Anything that reduces the popluation of California is a good thing. Ask any long time resident.

  11. Pay for Radio? on Satellite Radio - XM vs. Sirius? · · Score: 0

Moderate me down for this if you will for being offtopic, but I want to thank you for presenting me with an opportunity to rant regarding satellite radio. Why would anyone want to *pay* for the reception of a radio signal? Look at the content they are delivering. Neither of the two providers are feeding you programming which is free of the greedmongering spam you now are spoon fed from the commercial AM and FM stations. Paying for this dubious priveledge is against my religion and I for one, refuse to buy in. Now of course, if I were a truck driver and wanted to listen to NPR in Sagebrush Texas, things might be different. But I live in Los Angeles, the radio market is saturated with strong signal already. Besides that, who needs a radio that can receive Metallica in digital clarity? I'm boycotting them already. Say, do they have a Brittney Spears channel on those things? I gotta go.

  12. Re:Now how do I do this and stay in business? on RMS: Putting an End to Word Attachments · · Score: 1

I agree with you completely. When you provide services to a client, a huge part of providing good service is to make doing business with you, the service provider convenient to the client. That means that you take the information your client gives you, and accept it with a smile and a good attitude in the format in which he presents it. It's your job to convert it, if you need to, into a format that is convenient to you. I don't like it, but I do it because it is just another one of those costs of doing business. I may not like my clients document format, but I sure like his money.

  15. Re:Inform them of the tradeoffs, and then get your on How Do Companies Pay for "On-Call" Support? · · Score: 3

Here, here. I work for a similar healthcare outfit which does not compensate at all for on-call pager duty after hours. The management seems to think we do on-call because we like it. We don't like it. Many engineers in my group have taken their talents elsewhere and cited 7 days of on-call in a highly stressful environment every four to six months without compensation as an important factor in their decision to leave the company. Unfortunately, management seems to be indifferent to the situation in spite of the high cost of replacing these skilled and knowledgeable individuals. The truth is, pointy haired managers simply do not have a grasp of the issues regarding remedial maintenance support. Their expectation is based on uptime percentages devoid of the human cost to acheive those numbers. This is a losing battle on the technical end. The pointy hairs seem to clearly grasp the concept of time in the opposing direction however. When negotiating on-call compensation, suggest time off on a 1:1 ratio for on-call time on and see how fast they recognize the value of worktime.

Okay, so SA wanted to make a few bucks to defray expenses. No fault there. But, now that lowtax got burned because he didn't read the fine print, he wants *you* to share the financial burden of recovering his losses by "contributing" to his server fund. I wonder if lowtax intended to share the profits over and above his expenses with the same people from whom he now solicits contributions. Lowtax should be placed on his own SA list for this one.
