XEmacs IS speedier to use and much more versitile than any IDE (and yes, i use vi too when the mood takes me ) - but if you are thinking of breaking free of VB, I would recommend either Java or Perl, instead of C, depending on your needs, talent, personality type etc. If you were going to be a C programmer, I think you'd be one already, and would have buried VB long before now. Whichever language you chose, the point is to master the language first 'from the ground up' WITHOUT an IDE. When you're confident enough then you can take shortcuts!

What worked for me: 1/Take up yoga and practice every day. I tried swimming, but it's a hassle getting to the pool every day. Yoga you can do in the office with no special equipment. It strenthens the back and gradually improves your posture. 2/Try to keep regular hours (bed before dawn, up before midday works for me...). As a rule, don't eat anything served in a polystyrene container by underpaid teenagers. Use a bicycle to commute, not the car. The car should be kept for weekend pleasure trips to the country with beautiful actresses, and not wasted on the mundanity of gridlocked traffic. 3/If you are a compulsive computer user, you can help your posture a lot by simply learning to sit in the lotus position, or something similar, while you work. This stops you from developing a sloppy posture, keeps you alert, and (in my case at any rate) forces you to stand up and walk around once an hour until the sensation returns to your legs. Seriously though, either lower your computer onto the floor and sit on a cushion infront of it, or raise yourself up to computer's level and sit cross-legged infront of it on the table (This is what I do, but obviously you absurdly fat americans will probably prefer the first option).

you poor, benighted gringo 'libertarians'make me laugh - you really do. how you have the gall to use the term 'fascist' to deride anyone who disagrees with you ill-conceived, ill-informed opinions is beyond me... the more i see of america, the more i love europe(my home). life is better in europe, full stop. and unlike you we have a political system which intelligent people can participate in with a clear conscience. well, i apologise for the rant, but i just feel sorry for you poor yanks. USA - land of 'creationism'/'libertarianism'/state executions of retards & minors/dropping high-tech bombs on low-tech third-worlders ("don't worry, they're all wops/muslims/luddites")/a political system which is the laughing stock of the civilized world/an infant mortality rate higher than cuba's etc. etc. viva fidel! adios.
