the source. If you want to see security holes, go look at them for yourself.
These people are just trying to keep a secure system. You cannot do that very well by just telling all the script kiddies how to exploit your own product. ESPECIALLY when the other venders do not have a patch to fix the hole.
I personally commend them for waiting 45 days. There is no need for immediate anything. All this will do is add more script kiddies, more downtime, and LESS security. Youall seem to want the greatest security possible. Well I can tell you that if you leave yoru front door open, its not gonna do you jack shit.
Who do these peope think they are? I live in malaysia. This is getting out of hand.. They have already sent notices to the arcade's they must be shut down in a month or so.. Since when do kids STEAL from their parents to go to the arcade? I always took money from teh santa clause standing in front of the shopping center. It's not like arcade's are a great economic distress in this country. I mean give me a break!
Isn't it nice to know you can pour hot grits down my pants and not go to jail over it? Shoot, I dont even care if you do it in an arcade! There is this cool game there called Slashdot's Arcade Funhouse featuring me as Natalie Portman.. In the game I go and get petrified and you have to rescue me. It's quite fun:)
