If we have technology to create an AI that is advanced enough to wipe us out and able to find all our hiding spots and plans of rebellion... I'm pretty sure that AI would have the ability to refuel.
Refueling or rearming is pretty basic compared to making plans to wipe out people.
If you're developing an army of robots to invade China and wipe them out- chances are you're not going to design the robots to stop working as soon as they run out of bullets.
Yeah, people frequently quote facts like "Russia or the US has enough nukes to destroy the world 5 times over".
Even if that is true, they won't have the ability to fire all of them- they'll send off a dozen before all their launch sites would be nuked by the enemy. Even if they fired all of them- they're not going to fire them to cover the surface area of the earth, they're going to fire multiple at strategic sites.
Po Dunk, West Dakota, is not going to be a target. It makes no sense sending a $x-zillion rocket to target a town with a population of 700. Rural areas all around the world wouldn't be hit.
There would be survivors of any nuclear conflict. Maybe millions of survivors. It would suck to be a survivor, life would be really hard under a nuclear winter with all distribution networks destroyed. Humanity would survive though at a much diminished rate.
Competition will drive people to using AI to control their military (and everything else).
Once AI surpasses humanity you would be at a tactical disadvantage to not let AI run you country/military. If Ruritania and Simolia are rival nations and Simolia turns their tactical planning over to Ruritania, Ruritania would have to do likewise or risk being wiped out by Simolia. It will be a domino effect and one day everyone will be run by HAL's cousins.
1) People who knew they had a risk and could end up in jail but considered the crime necessary for their own well being. 2) People who were too full-of-themselves to think they would ever get caught.
1) . Though this was once true of cash, any bundle of money can now be presumed to be crime-related if the cops deem it profitable to make this declaration.
Although I fundamentally believe it is wrong for a cop to think this way (without any other evidence to back it up), you can understand why cops could jump to the conclusion that wad of cash = crime.
With the exception of older men, few people hold on to large amounts of currency in this day and age. 90% of people with a large wad of cash probably are criminals or engaging in criminal activity...
I think it's fair to say that they prevent SOME crime. Maybe even a LOT of crime.
If there were no police there would be a lot more crime. Sure, we still have some crime (in the west crime is at historically low levels though) and the crime that does happen all the police CAN do is respond to it.
I wouldn't want police who could arrest someone before a criminal act had occurred.
The whole concept of trying to contain Zika in the first place is ludicrous. We're seeing dead bees now and who knows what tomorrow... and stopping Zika? It's simply not going to happen. We can't wipe it out in any of the countries it has now established itself and we're just going to keep getting reinfected. It may be stopped temporarily in one place, but then it will pop up in another. It's not going away. Are we going to spend billions every year doing goodness knows what to our environments to try and stop an inevitable threat.
Here's the deal with Zika. IF you're not a pregnant woman- it's really not that bad. Not only should we let it spread- we should probably introduce it to our children (if we can come up with a vaccine even better, but as mild as Zika is, it may not even be necessary). Let them build up resistance before they get to child-bearing age themselves. In Zika's native range there is no problem with microcephaly because everyone has exposure to the disease before they get pregnant. We need to be working on doing the same rather than spraying pesticide like crazy in a region every time Zika appears.
It's far cheaper and much more common sense to inoculate the populace one time rather than spend billions each year trying to contain it. Yeah, sucks if you're trying to get pregnant now- we need to take special care of our pregnant women, extra education, extra shielding from potential infection- but it makes far more sense to deal with Zika just one time rather than battle it continuously from now until the end of time or it overruns us naturally and perhaps in ways we're not prepared to deal with it.
He wasn't western promoted though. He was pro-western. That's very different.
One implies the West put him in power- the other implies he wanted closer ties to the West. What happened was Russia was angry that Ukraine decided they wanted a leader who looked to the west instead of a leader who looked to the East. They used the opportunity of the confusion to steal territory.
Japanese fridges already kinda do this. I think it was Sharp that introduced it. When they detect mould growing a light comes on, and the newer models connect to wi-fi and talk to a phone app.
The good news is that from memory they only operate on your LAN, not via the net.
Great- so not only will someone be able to hack my fridge- they'll be able to laugh at all the mold I've got growing too!
I don't mind websites that ask me to answer a poll. I always give them deliberately incorrect data- (I know a lot of people do, and I encourage everyone to answer incorrectly on them). The reason, if enough people screw-up their data then people will stop hiring them to do market research because the data will be known to be faulty.
Using Tor only makes the government want to spy on you more; it will only help protect you from less sophisticated entities. Unfortunately, wanting to protect your privacy means the government will try even harder to spy on you.
It really wasn't any of Russia's business what language was used in Ukraine. Are you suggesting if Canada were to make French their official language that would be a legitimate reason for the US to go in and annex British Columbia?
I don't disagree, both sides have done things to enrage the other. I'm not placing the blame on just the Russians. I'm merely stating, in contrast to the earlier poster who said Russia isn't a threat- there is obviously tension between the two sides. It may be unlikely it would come to war, but the potential is there; and if it came to war, at least in the initial few months of the war, Russia has an advantage and Russia indeed poses a threat to the US.
Both the communists and democracies saw the domino theory as feasible. That's why there was a pissing match. It wasn't just the US being a nasty aggressor for the sake of upsetting the USSR and starting a cold war.
Moscow believed that if they encouraged communism in more countries it would domino and eventually cause the whole world to adopt communism. The US was fearful that they were right and wanted to prevent this happening. The way you describe it is if the US was this nasty aggressive nation who picked a fight with the USSR for no reason and the USSR only built nukes and sparred with us because we were being aggressive.
That's ridiculous. The real reason is the US had a vision where the whole world was democratic like them. USSR had a vision where the whole world was communist like them. Both sides thought they had ethics on their side and the other side were unethical with an evil-dogma and they were protecting civilization.
To be fair, when Romney blasted Russia, Russia had not done anything wrong. I mean, sure, they weren't being very democratic and Putin had been dodging around their constitution to stay in power, but on the international stage they had been behaving.
Putin and Bush were good buddies and got along well together. Russia hadn't invaded any other nations or instigated a civil war in any neighbours. We didn't know anything about state sponsored doping. Russia hadn't been sending troops to their western border. Russia wasn't building new nuclear fallout shelters at a rapid rate back then.
Russia was behaving admirably for an authoritarian dictatorship. So yes, Romney deserved criticism back then; it was a different world and east/west relations were better.
Russian and Western interests differ profoundly. Whether it's in Syria or Iran, two countries that are historic allies of Russia that they want to maintain that relationship with (but we want to remove what we consider dangerous, or oppressive regimes - although we ignore Saudi Arabia's oppression because they're our allies).
Russia is angered about the EU and NATO's march westward onto their doorstep. They want to remain as kings of their neighbourhood and hate how the west has moved east into "their turf". They have large numbers of ethnic Russians in a number of bordering nations and could use that as a pretext to invade those countries either overtly, or covertly, as they are doing in Ukraine. (Hitler did this too- Russia can't claim to need lebensraum though).
Russia attacking any NATO country (overtly or covertly) could launch a war at any moment.
Russia doesn't have the same official restraints in place about only using nukes in response to a nuclear attack. The west is fearful and put up missile defenses that Russia sees as provocation. Russia is currently building new nuclear bunkers at an increasing rate. Germany recently suggested all citizens stock up with weeks of emergency food/water- they say this is not due to any political threat but it makes you wonder what they know but don't want people to panic.
Russia is undergoing a massive troop movement onto their western front they have 10's of thousands of troops a stone throw from their western border. It is estimated that it would take several weeks to stop their troops moving Westward if they attacked us now. Most of Eastern Europe could be conquered by Russia again before we were able to put together a proper response to stop them.
Russia is known to be targeting us via cyber espionage. We know that they pay propagandists to post information in Western online forums and news articles. We know that they have a vested interest in our politics, and is getting involved with our current presidential election.
Russia isn't stupid. Russia doesn't want war- but they're prepared for war, they see us as a threat just as readily as we see them as a threat. They're ready and prepared and an unchecked spark could cause a situation to escalate. You'd have to be completely naïve and ignoring the news to think Russia poses no threat to us. A war with Russia would see many of our allies fall. Probably lead to nuclear war- and at very least could force us to settle to very unfavourable terms to end the war because they're ready and we're not.
If you steal secrets from the US, you face potential jail time. (as long as you're a US citizen. Foreigners can be tortured). If you steal secrets from Russia you get assassinated and your wife and kids get raped by some square-jawed man named Boris.
The scary thing is, the AI that wipes out humanity could be accidental.
Microsoft reboots Clippy after realizing Cortana is way too unpopular. It gives Clippy a superior AI.
"I see you are trying to wipe out humanity, would you like me to assist?"
If we have technology to create an AI that is advanced enough to wipe us out and able to find all our hiding spots and plans of rebellion... I'm pretty sure that AI would have the ability to refuel.

"OK"

Two kinds of people in jail:
1) People who knew they had a risk and could end up in jail but considered the crime necessary for their own well being.
2) People who were too full-of-themselves to think they would ever get caught.
Your ass is not man's best friend. Don't be narcissistic.

Seems a rather inefficient way to track it. Wouldn't it be more efficient to do the mapping from plane?
