Originating from Northern Britain (or Norvern Britain rather) there are a few things I say that my American wife finds amusing.

"Aw" and "Or" are the same sound (US "or")- so she finds it amusing when I say things like Pawn Shop.

The "a" sound at the end of the word comes out as "er". She thinks "Chimichonger" is an amusing name for a Mexican dish.

I did adapt and started to reluctantly pronounce my "th" sounds when speaking because all the Americans I knew thought I had a lisp.

The things about the American accent that amuse me is how "Mary, Merry, and Marry" are (to most American speakers, not all) pronounced identically- and the same with Berry and Barry both being pronounced "Berry". "Berry" to me sounds rather unmasculine. I'm glad my name isn't Barry- I would have thought people were calling me a fruit.

And the British pirated on Spain

Piracy or Warfare? It was technically only piracy during peace-time. When privateers were sailing with a mandate from the king (to attack the merchant or war vessels of specific nations) it was a form of economic warfare.

Certainly it wasn't just the British either- this was a "legitimate" form of warfare across all of Europe. The French on the British and Spanish- the British on the Spanish and the French. The Spanish on the Dutch.

The stereotypical pirate during peacetime though were not operating on the goverment and had nothing to do with nationbuilding (certainly not with democracy building)- that was about individuals seeking private gain.

Continental Europe saw Britain as a nation of corse nation of pirates and brigands during the 17th and early 18th century because Britain was more successfull at this form of warfare in comparison to the economic footprint of Britain at the time.

The smart phone (and indeed the less smart flip phone) killed the palm pilot.

I stopped carrying my palm pilot when I got a flip phone that had a calculator and I could store telephone numbers and addresses in. Didn't do everything the palm-pilot did- but it made my pockets bulky to carry both.

Palm did make phones for a while though too.

I guess a lot of the technology was used in building up to the smart phone- but I think the idea of a seperate PDA is dead- the phone swallowed the palm pilot.

That said- it is debateable and I can definately see your point. Palm pilots did fade dramatically after a year or so... before the smart phone took off.

Now- if they determine that fracking can and does cause more powerfull quakes it would be of concern... so far there is no link.

I wouldn't "frack" near a nuclear power plant or house toxic chemical plants near fracking rigs JUST IN CASE... but... most likely fracking quakes are absolutely nothing to worry about.

Absolutely- and I wish people would realise this.

It appears mostly cleaner than other forms of energy retrieval- certainly much cleaner than coal and less environmental damage than moving mountain tops around.

It is something that needs to be monitored- and from what I understand the use of toxic chemicals is not required- there are non-toxic equivalents that may cost a little more... USE THEM.

Regulate the industry- don't just kill it outright.

I'm also curious specifically on the drinking water pollution- something we should watch. Some people have detected elevated levels of methane in their water around fracking sites. I'm curious how much of this is really from fracking and how much is due to the fact that they only frack in places where there is methane in the ground anyway.

Sure you're going to find more methane in areas around fracking sites than elsewhere... that's why they are fracking there in the first place.

Please proceed with fracking- but have independent review and make sure shotcuts arn't taken. Make sure we watch all the time and take every precaution not to make a "deepwater" mistake. This is potentially a great way to get "relatively" clean power.

My very first statement was that it is not a fad- because I do see them as being ever-important as time goes by.

However, I standby that the buying pattern of them is "fadish."

Why? Whereas I acknowledge they may fill a void unfilled before them for some people- the vast majority of people buying tablets would be better off with an alternate device.

The media is driving the desire to buy them. They are cool... I want one... just don't need one- and am not driven by the impulse to buy one just because they are cool.

I am not bashing tablets- I am not predicting them to be short lived as the Palm Pilot as an example.

However the drive to buy is more driven by peer pressure, media excitement and marketing than it is that they will improve anyone's life that a more establish technology such as notebooks/netbooks, etc can't.

For most people they don't serve an unfullfilled need other than looking cool. That's what makes the current buying pattern fadish- even if they do have a long future.

    I'm not sure I agree.

You can stick a DVD or a Bluray in a netbook as well as stream video.

For browsing the web- how often do you not need to type something into google- a keyboard is the best way to do that (for most people).

If you often find your self wanting to stand up and use a device- sure an tablet would be better- there are other scenarios a tablet is better too- but I think for most people a netbook, whereas less cool, is more functional.

Like tablets though- there is a wide variety of how good the tablet is- some are crappier than others- and some are pricier than others. Some are pricey and crappy.

  19. It's for filling the fad for the less wealthy on Reviews of Kindle Fire Are a Mixed Bag · · Score: 5, Insightful

It's the cool thing to have- especially for anyone wanting to look yuppyish and in the in-crowd. Not saying they don't have function for many people (although most people would still be more practically served by a netbook).

So someone needs to fill the niche for the majority of people for whom Apple and other quality tablets are just too expensive.

So regardless of whether kindle fire is any good- it will sell because there is a need for less wealthy people to feel "with it".
